You're welcome (no, i'm not trying to be a smart aleck, so don't take 'ur welcome' the wrong way), ya, i think people are so naive that thy actually think nvidia is 'the way it's meant to be played' cause of the intro to BF2. Also, people just thought that ATI sucked after the 7 series from nvidia came out, even though that's not true, the X1900series from ati is making a nice comeback.

Just read an article that decribes how some guy for BFG tested how the RAM of 1 - 2 can increase framerate by about 30- 50 % and recomends it, ill stick with that for time being, thanx a lot.

The X800/X850 series cards are **** and im not risking buying another ATI while Nvidia cards are fine.

I run an X800XT PE, and it runs just great.

I give any manufactuer the benefit of the doubt. But my Geforce 4 TI 4800 took everything i threw at it and tried its best to always work. It got old and needed to be replaced with something newer but it was a hell of a card.

My x800 is a peice. My friends X850XT PE is a peice, and almost anyone with a X800 that i know or have worked on thier PC, has major graphical issues.

The friend with the XT PE used to use a 9800 Pro, and for what its worth, that card worked flawlessly.

ATI needs to invest in better stock coolers for all these next gen cards.

back in the days of the geforce Ti, all you could "throw at it" was counter strike and half life. You cant really compare a x800 to a Ti. I mean, it might be true that your x800 sucks, but thats not ATis fault. IMO

Im not comparing the processing ablities of the two cards, simply their reliability.

Ive seen too many ATI's fail for random reasons (typically heat though). While almost all Nvidias i see work fine for many many years.

Samd with AMD/Intel. AMD makes fantastic chips but they have "odd" issues that put them 1 step lower than an intel in my book.

Thanks for all the feedback, I appreciate it all. I'm still considering if I could get more money towards this, say if I were to go to 430 $, would I be able to get a better value ?

I wouldnt argue AMDs bang for the buck. They do make a good chip.


There are oddities with the AMDs i find, such as stability issues, weird resets, weird incompatabilities. Some of these issues probably are inherent to the chipsets as well, but the general AMD family (CPUs/chipsets)

Back to the original posters question...now that he posted some specs...also this applies to Player_spy as well.

Both of you should NOT buy a video card in excess of a 7800gt or x1800xl...until new DX10 cards come out.

Buying any card greater than those would not yeild their full potential due to your CPU's...unless you choose to play at 1600x1200.
In which case I think ANY card will be OK with your CPU's, both of you.

player_spy desperately needs at least an additonal 512 ram, but if possible just buy 2x1024 and sell that 512 you have. There are deals at Fry's for 2x1024 for under $160.

With that said, my best reco would be to buy an nVidia 6800gs or wait a few weeks for the new 7800gs or whatever ATI has up its sleeve...and sell it when the new DX10 cards come out for the final card you can put in your system before needing a new CPU.

HIS RADEON X800-GTO 256meg PCI Express Platinum Pack - ICE-QII - TURBO R480 0.13 process

was the best one I could find within that price range on the site you listed. 280$ wth a Artic Silencer and great performance. I also think there is a way to unlock some pipelines and OC it to a x850 performance. The 6800gs I would have chosen but it was about 340$.

Just got this card a few days ago, except it wasn't turbo. Runs BF2 all high settings on 1024x768 for me at around 40-50fps. Temps idle at 39C and peak at 55C for me. The fan on the IceQ II is very quiet btw.
