if you are hiding in a alleyway/building with a shadow cast over it you look invisible but when u play all low its just a plain background no shadow and a player is easy to spot!!
    example
1.you standing agaist a white wall!! to me (with low settings) i see a shadow of a persons sticking out like a sore thumb.
but to a person on high this area would be dark with a shadow cast over it thus giving an impression of not being seen.
hope that makes more sense to you.:)

p.s on low you can spot infrantary from 500k away due to the poor gfx detail.
to get a better understanding just give it a go all low but view distance max ,res doesnt matter if u can hande it high.
that confused me, almost as though you are supporting shadows, but I think i get the gist of it.
But! There are also good things about shadows which have helped me many times. Example:
Im walking around a map with building, lets say Dalian Plant, or Ghost town (in SF). Im walking around on the ground and I see the shadow of a person being displayed on the ground in front of me. From this I see where it is coming from and I look up at the top of the building next to me and I see somehwere there trying to snipe me and I kill him. Without shadows, you wouldnt have known he was there and he would have sniped you. Depending on the map, and where the sun is, shadows are displayed for many people.

Re: Low vs High Settings :Pictures:

I play on low and 100% view because of hardware. I'd want both graph + performance but I'm playing on a laptop so no upgrading. I'm content with what I have.

Having such a wide range of computers be able to play BF2, was smart on Dice's part because it would add more customers. (Instead of forcing shadows and other textures that would cripple slower computers).

The high end lighting and shadows makes things look nice but the advantage of being able to see into otherwise dark areas means that I play on low lighting setting.

It's like having a cheat that you can enable right in game.

sorry what i meant by a shadow of a player standing near a otherwise shadow area. i should of said a siloette of a person with the background making them stand out more.
i guess the shadows in the game can help you out, like not having them does also so i guess it kinda evens itself out (a bit)

i aint got nothing wrong with all high, its just not my cup of tea always prefer performance over goddies in all my online games, but thats just me :)

I would never put my lighting on low it looks so ugly.. I'd rather get owned by whoever is hiding in the shadow I could really care less, as long as everything isnt so bright.

Med settings, map loads in 20 secs. Everything on high: 70 secs, 1 high setting (any of geometry, textures, terrain etc.): 40 secs. With everything on low: 20 secs.

Verifying client data (with high settings): 70 secs, haven't checked with medium settings.

                          P4 2.6GHz@2.9GHz
                          2 GB RAM @ 223 MHz (DDR446)
                          GeForce 6800GS 256MB AGP 410 MHz / 1100 MHz
                          160 GB S-ATA 7200rpm HD

Will see what I can do about verifying client data.

but good sound gives you more advantages - Ultra High

personally, i played it on medium high..... until i noticed that it looks EXACTLY the same as it does on medium.... except medium runs smoother....

i played on my friends super computer, amd 64 4800 x2, 7800 GTX 2 gigs of ram, the whole deal, 1600 by 1200 res with a 5000 dollar computer....

and the visuals..... looked EXACTLY like mine at medium.... the only thing i noticed was the x fi audio, and the kits that the soldiers drop when theyre dead, which were super crisp and high res!

good thing to spend 5 grand on eh? what a waste of money, but if theyre that stupid, they dont deserve the money anyway.
