        Extreme Overclocking

Actually 4x512 is better for a user with a brain.

Overclocking is not only stupid, its also useless.

Gains seen from overclocking are usually nil compared to ones seen with a a peice of hardware designed for that speed. For instance....a 3.0ghz P4 will nearly ALWAYS outperform a 2.8 OC to 3.0.

Overclocking shortens hardware life, ruins warranty's and any ability to RMA ANYthing, and creates system instability 90% of the time (and anyone who doesnt see it is overclocking so little that they are not gaining anything).

For anyone but a retarded nerd boy, overclocking is worthLESS.

4x512 ends up being better for the fact you are paging 512 per slot at once rather than 1 gig in 2 slots.

EDIT: Before the idiots in the SIR community jump down my throat to make their balls feel bigger. Several AMD chipsets are actually hurt by filling all the slots with RAM. For instance mine has 3 slots and will run at PC3200, unless i fill all 3 then it downclocks to PC2700.

Re: What will 2 gigs of RAM get you?

i currently have 2x512MB sticks, both sticks arent all that great, im thinking.

(i just got these specs right off the labels on the sticks)
1 that came with my computer:
            Geil 512MB PC3200 DDR400 CL=2.5-6-3-3

            1 that i bought myself:
            Corsair ValueSelect VS512MB400

both sticks are about $50 or less these days....and at the time i wasnt very knowledgable about RAM (still not), so i just went the cheap way and got the ValueSelect, but im assuming since its cheaper, its not as good as some other sticks out there.

i would like to go up to 2GB of RAM, but my mobo only has 3 DIMM slots, 2 of which already occupied. so im thinking maybe get a 3rd stick thats 1GB.

but i wonder, what makes some sticks better than the other, causing 100's of dollars in price differences. would i be ok getting another ValueSelect stick? cuz i really dont know what case latency and those x-x-x-x numbers mean.

also, my mobo supports Dual Channel DDR400/333/266 up to 3GB if that matters.

Overclocking is a waste of time. Either spend the LITTLE BIT of extra money on the better hardware, or leave what you have alone. There is no point in ruining it so you can be 1337!!!!11

Good for the guy who benched.

He voided the warranty/RMA on a brand new chip. He beat out a stock chip just barely with a product that will now last 1/2 the lifetime of the stock chip. Oh but he saved money on the 3800....wait noe he didnt, cause the dumbass states write in the article that he FINANCED the chip.

Oh, he paid more for a ****tier product than a stock chip.

Doesnt matter since he is 1337ZOR NOW!!!1

I hate discussing things with forum fags who get their information from the weirdest corners of the internet.

I dont know why people get so hyped up over something that shortens their products life and essentially ruins it. But then again....tons of people in this world smoke/do drugs as well. So i guess its to be expected.

Re: What will 2 gigs of RAM get you?

Overclocking is for people who are willing to spend a bit of time choosing high quality components, so they can reap the most benefit from overclocking a processor. In the review, he takes a processor that costs 350 Dollars less than the 4800, and reaps similar or better performance from it. As long as operating temps are within the manufacturer's specified ranges, there will be no increase in failure rate.

Overclocking saves me hundreds of dollars every time I build or upgrade a computer. It's not debatable, it's a fact. I spend less on computers than people who don't overclock, and I've never had a hardware failure. My family gets better computers for less money, and so do my friends.

Perhaps money means nothing to you...? It's not how much you make, but how much you keep that matters. It's no surprise to me that your lack of education and/or understanding is costing you money, though. Get used to it.

                    On the contrary.

I dont really care what you do. But someone who isnt very familiar with Core Hardware should NOT have an OC'd PC for any reason. I hope when (not if) your friends PC's die prematurely....they come to your house and kick your teeth in.

Reguardless if you even stay in the "manufacturer heat range", youve stilled ****ed over any RMA or Warranty. And that will still cost in the long run if you do run into hardware that burn-in fails. and you WILL run into that someday if you build PCs for any length of time.

I spend money on quality parts, and then i DONT abuse them. Do what you want, you are just giving into fanboy trends.

So this statement you made is correct for arguments sake . I will use your own words to argue against your claims.
He spends 350$ for a chip then overclocks it to the speed of a 800$ chip assuming what you said is true and it only lasts half as long as it should. (which isnt true) So then he would have to buy 2 chips to last as long as one would 350*2 =700 meaning he saves 100$ even if the chip only lasts half as long.
Simple math. Also overclocking wont increase stress on the chip if adequate cooling is used. ITs really simple reasoning. Chips get old and die due to heat stress. If adequate cooling is applied and the chip gets not hotter than before the overclocking it will theoretically be subjected to the same exact amount of heat stress. Thus far the chip should last as long as its non-overclocked counterpart.
I expect you to call me a *** or something else because I also have collided with your fragile reality in which when your beliefs are questioned you react by thrashing out like a scared little animal.

The only thing overclocking does is make your computer operate at a faster frequency. Higher frequency= speed. DUh

Yeah, but as luck (or reasonably safe overclocking) would have it, they last. Plus, if it overclocks well, it's worth more money when I decide to sell it. So I'll have 350 bucks more to spend on nicer video card when I upgrade.

These components are built to last for years. Even if you overclock heavily and it cuts the lifetime in half, so what? Most gamers buy new hardware every year or two to keep up with the times.

I overclocked my system up the wazoo and get at least ~10+ fps increase in games. I'll be upgrading next year and sell off my parts that I have now. Its a cycle. Its worth it to overclock, if you dont you are just cheating yourself out of free extra performance.

This Sempron 64 2800+ I have came at stock 1.6GHz. I overclocked to 300x8, now its running at 2.4GHz. I'm sure if you know math, thats a 50% increase in speed, and my system runs a hell of a lot faster. A K8 Athlon 64 processor at this comparable speed (w more cache) costs around ~210 bucks. I bought my processor for $75.
