Actually , you have this backwards. The minimum requirement on the boxes assumes FULLY LOADED, not an almost bare PC. Multiple HD's, fans and optical drives...

I have a suggestion, and you can look this up if you want. I am a master electrician, for every new installation the national electric code says you should figure your load and size everything to 125%. Thats a fact. Yes it will work with less, but you are going to cause more heat and cause your installation (computer) to become a fire hazzard.

With that said, I think that most high end cards do recomend 400 watts PSU for system power. Do the math 400 x 1.25 = 500, Right? Well not really, you see NEMA (an association of manufactures) members usually build in a 20 to 25% safty margin and knowing that, when a person figures thier minimum power needs. A 400 watt supply will definately future proof your PSU. Will your computer run on less? Yes. How much less? Figureing the 25% safty margin out of the equasion you get 400 x .75 = 300 (depending on system components). So now, I believe you guys should be able to see both sides of this and just how SILLY posting arguments with no real facts, or alternate suggestions is. . . . . . .Red

Next generation high-end graphics cards will consume from 75 watts up to 150 watts of power. The PCI Express x16 connector can deliver up to 75 watts. In order to achieve 75W, an ATX12V power supply with a 2x12 main power connector is recommended. However, 75W can also be achieved with ATX12V power supplies with 2x10 main power connector when using the 1x4 power connector on the board.

A new connector on the graphics card has been designed to supply up to 150 watts. This means an entirely new power supply will be required for some new graphics cards.

Re: getting 100% EFFICIENCY from BF2!!!!!

My newly arrived 7800GT specifically states that it requires a 350W system PSU with a 12V current rating of 20A. I anticipate my current less than spectacular supply (Thermaltake 400W) to easily handle the new card. Also, the 7800GT consumes less power than a 6800Ultra or X850XTPE, especially under load.

Check this article at AnandTech for specifics - http://www.anandtech.com/video/showdoc.aspx?i=2496&p=10

That shows total system consumption of 236W when loaded, a fair way shy of 500W. All we need to have is a quality supply that will keep the amps within spec on the 12V and the card will work, with BF2 or anything else.

it may make a bit more sense ........

The PSU in that link has a 17amp 12v rail...how does that article factor in to what you are saying?

It IS a 500watt PSU...but the amp rating is FAR below what you yourself state is the minimum for the link on the top half of your own reply. So apparently not just any 500watter will do eh?

Isn't that the point of what everyone here is trying to tell you? You simply can't some in and say a 500 watt PSU solves all your problems if a link you provided for a 500 watt PSU doesn't qualify for the cards you are speaking about needing 500 watt PSU's.

Hey folks, ease up on Messr. Blade. He/She has an opinion and is welcome to it. A savvy PC geek (seems like you need to be one to play BF2) will know what to do and not to do. At least we are on a PC and not a console (sorry my bias showing).

it was more of a guide to show you that some cards are diffent than others even though there are both 7800gts

i agree i could av took a little more time to find a 30a psu but it was 4 in the moring when i posted.

basacly i just wanted ppl who spend 400pounds on a gfx card (i.e 7800gt)
to spend a little extra to ensure good performance,
and recomend 500 for there rigs if they use extra hd ect or overclock prosser ect.

didnt want to make ppl think they had to buy one.

                    spread the love baby :)

the poll supports ur statement just because it only includes high end graphics card and other power hungry computer parts. 6600 isnt a power hungry video card as a 7800gtx. So you dont need a 500w psu when you only need about 350-400w. Its like me buying a stack of 16x dvdr when my burner can only read 8x... your poll is correct while your post is just garbo

thats what my 1st post was about, not just a bare bone pc,it was aimed towards 2hd and 2 dvd and a few fans ?and i just added a few cards in the mixer, they all use differnt power and generate diffenrt heat temps.

keeping youre pc cool is a good thing, keeping it dust free and defraging is to,just stated that im my 1st post, how can that be garbo

its usfull if youre a novice, but not if you no what youre doing,
building a custom rig initself is some what experimental,i was just trying to recomend a bit of advice to go with expensive gear,i.e having ample power with good rated psu, alot of ppl dont just use a pc for games,500watts should be enough for extra fans and drives ect.

down the road you may want to upgrade to sli gfx and making sure youre geting enough power through the 12v rail is a good idea,

future prof youre gfx card and prosser/ram
what wrong with future proffing youre psu aswell,i couldnt call that garbo either.

all in all it just a good idea to keep you pc in tip top shape to get the best out of what you have in youre rig.

                          my spec are
                          amd semperon 2.6
                          1280 ram
                          2 hd
                          1xdvdrw
                          1xdvdrom
                          geforce 6600gt 500core/1000mem
                          550watt psu with 3fans
                          2xextrator fans

get 80fps in single player in bf2 and 60 online
                          bf2 map verifying times 1min 10sec<--was 1min 30but updated to latest drivers.

my pc isnot a top end pc but as i take good care of it,it does outperform some faster pc..

i have made newer rigs for diffent ppl..

my original post only mentions a small amount about psu,
i dont mind if you dont agree with that bit but to say you dont agree with the rest makes me wonder..

plz dont think im trying to be sarcastic im just trying to explain myself to you better.

What bothers me, and why I'm torn on whether you're receiving more than your fair share of hostility, is that you're going around other threads and spreading your 500w gospel. The only comfort I have is that you seem to be changing your idea a little based on our reactions, though without admiting to it. You're very stubborn. I might have been harsher than I should have been, and thus limited the impact of what was meant to be constructive criticism, but you have to understand that you're wrong.

The only reason your poll leans towards your position is because it's biasly worded. Of course people will choose a 500w over a less powerful PSU in casual conversation, and of course people who don't know much about PSU, and I consider myself just barely free from that crowd, will think that a stronger PSU can only be a good thing. My problem is that, with that frame of mind, they'll go to Newegg, or a similar site, and order the PSU's by price, and pick the cheapest 500w. And then they'll be wondering how everything went horribly horribly wrong after that.

My second computer will most likely have at least a 500w. I'm hesitant to mention that because you'll think it adds validity to your argument, especially since I said earlier that my second computer probably won't hit 500w. I said that before researching water cooling systems. A link I provided here showed me that a fairly intense water cooling system can add up to 50w to your system. However if I end up opting for an out of case water cooling system, I don't even intend to look at the 500 watters.

I get what you're TRYING to say. Just stop being so stubborn about it. Yes, the PSU is extremely overlooked, and yes, a quality unit is vital to a healthy computer. And yes, having enough wattage is also vital to a stable system.

You can fill your trunk up with car batteries and hook them all up in a redundant array, and still have problems starting your car in the winter. More wattage will not failsafe your computer.

"getting 100% EFFICIENCY from BF2!!!!!" : has nothing to do with wattage. You can get an overall peformance boost, or more accurately, use your hardware to it's full potential, if you get a psu that handles voltage efficiency better (psu that doesn't occilate wildly so your equipment keeps losing "energy") But you can't pump more wattage into it than it needs.

I'm sorry for being rude. I'm not sure if it's my "fault" that so much attention was brought to this thread, and whether that attention gave you the confidence, from defending yourself so much, that you now feel comfortable handing out incorrect advice throughout TotalBF2. I'm not applogizing for giving you validity though, moreso because, well to be honest, I figured I'd have a few backup posts from other people and that's it. But now apparently I've spawned a flamefest against you and that wasn't fair. But please think about what I'm saying. You keep saying you want to help the community. Well there's a lot more people here than you think that are still learning about hardware basics, and it's very easy to teach them the wrong stuff. If you want to help the community, really hit the books, come back and hit us with some advice that actually yeilds real-life results.
