This I definately agree with, to an extent. People upgrading(GPU wise) their old AthlonXP 1800 systems that still have an old 250-300watt no-name PSU will need this advice.

This advice is actually good. Even the guy who says his 6600 doesn't need that much juice...your next card might, or the card after that.

I do not want to buy a new PSU every time a new card comes out, using his 500watt advice would prevent this from happening.

While 500 might be overkill, that number covers possible SLI future useage. But if you are like me who has a minimalist system(1 HD, 1 optical drive) and never plans to go SLI ever...can make do with quite a bit less juice.

BUT...and the important but is his advice should take you into 3 new computers...as in the last PSU you'll ever have to buy...I think that's what he is trying to say.

That'd only make sense if it was a SLI compatible PSU. What's interesting is that he never once stated the difference between sli-compatible and non-sli-compatible psu units. An entire connection that makes all the difference in the world. Simply being 500w doesn't make it sli-ready.

Or for that matter, SATA compatible.

i dont blam you for any cristisim i have got beacuse of youre point of view, you are intightled to you opinon.
yes i have spread a bit about the 500watt around a few post, but for the reason that they could rule it out of the equiasion .i admit i can come across as stuborn.im one of those ppl that wont change his belives because someone doesnt agree,i would sound stupid if i made a post and then decided it was all false, thats somthing i wouldnt do.
but i admit i could have worded things differnt my grammer isnot that good but i still try to convey my msg best i can.and unfortunaly my confidence on the subject wont let me admit im wrong beacuse others think i am wrong.<--does that make sense(no irony intended)

My problem is that, with that frame of mind, they'll go to Newegg, or a similar site, and order the PSU's by price, and pick the cheapest 500w. And then they'll be wondering how everything went horribly horribly wrong after that.
maybe my poll is kind of biasly worded in the sense it a bit sort.but in my 1st post i did state good psu and bad ones, didnt think there was any piont in naming every bad brand out there and what watts they are.so i named things to look for in a good psu

notice how i put 30A on all the volts most psu will have 15/17/20+ect these
all will work but 30a or higher is the best.
as for recomending 500watt most new 500watt come with tripple fans for extra cooling this is great for keeping pc cool thus maximising youre cpu to 100% potential.<-- no irony intended

I said that before researching water cooling systems. A link I provided here showed me that a fairly intense water cooling system can add up to 50w to your system. However if I end up opting for an out of case water cooling system, I don't even intend to look at the 500 watters.
again that youre choice as its youre rig,all i ask is if you dont opt for the watercooling sytem and not go for 500watts as a result are you still getting a new psu or staying with youre exsiting one, reason i ask is beacuse if you do buy a new (example 450 psu)at a cost of $??.?? whay waste that money when ur upgrade after youre next upgrade may need more power then you would have paid for 2 psu at a cost of $??.?? when if you just bought a decent high rated voltage pritected 500+watt psu you would have saved youre self money in the long run.<--just a idea

what i mean by a thread called getting 100% EFFICIENCY from BF2!!!!!"
is not to take a part from it about 500w psu.the thread was about psu but also dust ,ram, ampreage ,defragg, combine all these elements and its possible to get 100% EFFICIENCY from youre pc thus making games like BF2 run best they can.having the best ram/cpu/gfx/ to date wont make youre pc invinsible to dust, overheated prosseser(lack of themal paste which i recomend change once a year)and poor disk managment AKA defrag,i also mention msconfig which for a novice is impossible without help,<--to many proseses running i.e 30-40 i run 21 proceses with anti virus and a firewall on

Re: getting 100% EFFICIENCY from BF2!!!!!

              1) Admiting to a mistake doesn't make you look stupid. Usually, if you really meant it, you'd suddenly gain the respect of the people who you were arguing with. Don't understimate the power of humility.

              2) What irony?

              3) What irony?

              4) Huh? You have something against water cooling? Look, I've been researching PSU's and how they work. I know how much wattage I'll need and will reconfirm everything (including anything more that I learn before I get it) before purchasing. It has nothing to do with futureproofing. I've got my second computer planned out already and really there's nothing else I'll be able to put into it (at least nothing that I want). So getting more wattage than I need is still rediculous.

              5) Can you post a picture of your process tree? 21 including system? I find that hard to believe. But still, that's not MSCONFIG. That's CTRL+ALT+DEL. Out of all the embedded Windows programs, MSCONFIG is the simplest.

              6) You're stubborness has nothing to do with me agreeing that a quality PSU is important. If you hand me a glass of soda in a clean glass and ice cubes made of p1ss, that doesn't mean I don't like soda or have a problem with how clean the glass is. You've said some good/correct things, and you've said some bad/wrong things. I'm pointing out what you said that was wrong, so that people won't think that you're correct. After all, not everyone can tell the difference between water and p1ss.

              7) Not directed to me so no comment

              8) Not directed to me but I was wondering about that as well. Wasn't going to post because I'm not a mobo expert, but as far as I know, there's no such thing as a sata compliant psu. It's all managed through the motherboard by the 12v connection. At least that's what I thought...

              9) It's still silly to have a 230 word disclaimer. It's not like you're going to get sued, and simply saying "this might not work for everyone" would have been enough. Course, what you really should have said was "this won't work for about 95% of you" (cheer up)

              10)

and do be affraid to ask my opinon on various pc related matters
Couldn't have said it better myself hehehe =P

where in me asking wheather or not you will STILL be buying a psu if u dont go with a water cooling soluition did it say any bad comment to u?????
i asked you if you wernt geting a water cooler will you still be geting a psu?
i asked this q's cus u said u would only need 500watt if you were geting watercooler.i then asked why buy a (example 450watt)when youre next upgrade after the one you are planing you may NEED more power resulting in paying for 2 POWERSUPPLYS when if you got a good one now with ample wattage you would save money, that was q's not a dig at watercooling ??

trying to compair things i say to car battrys and **** cubes is stupid,i no what i mean when im replying or asking q's dont need stupid examples.

type sata psu in google and you will find a few only diffence is they have more conectors for 4 sata or somthing .

what i ment by admiting a mistake was,if for example i didnt agree with my 500watt gospal<-- as u call it
i would not have made the thread in the 1st place.
go and make a thread about somthing factual (example errr you can get all youre medals in bf2 by typing sdjfhsjhdfsfksadbfksdbfksbfsbfskdf in the console, then after ppl lol at it,say i iwas wrong and see if they all praise you and adore u for being so hounest....sounds stupid doesnt it.
ok i admit the word irony was the wrong word as i said b4 my grammer sucks i should of said no offence intended-

and finally So getting more wattage than I need is still rediculous.<--what u said.
disagree becuase of the point i made unless you can garantee me that the next gfx card cpu ram blah blah isnt going to use more watts,
whats wrong with getting more instead of you buying a 450 now and then another 500 later or as the case could be more!!!
i didnt whant u to waste you money getting 2 but as its youre money carry on and do what you want nit. :)
i edited the spelling mistake i made regarding the help with ur pc thingy.

on that pic take away 1 more proses for taskmangr so its 19

No I just didn't understand what you were saying because you're hard to undestand sometimes. I'll be getting two psu because I'll have two computers. This one, and the new one.

I dunno, I kinda liked my soda and p1ss cube analogy. =P

agreed my writing maybe hard to understand, but youre answer was like you did understand what u thought i was saying.thats the reason i tryed to make myself clearer.
dont matter and way,if you do not unterdstand what im saying (i no this a small pain)just ask me what u thought i meant and ill correct or agree if it what i meant.
yeh the **** cube analogy was funny, just didnt like comparing things like to something i was tying to explain.

as for the prosses tree thingy
1.windows doesnt need extra prossess running(it used more and more ram)
so triming down to the bare can give a small boost.
2.there are several ways to do it.
an easy one in ctrl.alt.del bring you prosses tree up and google a prosses and get a decription of what it is.if youre happy u dont need it then terminate it.it will pop back up after a restart.
3.if you use spybot 1.4 search and desteroy you can go in to advance mode and piont to tools then system start up you will be presented with a list of things that start up with the cpu(thus adding to youre prosses tree)
things like winamp tray, deamon tools, nvidia display centre to name a few.
you can just untick them from the list and they will not start up with the cpu.(thus lowering youre prosses tree.

im thinking of making another thread about gaining as mutch out of youre pc as you can with help with this subject also some free apps and tips on how you can make youre pc a bit faster.a suggestion on a name for this thread would be good.

i will make screenshots of steps ect for ppl who arnt familiar with it.

good luck with the new cpu have fun with 2 :0

No, I know all about services.msc, msconfig startup tab, spybot etc. I just need most of the services that I'm running, and the rest of them I can afford to run because I have more than enough ram (2 x 1GB OCZ Platinum 2-3-2-5 @416mhz) with all Windows effects removed (theme remains) and my page file on a separate drive.

But I'm on a network, ATI likes to run several copies of itself, I overclock, and like to keep my chat programs up always. Still, I'm impressed at your tree.

Also, I suddenly find myself wondering, is English your second language? I don't remember you saying as such, but if it is you really should have mentioned it (if you hadn't), because I, and probably everyone else, probably would have given you a hell of a lot more slack about how your posts sound.

But I'm on a network, ATI likes to run several copies of itself, I overclock, and like to keep my chat programs up always. Still, I'm impressed at your tree.

Also, I suddenly find myself wondering, is English your second language? I don't remember you saying as such, but if it is you really should have mentioned it (if you hadn't), because I, and probably everyone else, probably would have given you a hell of a lot more slack about how your posts sound.
im glad u no msconfig startup, saves me time :) if u look at me sig u should see my flag,i live in uk,was born here blah blah ,i no i maybe hard to understand to you as you are from usa and you say some things diffently,
i.e do u say "i have a idea" or i have an ideal" diffent words but same meaning.i also type far faster than my brain can, wasnt the best english pupil at school was more in to sprots(football aka siccer)rhater than learning harder.

Why barely get by with the bare minimum? Then when you need power for your ram/cpu/gpu you have problems? If you have a 350Watt power supply it’s time to upgrade to a 500Watt PSU, no if ands or buts. If you have retail computers make sure they fit the designated psu bay and the motherboard does not require any special connections other then 12v 4 pin connector and the 20 pin or 24 pin connector from your psu.
Nonsense. I voted 500 Watt, yes... But thats because on thw whole more wattage means ability to withstand a higher current draw..

                          I have:

                          AMD 64 3700 San Diego
                          X850XT PCI-Ex
                          4 x 512 mb Corsair XMs3200XLL
                          2 DVD drives
2 Sata drives (1@Sata2 not in RAID)
                          Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS

My power supply is a Tagan TG480-U22. It is more than enough mainly due to its ability to do things like manage a max output load of 48 Amps on the 5V rail. Not many PSUs can do that under 500 watts.

But Im fairly sure my system would still work just as well with a 380-400 Watt PSU. I doubt I'd go below that.

If I was running SLi with two 6800s or 7800s then 600 Watt may be safer.

the point isnt just 500watts it also amperage, you have enough amperage thus yours works fine.
if ur felling confident put a cheap 350 psu in ur rig and see if there a diffence.
i mearly stated some facts about old 350 and why recomend the minimum i like to be over the minimum for safly reasons, like overheating most new 500watts have tripple fans which helps.you not really going to get mutch of a boost if up uprade from 350 to 400.just go and get a good psu with more than enough power.that in itself is not nonsense it a point of view that i have due to rather alot of testing and custom rig building.if you on the other hand wish to conduct these test youreself with other ppl cpu and risk using a weak supply of power then all the best to you.i on the other hand would rather be safer.

ive seen a 3 week old geforce fc 5700 oc 256 from bfg(who garantee the card for life)fry to the point of no return whilts being in a cpu that didnt have enough power.the card was 150 uk pounds.<--why waste that mutch and not take care of it with ample power.
my advice is safe(500watt 30A)of course lower psu will work but how exacally can u tell when its going to go?
i listed a few of the new cards which were made last year.most ppl psu are the oldest thing in the cpu'bar hd.
so upgrading cards should be folowed by updated psu.(casual gfx card buyer)those who upgrade every time a new card comes out can afford to take the risk.but i no i wouldnt
