Re: My 5 year old daughter plays!

My 12 year old sister plays with me, but my dad wont let her by the game because of violence (hes convinced theres blood, though theres not). So we either play the demo together, single player or I let her play. Im gonna buy the game for her and shes gonna pay me back. But she sucks, horribly. I keep trying to help her to make her better, but she sucks. The only reason she likes playing is because its "fun" to fly around in a plane and crash. wasting a plane (sigh) im still teaching her how to be a team player and "win". I think its awesome that your 5 year old girl plays. Video games are very fun and everyone can enjoy them. Then only games you really wanna steer away from are the ones like resident evil (trust me, when I was a lil kid my parents bought me that i didnt even ask for it, I had nightmares for months). Just make sure she doesnt grow up addicted to everquest and sitting at home staying up till 5am questing and skipping school to game .

Re: My 5 year old daughter plays!

      That is really ignorant thinking.

5 year olds percieve things differently than we do. They are affected by these things with out even knowing it. They do not grow up wanting to shoot people, but when they are angry BF2 pops into their mind. That leads to shooting. Now, of course everyone does not take their thoughts into action, but you have to admit that when the idea is their and someone is in a fit of rage (which all people get into at some time) then their is a real possibility of them taking action.

Im only saying this because I think it is important for parents to know that those things DO affect children, espeicially under 10 or even 12. And it has nothing to do with being dumn or smart when you are in a fit of anger, it just has to do with what pops into your head and if you have been playing a shooter game sense 5 years old (with your father's encouragement) then it becomes much more rectified.

Unless you constantly tell your children the things that are wong are wrong, then they will believe they are right. Allowing (and encouraging) violent games at a young age increases the chances of that child acting violent inthe future, its a fact.
Again, you assume they only carry ONE piece of that scenario into reality. If you look at the whole thing as a game, she was aggrivated by someone forcing her to be unable to play for 15 seconds so she retaliated by forcing others to not be able to play for 15 seconds. If you look at it as reality, she was fighting in a war and got intentionally shot by a fellow soldier, than, by an act of god, came back to life, and went to kill that traitor to his country to stop him from killing again. You, however, in a way which is ever-so convient, act as though a child's mind would link the reality of what happened (getting angry) to what happened in the game universe (shooting at people in retailiation).

And, again, you blew right over the question I asked about heroism. If these games can make kids killers, why not also brave soldiers? Heroic policemen? Why do they only see "killing" and not "killing to stop a nuke from detonating in Manhattan and killing millions"?

Kids have their own sense of right and wrong. Ever heard your kid say "That's not fair!" "That wasn't nice!" No, they don't say "That was immoral." or "Your methods of achieving that which you desire is unethical", but they still have a sense of right from wrong. Not every kid listens to it (like adults), but they are all capable.

And I want to see how that's a fact. Show me an article.

And if you find yourself unable to respond to this post without changing the subject, using circular logic, or admitting you are wrong, please feel free to lash out and throw a really childish insult at me.

        WOW.

didn't expect that much of a response. (especially the negative ones) Normally she plays for maybe an hour at a time or so and mixes it up with teen titans, barbie, hello kitty and my little pony. the reason she likes it is twofold... first.. her daddy.. (ME) was in the Marines for the last 8 years and to her.. having been surrounded by the images of weapons and tanks her entire life.. this is just another day at daddy's office. (incidently now I sell TV Advertising) Secondly, she spends more time on single player just flying around because she loves the jets/helos.

She has never and will never play gta or anything like that on my computer. as a matter of fact.. she has played HL, HL2 <-- all the way through and beat it on her own, CS, UTK2004, but never doom 3. I think that would scare her.

Now as to how gaming has already helped her to pwn her class at school.. she is FIVE and already can use the computer better than anyone in her class.. its helping her to read at an accelerated rate as well. Her math skills and cognative reasoning are astounding.

I attribute some of this to her exposure to video games. She is also learning to cope with defeat, unfairness and overall asshatery from other people. In my assesment, she is going to grow up a well-adjusted very smart (and beautiful) girl ready to face life head-on.

Re: My 5 year old daughter plays!

I would be much less surprised hearing playing BF2 made children smarter than violent. Especially if you play using tactics. Most parents act like everything except eating vegetables and reading is bad for kids, but as I always say (starting now) "There's no quick thinking, working toghether, or strategy involved in reading a book. There is to be good in battlefield 2 though."

While I'm not against exposing her to voilent games as long as that's what she wants, I'm surprised she's not disturbed by the gore in them when she's assumbly not been playing for very long.

We are certainly not bad parents and she sees it for what it is - just a game.

Unfortunately she has got me banned from my favourite server for tking
My 3 year old plays all the time, he loves it, and he got me banned too from a couple servers..lol..everytime he kills the "bad guys" he comes running to get me, and shows me the scoreboard from where he killed them...lol... I can't help it if my son it smart enough to pick up the keystrokes needed to play a game, and then wants to play. That does not make me a bad parent.

To each his own I guess. I have two daughters, one 8 and one 3. I am also an ex-marine. They have better things to do than pretend they are killing people online. I want them to see some beauty in this world before they are exposed to the crap I had to deal with.

Well as a mother , i wont and think its stupid to let them onto a game ful of strangers, now you have posted her name expect some weird folks to follow her all over the servers now.

There is nothing proud of letting a baby play a game with strangers, dont you read the papers, dont you see the news of kids being groomed by strangers on the net.

I think it would be in the best interest of the baby to delete this thread and only allow her to play in single player.

Actually its better to expose them to the inevitable, under your supervision, than to "shelter them way" until they themself meets people online by themself, and when they do that you will have no control over it.

Yeah, when I grew up people told us that if we played pac-man too much it would have that effect on us.... yeah, right, we said - as if in 20 years time we will be running around darkened rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive electronic music! [/billhicks]

My last comment for this thread, when my daughter was starting school, 5 years old , i asked her , what do you do if a stranger stops and offers you sweets , she then replied PLEASE!!!!!!!

So your daughter is smart , thats good, but why BF2 is good learning beats me. and you could of thought of a more suitable name for her too, Its just shouting hey perverts look im five and my name is ashley.

If your walking down the street and a stranger stops and says hello there , your not going to stand there and say hey ashley its fine to talk to strangers are you. and why are you so shocked on the negitive response, most of us are good parents and know what is right and wrong....

and no i am not an overprotective parent that my kids dont have a life without a pc. There is better things for kids to do than sit on a pc and type in dress up dolly and get through to a pervert sight .
