They simply aren't having fun anymore.

Why? Most games have devolved into utter domination by planes and helicopters, which are extremely overdone and overpowered.

Planes rapidly heal back to full health, and essentially have unlimited ammo. Both heal and resupply are accomplished by a quick passover any airfield. The unlimited Bomb and rocket spam do truly massive damage, leaving those in a large area with little hope of survival.

Anti aircraft guns only get two shots, which are nearly useless. They rarely hit, even if you are careful to fire only after flares have fallen. They only do incremental damage, which a plane may instantly heal by a quick passover of an airfield. Even the anti-aircraft vehicles have little hope of success. Though a direct hit with an anti tank weapon utterly destroys any jeep or truck, a helicopter shrugs it off without problem. Even a direct hit with a tank shell does not destroy a helicopter, this is absurd. The flak guns on the armored personnel carriers do damage, but must be trained on helicopters for a long time to bring them down, while any decent helicopter pilot would pop them in one second after discovery. No stinger missiles are included in this game, so those running about are simply fodder.

A helicopter must move slowly or hover long enough to take several hits from an anti-tank weapon to die, something only newbies would tend to do. Support machine guns do little. Whatever hits are scored, are quickly shrugged off via healing at any helipad.

Worse, a person manning an anti aircraft gun is instantly highlighted for planes to see, manning one is like screaming, "kill me now!". The designers were idiots to do this.

The result of all of this is a few helicopter and airplane pilots running around with massive scores and almost never dying, while the people actually playing the game are demoralized by being killed over and over. This is not an obscure case involving only highly skilled pilots, it is the norm with run of the mill pilots on most every server. This is not fun for anyone but the pilots, and drives many people to quit for good. Not just experienced players, but even worse, the newbies who should be getting hooked on this game.

Is this really what the designers had in mind? A flight simulator with fodder, it's just not fun anymore.
I think it is just you.

Re: Why many people are quitting BF2 for good -- it's not fun anymore

I stand by what I say regarding being a tank-whore or a plane/chopper-whore. It takes way more concentration and skill to survive a long time in a tank in the battlefield. In a tank I am at risk the entire time. I have to look all around me and above me (which is pretty hard when the turret doesnt point so high!). I also need to listen for close footsteps, which can just be friendlies but could also be enemy special-ops/engineers.

How many times in a plane do you have to look around all the time? You don't: As you know where the AA guns are and all you're worried about is other jets. But if you fly at full throttle all the time and use your flares wisely you shouldn't be hit.

Meanwhile Im on the ground shooting as many enemies as I can. But I can't stay still - and I can't go anywhere near open ground. If I try to help capture a flag I have to watch out for respawning TOWs, engineers, spec-ops, ATs, helicopters and planes. No offence, but if I survive that, kill attacking enemies and capture that point. I have more skill than you - its pretty simple.

I cannot press a nice button to divert TV missles or incoming bombs. Any pilot or gunner with any skill can own me with their bombs, spam all 14 missles at me, or hover high use the TV guided missile.

I cannot steeply pull up or away and repair on a nice repair pad. Im there in a tank that glows on your HUD. If you think by killing me it makes you a skilled player then you're wrong. Im not saying you suck, but you're misguided and delusional.

I cannot drive into the sun and lose you. And somehow, popping smoke sucks, but can be used to throw crap pilots off the scent.

I sometimes fly jets just for a change. And it didnt take me very long to bomb tanks and boats pretty easily. I rarely get shot down, I usually crash mainly because I get too cocky - so if anyone looks at my stats, thats why. But its patently obvious that Im in no real danger while flying except from enemy pilots or a lucky AA missile.

Simple, don't let us take your jet.

I agree with the more fun part. Only a few aircraft are in any one game at a time and yes the constant attacks etc can wear thin but it is the same for both sides on different maps.

I have just bought a new PC for circa $2000 to play more and have more fun. My AMD3000, nvidia 128 1 gig ram pc was obselete hehe.

I think people can bored with games when they feel they "don't make a difference anymore", i.e. they cannot really improve their stats, got most the badges, find other newer games that offer more challenge. The ones that leave the game cause of aircraft and bunny hoppers is probably a lower percentage in comparison

I am new to BF2 and I am still figuring my way around some maps. Once I have mastered my way around the maps then I will be ready for new maps. Some have been playing for awhile and need new maps like SF expansion pack. I can not stand the planes either, and the AA does not work well unles you can see their red letters of their names. A longer kill rate would be nice. Two shots and they should be fish food. The gruond defensiev weapon is awesome. One shot on a tank and bye bye. The game is weak on air defense. A Map pack or anther expansion may be what some experience player may need, but for now, the curren maps are fine for me. However, I am looking at purchasing the expansion pack soon.

It would be nice if the USS Essex was better for more than just shooting infantry, if the machine gun on it could kill a plane in a couple hits that would be awesome.

That is your play time, you are not new to BF2, having 6 hours would make you new, you have over 4 days of play time. You should have more than a basic understanding of the game and the maps.

Agree 100%. I have way more respect for someone who can stay alive and get a decent score in armor on a map like Kubra dam or Oman, than someone who carpet bombs any square that shows up on their ground radar.

The guns on the Essex should a) Have more armour, and b)shoot proximity flak shells like in 1942. it was easy to down planes on the flak guns with a little practice on the lead.

I think if you can't fly you need to find another game. Like The Sims 2 or King Kong. I hear they are good. No flying required. :|:

Your cluelessness is astounding. Whether or not I can fly isn't the question... at all. It's the simple fact that the way planes and AA are implemented creates a serious imbalance and can ruin the gameplay.

I wouldn't mind seeing maps with no vehicles where everyone is just on foot.

It just seems sometimes that if you DON'T use vehicles, chances are you'll die A LOT more than killing.

The stats sytem and stupid unlock nonsense has turned BF2 into a pure Stat padding whore rape fest.

Nobody cares about your stupid stats and your overinflated ego driven sigs. I wish you could just play against other people, rifle to rifle, tank to tank, and let the best man win. Most of all, just have fun.

This game is too consumed by exploits and stat padding campers. Thats why my favorites list is pretty short. Try pubbing on some unranked servers. There is much better gameplay simply because the stats dont matter.

that is true to an extent. i have been in many unranked servers/mod servers and i run into as many if not more idiots than in ranked servers. its roulette anywhere you go, you take your chances everytime. one day a favorites server can be as much fun as you have ever had and the next day it is one of the worst. another thing is that since stats do not matter people do not care if they tk you or worse.
