Re: Why many people are quitting BF2 for good -- it's not fun anymore

I am not optemistic about the coming patch.
I think it is now to switch to civilization iv. I hesitated a lot before taking this decision because having two games on my machine means no work :)
These days I play once a week because the game is not as appealing as it used to be.

For example I got sick of people walking with the greanade launcher. That thing will remain after the patch. Also I got sick of bunny hopping, that one will also remain after the patch. The game is getting very boring and disgusting.

RIP BF2 until a nice mod revives you.

they should add a re-fueling system to the aircraft... and maybe even take away the rediculous infinate ammo... but they need to balance it out.... make sure that when your running low on ammo, then you should also be running low on fuel... and planes should only be able to do 1 bomb drop before they need to be re-supplied... and all the refueling, reloading, should have to be done by LANDING at your airstrip... and it should all take time... about 2 1/2 minutes max for each particular task (refueling, resupplying, repairs) ... i think it would add some much needed time out of sky for the aircraft

Forcing the planes to land is a bad idea IMO, they are sitting ducks if they fly slow or land AtA missiles have a hit ratio of about 95% when the plane is on the ground or flying slowly, however when you are flying the hit ratio is somewhere around 10-15%.
I flew slowly after enemy transport chopper, fired 4 missiles, all 4 missed and flew passed veered of and managed to hit all of our airvehicles (2 Cobras, 1 Blackhawk and the other jet), silly.
It would be much easier just to crash the plane and wait for it to be respawned.

If they improve the AA it will be much better, but making them to strong would make the choppers useless because if they're supposed to hit planes without any major problems they'll surely take out choppers every time.

You most definately won't be disappointed. :) Civilization IV is a great game, hasn't let me down yet. Make sure to get the 1.52 patch if you haven't yet, gives a little boost in performance as well as a little thing here and there in the interface to help you out.

the solution to this is simple -

make flares have a 10 second reload time.

            thats it.

Teamwork/VOIP between 2 AA guns will take down jets easily if this is the case - I just find it annoying that the flares reload faster than the AA emplacements.

I mean, wow, just because I focus on what I'm doing and don't give a rat's rear orifice about who's making the big kills in the planes, it doesn't give me a right to enjoy playing the game does it?

I really must remember to be all worried about what other people are doing and let that annoy me to the point of destroying and entertaining pastime!

Thank you oh so much for setting me straight in that matter! Without this vital post, I might have been tempted to continue enjoying the hella outta BF2.
i agree totally w/ his sentiments, although not quite with so much attitude, but with a lil more reasoning; it is very possible to take down choppers with the aa. a few months back while practicing with about 15 ppl in the -moc- practice server we had drills. everything from shootouts at long ranges on the airfield, anti-tank on fast moving jeeps, grenade launching targets at long range, etc, and aa against seasoned (bf42, bfv experienced) chopper pilots. while during the aa practice he strafed and flared and went out of view and made manuevers to kill me, i killed him with one pair of missiles. the point is if you are not killing anything with it you are not using it as wisely as it could be used. i kill more pilots than pilots kill me in the aa turret and w/ few tk's. not braggin just saying if used tactfully your k:d will remain positive. In keeping in line with WG's quote, this game (imo) is only getting better w/ time. totalbf2 will be sure to let us know of all the new and exciting things that are to come from all the modders putting their time into making something for everyone's enjoyment, and if the not-so-enthusiastic-fun-havers of this game stop playing bf2, it wont make the game less fun for us having fun.

                  About the original post

I agree, to a point. I have not touched BF2 for a week now.. and i agree that helicopters and aircraft are way to dominant. I played a game of sharqi on TG with all the helicopters removed, and let me tell you, it was much more fun then with. Gimpy forgets that helicopters and planes are so powerfull they take away the fun from the player.

I'm not sad tho, the mods will be here within a few months, and i will be happy.

Re: Why many people are quitting BF2 for good -- it's not fun anymore

i've been practicing with AA a lot more than normal recently and have actually had a bit of success taking down jets and choppers.

if a chopper is flying high (like a blackhawk) directly towards me, i aim as far above them as i can while maintaining a lock. after they deploy their flares, fire one missle at them from this angle and check to see if it hits. if so, immediately fire the second. rather than aiming directly at the incoming chopper, the added angle allows the missle to correct its path and will usually hit its target.

if a jet is my target, i try to aim as far behind it as possible to be able to track the jet engine in the rear. knowing the direction the jet is headed, you can allow the AA missles the necessary angle to track the jet as long as possible.

do some experimenting with missle tracking in the AA, and you'll probably experience a higher hit ratio, as well. i still get team vehicle damage every now and again, but less so with this methodology.

choppers can be taken out very easily by other means.

though i think the antitank should get an unlockable stinger.

look at it from a pilots point of view... would you like to fly around the map know that what ever you do your gonna do your gonna die?? its quite easy if your on the ground to duck and hide out of a planes way... im startin to wonder if the people just jelouse of the pilots score??

The biggest problem with planes are, the actual hit has not much to do with the person firing it, therefore skills dosnt matter as much as anti tank

Other than that, people whine less about killed by a tank 5 times in a roll while in anti-tank kit, than dying 5 times in a roll in an AA turret.

This is the advanced wisdom, kids.

In real life, the purpose of AA is not to kill planes. It's to limit their operational flexibility. Ground-based AA attempts to deny the enemy some of the benefits of his local air superiority (which he obviously has, or his plane wouldn't be there or would be REAL busy.) If there's no flak coming up, the aircraft are free to loiter wherever, lining up targets at leisure and blowing them into the next millenium. SAMs defending a target sharply constrain the attack aircraft's freedom of action.

In game terms, this means that people using the AA aren't getting many kills, and they die a lot. It's not huge fun if you are stats-obsessed. But don't think the ingame AA isn't effective. No, it's not stopping those enemy jets; but it's radically revising where they fly, what they attack, and how effective they are.

Me, I love the in-game AA. It's always my first choice. Kills are sweet when I get 'em, but I get a thrill every time I light up an enemy fighter and watch him drop flares, break left, and abandon his bombing run on my team's armor assets. I get a dozen AA victories for every kill, viewed that way.

The balance of reality makes for boring balance in a game. Your defense is useless here. Planes in BF2 are far too involved in the second by second battles on the ground, and thusly should have a more direct and effective counter.

When planes stick to flying very high and hitting strategic targets occasionally, then I'll accept AA that deters. Until then, I want AA that kills.
