This is something I agree upon. The fact it is there should tell you it is meant to stop base raping yet it is so underpowered. If anything it should be overpowered so us flyboys won't go anywhere near it.
tbh, the base AA should be beefed up and enemy uncappable bases should be fair game to any pilot willing to go near them to risk losing his jet for a few easy kills
First of all. I am ****ed at the fact that the essex has no radar what so ever, it is a sitting duck for the plane whores and base rapers. There needs to be a radar on board that ship. I ususally play AA in the game, a role most choose not to play because the enemy gets easy kills, but I am determined. The one thing that gets me is that the 20 mm DU rounds are very weak compared to the real thing. The planes are very powerful in this game and there needs to be adequate defense. Also DU rounds do not blow up as they hit, they penetrate the armor and rip it to shreds using its velocity. SOrry for the rambling but I am just frustrated at this and want to have a bigger than 1:5+ (guess) ratio in AA. Thanks
Maybe it gives impression that's underpowered, but that's exactly how it is in reality. Those rounds from the rotary gun have limited range and are efective against choppers, but as far as fast jets, it's a different story. As for your 1:5 k/d ratio, I can only say one thing: I recently got the veteran air defense badge. If you check my stats you'll see that I have 1309 kills with 403 deaths as air defense, but that's during 30+ hours as air defense, and 99% of that is on the Essex. It's all about practise.
Although For game purposes, I still believe its underpowered. And that big white dome you see isnt where you sit, its where the 2 radar sets are located.
The biggest problem with the gun is its range compared to the range planes can shoot you to death with their machine gun... another thing I've noticed is that a lot of times I can't even lock on for some reason even though a plane is right in front of me flying low

I have noticed this as well. Sometimes I will start shooting the cannon at planes and the lock on totally disappears.
I know its a game. I know how to use the gun. I aim properly infront of the aircraft to compensate for time delay etc... at the same momement I pull the the trigger on the SAMs to make it more deadly. The Aircraft is my enemy, The aricrafts enemy is me. If the airplane wants to take me out so be it. But if i want to take the aircraft I will do it. My favorite role to play in the game is air defense, I love it I will do my best for my TEAM, my commander, and I will not stat pad
I just shot down 5 J10s today in a 300 ticket round. Boy it felt good. I know it gets boring after a while; but man for every j10 i kill i save like 30 people on my team; if its a good pilot he may kill me 10 times before i shoot him down; got to get busy shooting the j10s out of the sky; over and out; Oh and i got veteran air defense badge yaaaa :-)
Honestly I also think the same thing but Dice has bigger and better things to worry about than just the AA equiptment, eventhough its a good thing. All I can say is, give it time and let Dice have time to change everything.
