I'm usually one of the first on a map and I don't have what you'd call a top machine. The time it takes to verify client data varies but no matter whether it takes 10 seconds or 1 minute, I'm still one if the first to get in.
I have a P4 2.6Ghz, 2Gb RAM, Geforce 6800GT AGP, 200Gb SATA, 10Mb Cablemodem...

I have an almost identical computer to yours, difference is a 6800 GS GFX, and 160 GB Seagate SATA, what HDD brand do you have.
Load time for me is 30 sec to 1 min 20 sec. Before I got 2 GB of RAM it usually took 20-30 sec. However on a local game it takes 2-3 sec.
Punkbuster wann does that get updated? at the verifying **** or when you are playing, cuz that can explain the enormous slow pc i some days seem to have.

I have a Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 or 7200.8 (can't remember which)...
As a closing note, if you guys wait 5 minutes every time a new map loads, I'd seriously consider trying something else, like not playing. 5 minutes is a long time. And if it happens frequently, it's just plain insane.
have a look in you program files ea/battlefield2 and are there any blank gaps there.coz there are in mine and this could have something to do with it but try what i said last post

My crap hoster . It's a free web site hoster thing, you can create a free website like freewebs.com/bf2. I've used twice my monthly bandwidth in two weeks.
I have the same prob and i have found if you play on a server without battle recorder on im on in 5 sec but if i play on a server with it on 5 min try it and see how long it takes hope it hellps.
As far as verifiying, the Battlerecorder is the solution, I have no doubts and have done a bit of reseach on it. It doesn't matter how many people are in the server or the amount of ram. I tested it with 512ram, on a server with a ping of 114 with battlerecorder, average time was approx 2mins. Same ram, same ping, full server without batlerecorder, 10secs on average. I think thats it, all Dice needs to do is figure out why, and do we really need recorders running on the servers?
