Free content isn't something new to gaming, free content in patches was the norm in the BF series and any other game. This will probably set a new trend, unfortunately.

they dont need to look at valve, they have the earlyer BF's to look at as an exemple,in bf1942 we had loads of new maps, dont remember the names of all, in the pacific maps we even got new engineer weapons, skins for the american soldiers, new jeeps for the japs and new little boats with torpedos, BFV we had some new maps wich 2 of them gave us underground battles, new helicopters, new planes adn new little tanks wich look like they had came out of star wars.
i just hope the same happens with BF2 or else i will be veeeery disapointed :/

It isn't going to set a new trend because no one is going to buy it, right guys? Right?
Re: Battlefield 2 Booster Packs set for Spring 2006 release.
I'll wait 'n see.
If it contains some interesting elements and they work a system out that's not going to fragment the community too bad, I don't have a problem with paying a few bucks for good professional content.
That is, assuming there's a retail release. I doubt very much I'd bother buying/DLing it through their on-line system.
Re: Battlefield 2 Booster Packs set for Spring 2006 release.
just saw the modern combat booster pack in the newsletter and this is what the modern combat booster pack contains:
Play 3 new maps; Frostbite, Full Frontal and Hidden.
Take control of the new attack snowmobiles with dual-mounted machine guns, modified pickup trucks with .50 cal armament, assault vans loaded with mini-guns, and a RIB boat with four open positions.
All-new arctic camouflage for your soldiers helps you blend into the winter background.
if the pc packs have that its ridiculous cause we used to have more than that for free in the earlier BF's...

Yeah...and when they ADMITTED they didn't even plan on patching past the next patch (1.2) that we're supposed to be getting soon? These next two better danged well fix the problems that have existed since the get go.

If this sets a new trend with the Battlefield series, good ridance I say. I once great franchise ruined by a bunch of mentally imcompetent idiots who have no idea what customer satisfaction means anymore.

Actually, they did mention that they are gathering thoughts for future patches. They never say that they have plans for releasing patches beyond anything they are working on at the time since unexpected things might occur... like EA abandoning franchise support funding or the player base walking away for something else.

If it happens, it wouldn't be the first time and it won't be the last.
RIP Tribes
RIP X-COM
RIP Dungen Keeper
RIP Red Barron
RIP X-wing vs TIEfighter
RIP Tron
RIP all D&D based games (Atari owns the PC license and you haven't experianced publisher suckage until you've delt with them)

What worries me about the statement they made is that they didn't PLAN on going past a certain point, especially with the game in the shape it has been since release. A more sensible approach would have been to have the mentality that "we're going to patch it until it's fixed", yah?

I could go on here... but I'll spare ya'll.
Hmm, I've not had much trouble with Atari...of course, the only thing I've gotten semi-recently from them is Rollercoaster Tycoon 3, and ignoring a few major issues with the game on it's release, it's been in decent shape I say. At least they had people visiting their forums to keep us updated almost every day...wish EA/DICE would care that much and be more involved in the community. =/

Of cource that's a much more rational statment... but we're dealing with a big business here. Rationalism is the second victem of big business (being "human" is the first).

Oh the Atari stories...
Did you ever play Tron 2.0? No, of cource not. It sucked! It was a super promising game with some very interesting mechanics, but it was shoveled out the door before it was finished and NEVER patched into a playable state!
Then there was Atari's deal with SecuROM. OMG. If you don't know, SecuROM was/is an anti-copy system that prevents you from burning usable "backups". The main problem is that in aprox 30% of Optical drives a game that uses SecuROM will NOT read the disk at all. It was included on the original release of Never Winter Nights and caused so many problems that Bioware patched it out (big <3 to those guys for caring about their fans!). Atari reacted by threatening to pull their license to develop D&D based games if they ever did anything like that again. So BioWare (being a perty cool group) perty much told Atari to stick their license where the sun don't shine and abandoned doing D&D games (NWN2 was outsourced, BTW).
We all love to hate EA, but ya gotta remember to put things in prepective... BF2 really has been better supported than many other products out there and there's MUCH worse people to deal with.

Atari has done alright behind Unreal Tournament. Lots of nice and free content with that franchise.
That's because Epic still controls the license. Epic has Atari by the balls reguarding all things UT. If Atari was ever to annoy Epic, they would lose a big money maker and UT would have a new publisher prolly on the same day.

Goddamn being nickled and dimed sucks.
Why wouldn't they, they already suckered half the community into an expansion pack that basically puts the same amount content into the game as previous BF games.
