I dont like to play as combat-support, so why use it anyway...
what? so what do you play as? the clown class? i believe spec ops is combat, sniper is support, assault is combat, support is combat, engineer is support, medic is support, AT is combat. those are your only options... what are you talking about?
if im support class and im capping a flag ill shove on my gas mask and coat the area with the stuff...anyone that comes in to stop me feels the effects...unless they remembered to put their gas mask on...in which case i run away
The Gas Chamber (shudder) was the undoubtedly worst part of my basic training (Armor School, Ft. Knox, late 1983). The DIs brought 5 guys into the shack at a time, gave the "all clear" (the signal to take off your protective mask), and harassed each private a bit before letting them exit. I was the 5th out of 5 guys, and the DIs knew I was going Airborne after basic and AIT, so I got held in the CS a lot longer than just about everyone. I was probably only in there for a total of 5 minutes, but it seemed like 5 hours. Couldn't breathe, couldn't see, eyes and nose and throat burning like they'd been coated with lighter fluid and set alight, nose running like a faucet. It, in a word, sucked.
After my group had exited and had been sitting around recovering for a while, this black guy named Golden went into the latrines. A minute or so later, we all heard this bloodcurdling shriek and poor Golden came hauling ass out of the latrine, pants around his ankles, clutching his crotch and screaming "Don't piiiissss!! Doooonnnn't piiiiiiissssssss!!!!" He'd had the CS dust all over his hands when he went to take a leak, and that nasty stuff got onto his sensitive bits. He told me later that it felt like his johnson was being deepfried. It was hilarious at the time, but I felt sorry for the poor guy later.
I had another CS experience later in my tour, while stationed in Germany. A buddy named Mike (who had a huge Jamie Farr-caliber nose) and I were in a hard rock club in Nürnberg called The Green Goose. We were sitting in a booth on a Friday night, drinking beer and checking out the local pelt when suddenly Mike said "Oh hell, we've gotta get out of here now!" I asked why and he said "It's CS, man! Let's go!!!" I smelled nothing, but I trusted him (I was gun shy about CS) so we got out fast and just in time. Apparently somebody had stolen a CS grenade and popped it in the middle of the crowded club. Thanks to Mike's prodigious nasal capacity, we missed all but the most mild effects. But as we watched from the street, scores of panicked people came trampling up the stairs screaming and crying, choking and hacking, snot running from their noses like water, retching and puking all over the place. From our vantage point, it was pretty damned funny. From theirs, it was probably a small taste of hell.[/I]
Ah, that brings back memories. We were stationed at Ft. Sill, Oklahoma, going through our gas chamber training. One of the things they told us QUITE clearly was not to use the water from our canteens or the portable tank (which we called the water buffalo) to try and rinse it off, as it will only seep into our pores and cause excrutiating pain. Of course we also had one person in our platoon who thought he didnt need to follow such dumb instructions. We had just gotten out of the chamber, and the effects were starting to wear off, and just to prove everything was all right now they had us eat our midday chow. Well Private Dumbass apparently thinks to himself that it's gone now and that he might as well douse himself in a little water to cool off. 5 seconds later he's screaming and hollering all over the place, ended up going on sick call the next day with his neck the brightest shade of red I've ever seen, as if he got a pretty bad sunburn. Not sure if that was from the CS gas or from him scratching it.
just about every branch of the military exposes their troops to tear gas in basic training.

WtF? why would u hurt urself with teargas ? or let ur teammates hurt u with teargas IRL? cant see a reason, maybe to train for it well i dont see allot of guys using teargas and if u get it in ur eye thats sh!t for u so i dont find that a good reason maybe guys in the army can give me a reason?
I never use support so I never use teargas. But (in the game) you can function very well when you are under its influence. It does f*ck you up for a while but only for like 10 seconds.

In certain situations getting a little CS gas in your eye is the least of your worries.
There are certain things to do to minimize its effects. Rubbing your eyes for example will really mess you up. But your instincts tell you to rub your eyes...you are trained not to. If you don't follow instructions.......guess what.......after that experience you damn sure will. It also teaches you to function in less than ideal situations and to keep your cool.
see how quickly the guy in your example reacted to cs gas going off in the club. Quick enough to react and remove himself from the situation before succumbing to its effects. Training.
Also, the airbourne crystals (like fine dust on a windy day) lands in your hair.. so when you have a shower later it all runs back into your eyes!

I was also gassed in navy boot camp, yea it turns you into a snot factory unmatched by any flu. But the most memorable moment was the dust you mentioned. They warned us to wash up immediatly after we recovered but some poor soul really needed to crap. I guess he ended up wiping and grinding that stuff right up his... well you get the picture. I rarley ever see men cry like that.

It is to give you confidence in your anti-chemical attack equipment (gassmask etc.). When they drop the gass you are all wearing a gassmask and breathing fine, then you unmask and are subjected to the gas.

As SeaDog said, it's mostly confidence training. It's to show you that your mask really works. Like I said too, it also showed me that BDUs do a fairly good job at keeping particulate matter off your skin.
But also, it's shock training. If in the field you get hit with tear gas, if you havent experienced it before, you will undergo a moderate degree of shock by being hit with an unknown substance. A good portion of the people who went through the gas chamber freaked out, fell on the ground, and said "I'm going to die!" only to find out later that it wasnt that bad. Heck, my first time through I thought my skin was on fire and that I was going to have a heart attack. Second time through having known what to expect, it was more like a moderate sunburn and breathing in a little chili powder. Painful, but I kept a clear head through it and just waited patiently for my turn to walk out that door.
I think the flashbang is more effective than the tear gas. Atleast, I can escape from the teargas with distored vision. However, flash bang just blind me.
ya but i always end up flash banging myself too and then i fall off a ledge or some thing:p
But yeah, you should check the SF forums.
BTW, you cannot unlock it. It's for SF maps only (like grappling hooks and zip lines) because it has the potential to break game balance in standard BF2.
the flashbang has unbalanced BF2 now as well as the f2000 and the f2000 GL, i get killed by that more than anything now...
