    Re: Holding Actions

I had some good fun defending on Sharqi yesterday on Tacticalgamer.com, we had a squad there almost the entire game after we capped the city entrance, survalence(sp?) post. We faught up waves of enemy squads.. its quite exciting to see the uav drop down half a block away and see nothing but red moving in your direction.

Nothing like firing co-ordinated noob toob arty on an attacking squad :p

But like said before, towards the end, we had a squad covering one of our flanks, and any attack was just mopped up with relative ease, none of the enemy's even making it to the flag. They gave up and shifted their attack towards the north.

        Re: Holding Actions

They should make the defend flag radius larger....ie...if you kill an enemy on the stairwell on sharqi, you get a defend point.

You know thats not such a bad idea, they should extend the flag defend radius to at least 3/4 times the actual flag radius, maybe even further than that, meaning defenders get a crap load of points for killing enemy's close to the flag. Since if you are good at defending you wont even let your enemy get within the cap radius.

            Re: Holding Actions

I used to defend flags until I got arty'd three times in a row without even seeing an enemy. That sucked. Hard.

After that day I realized defense was pointless. If you were good enough, you'd just roll the other team or box them in at a UCB. Plus, since you're always on the move, you don't need to worry about arty as much.

Not to mention that it's so easy to roll over defense. Artillery. Grenades. m203s. Bunnyhopping. So many powerful offensive moves to so few defensive ones. If they boosted mounted MGs and removed artillery, I'd defend.

Defence is far from useless, fallow the topic starters suggestions, some common sense and tactics and you will survive the biggest onslaught. Teamwork is key.

Good thought. I like the idea of making it bi-directional too. If YOU are near the flag when you make a kill, you should get a bonus point for defence too.

This would help eliminate the problem of people waiting for attackers to get within capping distance before trying to take 'em out (which I've see).

                Who's fault is that?
Sounds like you weren't taking very good positions or listening for incoming. I'm actually thankful for enemy artillery now that I've got more defencive work under my belt. It keeps things interesting/exciting. Nothing like hearing that incomng sound, realizing your caught in the open, and have to make a mad dash for cover.

Defenders always have an advantage. You just need to know how to use it best. Since you're dug in and know roughly where to expect attack from, all you have to do is cover those attack routes. It's standard millitary doctoren that for ever man on defence, they should be able to face as many as 10 attackers!
The grenade launcher works just as well (if not better) on defence as it does on offence. I love using it as a mini-mortor to bust up advancing lines.

Grantd, defence isn't easy. I'd say is more difficult to play defence than it is to be on the attack... but that's prolly what is attracting me to it. I love a challange.

                  Oh... extra little note;
As I mentioned in another thread, it turns out that you can repair supply crates and keep 'em around forever. This is a BIG help for defence. Hehe... you can even move the things around if your careful. Hop in a keep and give 'em a push. Get that crate under cover where it will survive artillery strikes!

While I'm sure you can win with a defensive strategy, a good offense will always win over a good defense. Their assualts, at Wargimp's HQ couldn't have been that great or they would've beaten them eh?

                      Nu uh.
There were some damned good assualts coming in. Our defence just happened to be better. Remember, by the end it came down to their WHOLE FIRCKEN TEAM trying to take us out!

Remember, being on defence is a HUGE tactical advantage. You get to hide while they have to move. You can observe their movements while they have to try to be sneaky. You respawn at the hotzone while they have to travel all the way back each time they get wiped out.

Historicly speaking, there's been more than a few examples of a strong defence being victorious over a stonge offence. Operation Market Garden, The Russian Front, and even old Roman tactics all showed that while a strong offence makes for a good defence, a strong defence can turn a battle.

                        Sounds like an awesome battle!:)
But your historical references?, yes those who won were in defense, but they won because they counter-attacked, the most vital part of a defense, the ability to counter-attack, not just sit there behind your nice, high walls.
But thats part of a defense! So yea, it would be cool if the game incorporated some kind of bonus for defending or attacking armies. Something random, like, your troops were kept up all night by loud ducks, you can't sprint very far or something.
This whole random armies running at each other in an abandoned town is a bit sily

                              Re: Holding Actions

For Sharqi I'm shure it's possible to hold out in the main base until the end of
the round as US. Atleast on public. The same with Karkand for MEC. For a
map like Mashtuur though it is critical to secure the Powerplant in the
beginning of the round and defend it with Vodniks. The tank spawns there
(32 map) and if the US get their hands on it the round can be over pretty
quickly. If you have friends playing with you it's best to divide and take one
Vodnik from the gas station and one from the hotel. If you stay at the hotel
to defend the flag you will get slaughtered by the Blackhawk.

On Daqin my favourite flag to defend is the middle by the oil cisterns. You
have cover from artillery attacks and you have AA. If you take the Blackhawk
and fly there in the beginning of the round you are almost guaranteed to get
there first. Same with the chinese chopper.

On Cleansweep the small airstrip is an important base if you want to keep
your pilot with ammo as well as the communication center where the chopper
                              spawns.

Mines are pretty useless in their current state since a tanker can simply
shoot them away. If you put them in a position where he can't hit them he
can simply jump out and toss a nade. Hopefully this will get fixed in the next
patch so that only engies can remove them.

Even if your not in a clan I'm shure Advanced Tactical Center
(http://www.foolishentertainment.com) can be helpful. Here you can view
all the BF2 maps from a birdseye view and you might discover routes and
tactics you haven't thought of before.

The defense can win in the game because even if the offense controls the whole map except for one flag they can lose on points by suffering disproportionate casualties. Someone posted about a similar situation several months ago; if the offense had stopped attacking that last flag and just held what they had they would have won.
