Re: Hovering helicopters with gunners are just too effective

Im usually heli pilot at Mashtuur city. Have you any idea how hard is this to pull off? First you need good gunners. The ones who know what to attack first (for example i shoot vodniks first then infantry). Second you need some engies who repair heli. Blackhawk is too easy to down. Take AT rocket of PKM. Any jeep is Blackhawks worst nightmare. If I spot it, I must move so my gunner see it, if my gunner is dumbass, we all die.

Re: Hovering helicopters with gunners are just too effective

I was having a hard time on the Dragon Valley last night on the US team. It was a 64 player map but with only about 20-30 playing so it was pretty open and it seemed like most of the action was in the air. That suited me as I could run around capping and there is not too much a jet can do about it.

Enemy attack choppers are a pain on low population maps becasue they carry so much fire power and there are not many people shooting back but I find if you spot them them then the US jet jocks usually make short work of them. Problem last night was that the US fighter pilots couldn't hit the side of a barn at 20 paces. I mean I don't fly often but when I do I use a flight controller and I can shoot helicopters down, it's easy, they are slow and can't dodge the missles or your guns!!!

The helicopters more than anything else i think emphasis the team nature of this game. Don;t play as a team and you will get owned!! Play as a team and you can stop anything, jets, choppers or tanks...

My squad and I did this on Wake the other night -- we were getting nailed by the blackhawk and everyone respawned at different flags and manned the transports in that area. So when the blackhawk pulled back to the carrier to repair, no matter where he flew, there was someone with a heavy maching gun lighting into him.

Also, target the blackhawks where they can't see you. A couple heavy machine guns on Wake's island points and you can bring down the appraching choppers and their gunners can't even get a shot at you. Also, hitting them from behind or underneath works well too.

Re: Hovering helicopters with gunners are just too effective

Oh man, how is this even a thread?

Taking down a blackhawk is easy, gunners or not.

          1) AT Missle.. Like a few have said before, one is usually enough to scare them off.. if not, then take cover and fire another.

          2) AA emplacement.. just run for it when they're not looking.

          3) (My favorite) get to a jeep, park it out of sight, but close enough to hit with the .50 cal turret. Aim for the cockpit. Even if you don't hit a pilot, it will damage the chopper at a surprisingly good rate, and 9 times out of 10 they'll start smoking and leave the area rather than even try to find you. This even works on an unsuspecting attack chopper.. especially if they miss you on the first strafing run.

          4) This is obvious.. but AIRPLANES. If you have any good pilots in the air, they'll probably be attacking the chopper anyway. If not, either let them know, or hop in a plane and do it yourself.

I realize that not all of these options are available all the time, but there are so many different choices that this should never be THAT big of a problem.

Seriously, I think the biggest problem in BF2 is guns. I get killed almost every time by guns, and there's no way to stop from getting killed sometimes!!1 You'll spawn and someone shoots you with a gun, you run in the road and someone shoots you with a gun. I think we need to take guns out of the game, because they kill you way too easily when no one shoots back.

Spawn camping could be fixed if they either parachuted players onto the map or spawned the players in a protected shelter with turret defenses. A far-fetched idea, but I'm just churning them out.

It wouldn't be too hard to make it a sufficiently sized area. The other option to be smarter about placing static spawn points, putting them behind substantial cover or inside buildings.

Of course, you could do both! Place 3-4 static spawn points, and then place players randomly in a small radius around it.

There's your answer. If these stupid pilots (you can tell i don't fly ) would spend less time chasing each others tail and actually do what they were intended to do which is support the troops, then the choppers would not run all over the troops.

If a chopper stops to hover, then a fighter should waste it right away. Too many time in Wake the fighters stay miles away from the fight just playing tag with each other.

On another note about AT rockets and Helis, it would be cool if Helis had damage points on the model that would cause different things to happen depending on where it go hit. I'm picturing a Heli hovering over a flag when suddenly you pop out of the woods and nail the heli in the rotor with a AT rocket. Now watch with joy as the chpper begins to spin out of control...that would make my day

In the defense of pilots: have you ever gotten into a tangle? You say you don't fly, so I'll assume no. Dogfights, I would say, are THE hardest aspect of the game in BF2 (besides surving as infantry against good pilots :) ), especially when it's the F-35 vs the J-10 because of how ridiculously superior the J-10 is. If you pull off mid-dogfight, you think that the other pilot will not care? No! It's gonna come RIGHT back after you and proceed to stomp your guts out unless you kill it the first time.

Good pilots can multi-task and worry about both aspects of combat at once.

Your right, i commend those who attempt to help while the other fighters are chasing em, and dump on those who only want to fly so they can have a **** swinging contest with the other fighter pilot.

And yeah, the jets were the only ones killing it. My underlying point is that no amount of skill could avoid getting killed by it.
I admit it's a problem if you have only 1 flag left to spawn (but then you're screwed anyways).

Otherwise.. don't spawn at the flag that the helo's at. Spawn at the flag that has a free humvee near it or go get one somewhere. then drive to a place that's not too near the helo. Then just let the helo have the .50 cal shower of it's life.

U have shot the health bar half of the way down before they even notice someone is shooting, coz theres no lock-on alerts.

2 well located humvees is almost an impossible obstacle for a helo. They might shoot the other humvee to smitherines but by that time the other one has already hammered it to critical condition.

Re: Hovering helicopters with gunners are just too effective

I don't have much time so let me touch on some things:

-The n00b tube does work great against black hawks for some reason, but I haven't used it in a while and never tried it against attack helos

-Getting owned by teamwork is not always your fault. For example if a 2 man squad is working toghether (one is spawn killing and the other is giving him ammo), is that the fault of the person getting spawn killed?
-It was a small game, so it was hard to get a big mob of AT guys set up to destory the heli.
-By hovering I didn't necessarily mean perfectly still, occasionally it would circle strafe around the base.
-To be a good feature in the game requires two components. It must take some kind of skill and be countered with some kind of skill. For example, if someone tries to AT snipe you, it requires them to aim in order to hit you (skill), but you can also dodge the projectile (skill). Helis take skill, however, it is simply too mobile and too fast to counter with skill on a map like Wake (atleast on Sharqi you have the TV station to hide in). With a sniper, it is easy to run to some kind of cover, but the heli can simply go around that cover...much faster than you can run. This isn't the case with things like jeeps and tanks, as I have a had some hilariously long games of cat and mouse with them.
