If I did, I'd make a thread about that, too, but there already are threads about it.
I (like most of the other posters apparently did) assumed that you were talking about going prone AND bunny-hopping, since that's the only time proning bothers me.

I've NEVER seen or heard ANYONE complain about someone going prone and nailing them. On the contrary, I and most others I've seen will usually give them a "nice shot man", cuz they beat us to the punch.

I totally agree that simply going prone to nail the enemy just makes good sense.

If you are getting cut down by a guy who is jumping and going prone, you are most likely fighting alone. At this point we should all know that we survive and fight better in groups. If you do this, you can cut down the guy before he can even get within effective range.

      Potamus:

I'm not going to argue with you. I posted this thread because -a- there are new players that will complain about this (meaning they didn't know about it) and -b- even for those of us who do know about it, we either forget or still try to rationalize.

Welcome to an arcade-like computer game. If you would like the real thing, I hear the Army is at an all-time low at recruitment and we have a lot of "openings" in Iraq.

A grenade or C4 makes for a quick remedy. Last I checked, no amount of jumping or diving will help you unless it's off the side of a bridge or building.

I didn't read the replies, but in response to this:
In 1 on 1 encounters, I almost always go prone. If the other guy goes prone, I kill him 7/10 times. If he stays up and moving, he usually kills me.

It doesn't matter what tactics/cheats/whatever you use, there's going to be someone it works against and someone that it works for. Dice used the term "rock/paper/scissors" when refering to the balance in this game, which I think is a brilliant analogy.

I don't know what any of this has to do with anything, I'm just in the mood to hear myself talk (or see myself type, whatever).

Re: Diving prone: it's a legit action

The problem people have with this is that it would be extremely easy for DICE to just code that you CAN'T shoot when your feet aren't touching the ground.

It's people nailing you while they are in mid air that ****es people off!

Daulphin dives are fine, but you shouldn't be able to shoot before being prone.
Sometime you get kill while the guy is prone but still in mid air :wall:

Just a quick blurb about this technique: diving down in the prone position is a valid and widely used tactic by armed forces.

If you watch any modern documentary about infantry armed forces, especially those regarding open terrain combat, you will see squads and platoons moving in intervals and incorporating the prone position. Now for some definitions before people start getting confused.

Open Terrain Combat - not urban combat. This is open terrain where vehicles can roam about with little to no obstruction. This lack of obstructions also means lack of cover. If you have no cover, then you have to resort to something else to make you less of an open target, such as lying prone to reduce your cross-sectional area to the target.

Squads and Platoons - to save us all a headache, it's just a bunch of guys moving together on the same team.

Intervals - this is where a group plays leapfrog when moving to a site. One guy moves up a certain distance from the group, preferably with cover or lying prone, then plants and watches a specific direction. Once he is situated, the at the rear of the group moves up ahead of him and does the same thing. This continues until the whole group has leapfrogged to the site with full cover during travel. In BF2, the action is faster paced, but it's still a valid and smart tactic.

"So why the whole thread about it?"

We've seen a number of players complain both in boards and in-game about "so-and-so is a diving prick!" This is usually because the guy that dives prone first during a face-to-face fight survives. (And who knew that the one that stood straight up and spraying away would die first?)

In realistic combat, survival is your first priority. If you survive an attack, you get another chance to make sure the enemy doesn't survive the next one. So, if you reduce your profile (aka, cross-sectional area) you are a harder target to hit. If you have been owned by a dolphin-diving, prone-rolling noob, the fact is that you are actually the noob. I suggest practicing this tactic, whether advancing on targets, lurking about in terrain, or hiding from enemies on your tail. The only one who will see you easier from this is someone who can see from above--like the enemy commander. You can reduce his chances of seeing you if you also have cover above you, like a tree or roof.

From now on, if someone complains that some guy went prone and owned him, link that thread/post to this one.
You might think you are right by lecturing us about real life tactics and battlefield 2, but you are wrong (surprise). In real life people cant hit the deck as fast as they can in BF2, nor can they accurately fire like they can in BF2.

People, stay on track and don't read stuff into things that aren't there!

This thread isn't about Bunnyhoppers. It's about hitting the deck when you run into someone.

I've never seen this complained about. It seems like a natural thing to do. I don't always hit the deck, but I do most of the time.

That said, since the tread is already derailed:

                  I don't think that's a good solution. Why? Here's a quick story:

I was playing a round as an Engineer. I saw an enemy going for one of our flags. He ducked down behind some sandbags and I just knew there'd be grenades flying out of there in short order. So what did I do? I sprinted at the sandbag wall he was hiding behind, lept, went prone to get a slightly better angle of fire, and blasted the guy with my 12 guage while in mid air.

That was a hell of a rush to do and don't tell me it didn't require some skill to pull off. It was even a believable stunt, in an action movie sort of way. By your suggested rules, I wouldn't have been able to do it and thus would have been robbed of a very fun moment in the game.

No, I don't think that jump shooting should be removed. I think it should be limited. It's been suggeted time and time again that jumping should take some sprint energy. I think that's the "most perfect" solution.

                  Edit:

You might be suprised. Look at some combat footage sometime. Especially WWII stuff. Those guys hit the dirt in a hurry. Hell, even in the martial arts I studies, we were taught how to do breakfalls from 5 feet up so we could litterally throw ourselves at the ground if needed.

It would still have worked but there would have been a delay until you actualy touched ground.

The point is that it was hella fun 'n cool to blast him like that. It was enjoyable.
Besides, if I had to wait even that extra split second to land before I could unload, he prolly would have been able to take me out.

What's wrong with the sprint energy solution? Best of bother worlds... you can't jump and shoot, but you can't keep on jumping and shooting (which is the annoying part).

it hurts pretty bad ive done it in paintball

one kid left on the other team, i yell "Lets go Hunting" to my Teamates knowing that the last kid is a chicken and afraid of being hit. He blindshoots in my direction about 15 secs later, i dived on my stomach and it hurt like heck, like if uv'e been punched. Then he surrended, he ran out of paint or so he said but we suspected he dumped it all to give him a legimate reason to surrender.

Very well stated. The main problem I have with folks who play this game is that they don't play with that thought in mind. They apparently figure "I don't really care if I die running head-long into a battle, I'll just respawn and go somewhere else." This thought process baffles me. Me and my buds/clanmates play a style that resembles the tactics Saureco talked about. We don't just run to the nearest firefight/control point, we survey, stand back, use our resources, then take the most appropriate course of action. If that means just spotting and letting someone else who's better equipped (ie. - Tank, Chopper, etc) take out the baddies, then so be it. In other words, we play for the team, not as a bunch of selfish individuals.

                              You aren't trained.
As I mentioned before, even in my martial arts class we trained to be able to take dives at the floor from 5 feet. There's ways of making that kind of fall not hurt.

Hell, I once had to do it to the front of a moterbike that was about to run me down... but that's a whole story by itself.

Point is, if you knew how to do this, you could.

In BF2 you can fall from a second story rooftop, get hurt a bit, then sprint away (not possible) and people are crying foul about dropping prone from 5 feet (possible)?

                              Ummm... yeah...

lets see you do that with 60+ pounds of gear, a flakjacket, and your M16 out and then I will believe you. Its much easier when you are wearing lose clothes, but wear all that and then try it while firing and have the degree of accuracy that the players have in BF2.
