Diving prone: it's a legit action

(I already did a search on the forums for this topic, and I didn't see one)

Just a quick blurb about this technique: diving down in the prone position is a valid and widely used tactic by armed forces.

If you watch any modern documentary about infantry armed forces, especially those regarding open terrain combat, you will see squads and platoons moving in intervals and incorporating the prone position. Now for some definitions before people start getting confused.

Open Terrain Combat - not urban combat. This is open terrain where vehicles can roam about with little to no obstruction. This lack of obstructions also means lack of cover. If you have no cover, then you have to resort to something else to make you less of an open target, such as lying prone to reduce your cross-sectional area to the target.

Squads and Platoons - to save us all a headache, it's just a bunch of guys moving together on the same team.

Intervals - this is where a group plays leapfrog when moving to a site. One guy moves up a certain distance from the group, preferably with cover or lying prone, then plants and watches a specific direction. Once he is situated, the at the rear of the group moves up ahead of him and does the same thing. This continues until the whole group has leapfrogged to the site with full cover during travel. In BF2, the action is faster paced, but it's still a valid and smart tactic.

"So why the whole thread about it?"

We've seen a number of players complain both in boards and in-game about "so-and-so is a diving prick!" This is usually because the guy that dives prone first during a face-to-face fight survives. (And who knew that the one that stood straight up and spraying away would die first?)

In realistic combat, survival is your first priority. If you survive an attack, you get another chance to make sure the enemy doesn't survive the next one. So, if you reduce your profile (aka, cross-sectional area) you are a harder target to hit. If you have been owned by a dolphin-diving, prone-rolling noob, the fact is that you are actually the noob. I suggest practicing this tactic, whether advancing on targets, lurking about in terrain, or hiding from enemies on your tail. The only one who will see you easier from this is someone who can see from above--like the enemy commander. You can reduce his chances of seeing you if you also have cover above you, like a tree or roof.

From now on, if someone complains that some guy went prone and owned him, link that thread/post to this one.

but no jumping 10 feet in the air and going prone in mid air and landing on ur belly. that would hurt.

Seriously. Do you really want to argue about this? The dive in BF2 is so far afield from anything in real life, it's utterly silly to try and justify in-game nonsense with out-of-game data.

How do you account for remaining prone while jumping? Oh, you've studied the Amazing Prone Jumping People of Zambia. Of course.

I would really want to a video of soldiers jumping 3m in the air and lying down 30 times across a street while shooting at something at the other end.

yeah, hehe, i wonder how many bruises these guys have after doing all that diving - they really hit the floor hard.

But totally true Saureco, a very valid point there.

AMAZING. THIS THREAD MENTIONS NOTHING OF JUMPING OR BUNNYHOPPING, YET YOU DIVERT THE TOPIC WITHIN THE FIRST 2 POSTS TO SOMETHING YOU WANT TO CRY ABOUT. THIS IS ABOUT DIVING INTO THE PRONE POSITION.

(My apologies for the caps, but that's just in case some people can't read *cough*these guys*cough*)

Just stop posting people. You clearly have nothing to contribute here except psychobabble and self-inflated egos. Simply link this thread, psychbabble excluded, to posts that complain about diving prone. I don't care about bunnyhopping, team killing, camping, or anything else. If I did, I'd make a thread about that, too, but there already are threads about it.

OK. You want to stay on topic. Acceptable. Yet, how many soilders run sideways and drop into a roll while spraying on fully automatic and, manage to put around 6 or so rounds in the OpFor down range at 100m or so?

If you provide an account, video evidence, or just somthing. I'll agree that prone is valid in regards to the game and how it's implented. But, until then. It seems as if DICE didn't polish the prone system well enough.

so since we all understand that, are you just here to tell us about stuff we apparently already understand?

No one cares about people diving to prone to shoot, its the people who jump go to prone, jump go to prone which looks extremly unreallistic and stupid.

I'm not going to bother linking. Hence the "if you watch such-and-such kind of video" comment. It means "if you want to see it for yourself, go find it".

And I am staying on topic. It just irritates me, just as it would to anyone else, when a thread is hijacked within the first couple posts by people that find another person's thread an opportunity to spread their propaganda and pedantic whining.

If you are having trouble with people going prone and putting half a clip in you before the wind is even knocked out of their lungs, remember two things:

                              1. It's a horribly arcade-like game, not a realistic one. Realistic modelling of vehicles and weapons hardly accounts for realism.

                              2. The game can be modded, so just go join a team that modifies this play style to hinder or eliminate that aspect.
