    Structural Damage: Air Bases

Ok, granted I'm a relatively new player to the game. Yes, I don't have much experience in flying helos or fighter/bomber and have to resort to slugging it out on the ground with the rest of the 'noobs' doing what we do. However, it would be nice if there was some way to either slow down the impact you talented pilots have on the game.

I don't have anything against the use of planes/helos, and I'm fine with the alarming stats that some of you aces can acheive, but honestly, a flyby over an airstrip is not really the same as landing, refueling, rearming, repairing and then taking off again. What I'd like to see incorporated (and you all can/will chime in with your opinions, I hope) is that some type of physical damage that ground forces could muster over airstrips and helo pads. A plan is not going to be very able to land if the landing strip is pitted with holes and broken tarmac.

Using C4 or artillery (vehicle mines, etc) to spike these formations would be one way to possibly counter the veraciousness and untouchableness your airial combatants have. It would force each side to protect their airbases better, keeping engineers at the ready to repair and/or defend. In short, it would grant the ground forces a means of slowing down the air forces and force each side to incorporate more teamwork in their strategies.

Just a thought, I await the anti-noob flaming...

You know, i think thats a good idea. Make the runways and heli pads destructible. That would make flying a little bit more challenging and it would give the repair class more objects to repair. It would also make heli pilots beg repair classes to repair the pad or repair them directly. My only other change if this was to happen would be to allow the repair class the ability to re-arm the heli when they use the wrench. May not be realistic but would be fair. Like the suggestion

      Re: Structural Damage: Air Bases

Know what's funny? When I fly the bombers with my clan mates, I actually make an effort to land the jet and turn it around for take off again. Yes, this slows down the gameplay considerably for us, but damn does it show talent and a drive for fairness and immersion. The trick is to line up about a mile off the end of the strip, let off the trottle so you coast in, then start deceleration while trying to maintain 0 to +10 degrees on the horizon. When done properly, you touch down and everyone at the base is like "OMG, WTF?! Why didn't you blow up?!?!?"

You are correct that the fly over technique has really contributed to the "arcadey-ness" and invulnerability factor of jet pilots. I'm quite sure that a required landing process to refit, repair, and maybe even refuel would drastically reduce the jet whore threads, jet-camper threads, and overall jet flying stats for most players. I hope the PRMM mod guys implement this in a future update. *hint hint wink wink*

When I first read that we'd be able to drop durandels, I thought the runways were destructible. After all, isn't that what a durandel is for ? Destroying runways and road ways?

Anyway. I agree. However, to repair a jet quickly you have to land. Other than that you (or at least I do) have to do several passes to fully repair.

I agree...landings are half the fun in any flight sim...especially on a carrier.

Where's my ILS...screw it...the carrier is right there!

There could be an autoland sequence that you trigger when close to a heli pad or runway. This would sux for those who like to use their skills to land but would be a consistant way to make a minute or two go by in the repairing/arming process.

Although, it'd be kinda funny to consider that the Support kit is replenishing Hydra rockets on the helo, all from the little knap sack ammo bag. :P I think Scooby Do had the same thing behind his back. Where else would he whip out hoagies and rollerskates?

no but turing the jet around sure isn't easy.

Sure it is. It's called an APC to the broadside of the jet's nose.

                    Re: Structural Damage: Air Bases

Why not land facing the right way for takeoff? Oooh - is that too complicated? lol When I need major repairs that is what I do.

I like this idea though. My only concern about this idea is spawn campers would increase a bunch.

It would be more realistic to have the planes able to drop bombs on the roads /runways to blow them up. I would think it would be pretty damn cool. Add an awesome element to the game IMHO.

You forget that there's a huge hangar blocking a smoothe landing. But try it anyway. Let us know how it went after your respawn. :)

What an excellent idea, i think it would work very well.

BUT - What if the plane flyer is an engineer? all it takes is a flyby over the airfield to fix it and then another to rearm..

Hmm... good point. Have them (EA) code it so that you need a minimum of two Engineers to repair runways and helipads? I thought that only the passenger could fix and that the driver could not repair/heal/rearm as he drove... I may be wrong, but I thought that is what I've read.

There gotta be a breaking point right??!! I mean right now these campers wait anywhere from 1-4 minutes for a plane to appear. If they implemented a landing condition in the game then that wait time would jump way up. You would think a camper could only take sooo much waiting before they give up to actually play the game. Implementing this idea might reduce the amount of campers. But then again, who would we run over

I don't have fraps or I would put up a video.

It is not hard to do at all. I do it all the time - same with flying in over the other planes on the carrier.

The bombers take especially long to turn around and back up - this is why I fly in and land facing the direction you need to take off.
