Awesome post, and very funny. I love the commentary you gave the pictures with. It helped ease the pain of the beating I (and the Marines) had on a couple of maps last night. *Darn* MEC wouldn't let us off the *darn* boat!

Ah yes, this Hovercraft WAS going to be in the game, transporting vehicles and such, but they removed it...

Probably because of the small size of the dock (no vehicles and stuff), and limited use of the craft, and it's sheer size.

i'd like to see why they removed it and how it works in game - maybe the physics collision engine clashed with it or something.

An interesting read. Although in that first picture...where's the rear Phalanx? Not to mention the black masts look cooler. :p All in all a pretty good ingame representation of the ship. Too bad we at least didn't get the below decks areas and the LCAC to go with it. There's no reason the LCAC wouldn't have worked with this, as they could have extended the below decks area to simply allow for some vehicle spawns to load into the LCAC, but alas EA is all about screwing us. =/ A nice find though, spiffy lil ship indeed. :)

sry but what are you talking about...that ship isnt amphibious...Amphibious means that they can swin in water and drive on land...and a carrier cant do this

You may want to check the Navy Fact File on this before you bash the right person...They are called Amphibious Assault Ships because they support Amphibious Assaults...duh...hence the VOTL aircraft and the LCACs etc. etc....

no, phalanx is right. They are used to shoot down cruise missiles. The gun itself is a vulcan gun, but the whole system, gun & radar control, is called CWIS or phalanx.

there was also an "essex" class carrier, the favorite of mine, the intrepid CV-11, decommissioned in March 1974, she was a bicentennial exhibition ship at philadelphia, pennsylvania, in 1976. uss intrepid was stricken from the naval vessel register in february 1982 and transferred to a new york city organization for further service as a museum, a role she plays to the present day.

Many of the ships were extensively modified in later years, with many boasting a reinforced angle flight deck and a mirror landing system to accomodate jet aircraft as a result of Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization (FRAM) upgrades. The conversions included a hurricane bow and the installation of an angled flight deck which permits the simultaneous launching and recovery of aircraft.

The USS Essex (CV 9) was placed out of commission in reserve on 09 January 1947. The first of the World War II carriers to do so, she then underwent modernization which gave her a new flight deck, and a streamlined island superstructure. On 04 June 1947 the CNO approved Project 27A by which Essex-class carriers were modernized to be able to handle aircraft to 40,000 pounds and included the installation of two H-8 catapults, strengthening the flight deck and clearing it of guns, increasing elevator capacity and adding special provisions for jet aircraft such as blast deflectors. USS Oriskany (CV 34), the first of nine carriers modernized under this project, began conversion at the New York Naval Shipyard on 01 October 1947. USS Essex (CV 9) was recommissioned 16 January 1951, and on 23 August 1951 she went into combat in Korea, the first carrier to launch F2H Banshee twinjet fighters on combat missions.

Yes all is true but the current USS Essex that we are talking about and that is found in BF2 is NOT an Aircraft Carrier, but an Amphibious Assault Ship in the WASP class...

There is also the LHA class and the Tarawa class....

The wasp class has a 20mm Phalanx CWIS mounts, (4) 50 cals, (4) 25mm Mk38s, (2) RAM launchers, and (2) Sea Sparrow launchers...if the BF2 version had all this we wouldnt have to worry about enemy planes or choppers....

Haha, that's interesting. I always thought the huge '2' on the in-game Essex was just a reference to it being Battlefield '2'.

Phalanx is radar guided and will not stop shooting until the target no longer remains and was originally designed as a Anti-missle weapon. If you have ever seen one of these fire in real life it is friggin amazing to see. I just wish they were 1/2 as good in the game as they are in RL.
