anyway, i really apreciate this info... i was really surprised by the almost exactitude of the replica of the BF2 US ESSEX. din't though of it :p

Ah yes, this Hovercraft WAS going to be in the game, transporting vehicles and such, but they removed it...

Or they made such easy targets. Hell we can't even get to shore using the rubber rafts which are tiny compaired to the hovercraft.

I saw one of her relatives, the Saipan(Which is a Tarawa-class LHA and is a few decades older, than the Essex) in Portsmouth in june... She was huge, almost as big as the Charles De Gaulle...

yes, the 2 on the USS Essex was after the LHD2 Designation.

I also was amazed how close they did it to the real thing - i was even more amazed that the ship even existed, so i thought it might make an interesting read for you BF2 Boffins.

Yes, it is an Amphibious Assualt Ship (I wondered why, thanks for clearing it up SuperDonkey.

And it is also true that the RIBs make seemingly huge targets, i dont want to know about the LCAC being a massive target.

The Essex (CV-9) was the first ship of the Essex class of which there were 10 ships. None of which were lost in combat (that I could find).

Awarded - Means when the contract to build the ship was awarded to a shipyard
Keel Laid - Laying the keel is considered the first thing you do when building a ship. This date is when the construction officially started on the ship.
Launched - This is when the ship was first launched into the water. Before it can enter active service (commissioned) it must be fitted out with all sorts of things like catapults, elevators, bathrooms, etc. As well as going through it's sea trials to make sure everything works the way it should.
Commissioned - This is when the ship officially enters service with the navy

I learned something from that whole article:

BF2 players don't know the difference between an Aircraft Carrier and an LHD

The Essex doesn't have the right loadout in terms of vehicles (granted though in a couple years it is possible the JSF would be on it)

It is too small in BF2, or at the very least it seems that way, probably because the player height in BF2 is 2 meters, which is like 6 feet 6 inches tall...

Is it me or do I see 2 CWISs on the back of the ship? The missle battery is in the middle with a phalanx mounted on either side. Now that would be interesting if put into the game... >8)

Really nice info...a friend of mine's Dad served on this for a while...he had pics of it...i am trying to get him to scan them and send em in so I can post also.
