I take it that you're one of the pilots. As a sniper, I find killing someone sprinting across the screen with a perfect headshot to require some skill.

        I snipe religiously.

I don't think there's anything skillfull about it. All you need to do is get used to the feel of the gun and you're all set. Do you account for wind/velocity/etc? All you do is point in click.. lol.. figuring out where to point and click is not that hard buddy.

I do, however, think movement is not as easy. But seeing as BF2 does not reward people who move carefully we can just forget that.

Oh, and unless you can work that shot 4 times in a row, it isn't considered skill by the textbook definition. It's better referred to as luck, not skill.

IMHO, one can only claim skill if....

          1) can land a head shot on moving targets on a consistent basis....and no...enemies moving towards or away from the sniper don't count.

          2) can fly any helo with ease...and that means avoiding missiles and killing targets and being able to put a helo in a hover at will.

          3) Use a 203 at range effectively.

          4) nail a helo with a tank shell....consistently.

          5) able to do a combination of the above....

          So I guess...it's pretty open...if you can do anything consistently...you have skill....getting killed is a skill too...if you're wondering.

I'd like to add: I meant doing such shots repeatedly. Anyone can get lucky. Anyway, a big part of BF2 consists of pointing and clicking, so don't bash that. :)

Even better: nail a passing jet with a tank shell...now and then. I haven't.

Well, that's the point. Pointing & clicking isn't hard and there is nothing skilfull about it.

Don't you remember when you played sports as a little kid? Remember how everyone complain when something happened. You were either cheating, playing unfair, or just "can't do that". It's the same thing in BF2.

It seems that playing BF2 temporarily knocks people back a couple decades.

Forget individual component skills: there's a shortage of players with high situational awareness. This accounts for most of the skill, as those with a better understanding/appreciation of their surroundings can make better choices than those with a narrower view of the battlefield. A little simplistic, but you get the idea.

For me I think it's the Kalashnikov's serie. At long range it's very hard to hit a target but once you got the trick of it you can snipe whit those babies. Personnaly I love the chinese AK47. Most of the guns are easy to aim. Especially the US ones.(err..err ) But the AK's are stronger and much more notorious when you know how to use them.

                    Yeah I'm a AK lovah....

I was going to defend pointing and clicking a bit further, along the lines of it requiring good reactions, hand-eye coordination and so on, but I can see that you have a point.

Anyway, when I was a kid and played sports, I mostly counted on outrunning the others. That doesn't work in BF2.

Edit2: The personal opinionated conclusion, from what I've read here is that nothing in a video takes true skill to do. "Skill" is yet another cop-out used by people who do not like the way this game was made and blame the first person they possibly can -- the fellow gamer.
If you already know the answer, why ask the question?

First off, being accused of being a whore or using the n00b tube doesn't mean you don't have skill. If you're called a **** whore (where **** can be a tank, jet, golf car, etc.), then you it's likely you do have skill. You just also are using a weapon that can easily get you points when mastered, and thus, are called a whore. You can be skilled at the n00b tube if you, say, are able to snipe someone across the map with it. That's realy hard to do but the weapon is still called the n00b tube because it's traditional use results in easy kills for its user.

Skill is easy to define in a game like BF2. Basically, if a lot of people can't do said activity because it's difficult to do but you can, then you are skilled at said activity. If an activity is easy and/or a lot of people can or are doing said activity that you are doing, then that activity doesn't make you skilled. It's that simple. For example, the n00b tube used in the traditional sense can kill someone in one shot fairly easily. So easy that most beginners of the game use it a lot to great effect. Knifing someone, even if it is a one shot kill, does require skill because it's very difficult to get in a knife's effective range.

Ultimately, those who say others don't have skill usually mean the activity that person is engaging in is not difficult or rare to find among players. There's nothing wrong with that. Only the dumbest soldiers will find the hardest means to achieve their objective. However, it doesn't mean you then have immense bragging rights for being able to do what most anybody else is capable of doing, either.

                          Re: So, what takes "skill"?

I think the action(s) that takes skill are

                          1) NOT DYING
1a) knowing when to run for health instead of fighting
                          1b) hiding/acknowledge when you outguned
1c) killing a sqaud of ppl by your self, using your primary weapon first, pistol second, and knife third

                          2) sucessfully defending a flag as a troop against a sqaud

                          3) taking advantage of a distracted tank/apc (with c4)

I just think that the easist thing to do is die, therefore the hardest objective to accomplish is surviving which would require the most skill

I'd say there could be skill in bunny hopping. I mean, there are bad bunny hoppers and there are those who can practically do marix moves with their character. I just think it looks stupid, can potentially exploint weaker systems and servers, and is entirely unrealistic. Watching bunny hoppers reminds me of Super Mario Brothers. If your system doesn't have a good FPS, your connection is slow, or the server isn't too good about moving hit boxes, then the opponent of the bunny hopper is simply screwed. As for realism, you could claim it's just an arcade game, but this arcade game tries to create some realism in the game to make it fun.
