How do you people with low spec PCs cope with BF2 high sys req?

I'm running 2.4Ghz, 512MB of RAM, FX 5500 256mb graphics card. On every server, I get at least a 200 ping. There's only 2 ranked servers in Singapore, and its normally full on peak hours.

Here's some examples of what I go through in game:

I was waiting someone to walk around a corner, weapon poised, crouchedand crosshair on the estimated body of the enemy. I had the element of surprise. He appeared and I suddenly lagged. My crosshair suddenly "teleported" to the left and right. I shot a few rounds and I'm dead.

Another problem is flying an aircraft with lag.

Here I am, flying a jet perpendicular to the ground, happily cruising around. The next second, my graphics stalled for a sec and a message saying "There is something wrong with your connection" and when the lag recovers, I'm already on course for inevitable crash to the mountains.

Same thing goes with helicopters. Same message appeared and the next second my heli was upside down, rotor facing the ground. Oh well, kaboom.

No money for a good microphone for establishing teamwork. Can't fly and type at the same time.

No money for joystick, which is a plus to flying jets rather than mouse + keyboard combo, or pure keyboard.

With a crap spec PC, your reaction time is ALWAYS slower than the enemy.

Well, I'm saddled with a P4 1.8, 512 RD-RAM, with a GF 5700 LE.

I'm frankly amazed I can compete at all in this game!

It actually runs rather well with all the settings set to low. It's not too ugly either. I average about 80 to 120 ping on local servers.

My main issue is this damned RAMBUS RAM crap. I really got boned there! Expensive as hell, hard to get, and a pain to upgrade.

I'm saving up for a new comp, but in the meantime Optimizations are my friend!

Its not a computer problem, it sounds like a internet problem, I play on laptop with worse specs that your comp. 1.7ghz 1024mb ram 128mb graphics. I have to play with everything set to low but it's ok I can still win maps.

Oops. Forgot to give you some advice!

First off, I would be more worried about your RAM than your video card ATM.
BF2 takes up a LOT of RAM. 512 isn't nearly enough. It's also cheaper to upgrade your RAM than your video card.

In the mean time, there are some steps you can take.
First off, run a spyware checker. I recomend Ad-aware or Spybot search and destroy.

Next, try to make sure you have a minimum of back ground stuff running. Hit ctrl-alt-delete and sort the prosseses list by User. You should be able to close down almost everything in there without any problems. Leave explorer and wscntfy alone and if you've got any special mouse software, leave it too. Close every thing else.

Finally, make sure you aren't being ambitous with your game settings. Preformance > pertyness, yeah? Even simple things like change the voice overs to english only helps cut down on RAM use.

Oh... you should be able to pick up a joystick or mic for less than $20. Even cheap ones are usually fine.

1.5 GB of ram for any video settings above medium across the board. Make sure dynamic lights and shadows are off. Run DXDiag and check to make sure you AGP texture accelerations are on. All osrts of things you can do to make sure your system is the best it can be.

i think my motherboard has only 2 ram slots and its slotted with 2 256mb rams.. i can get a decent gfx card with the money to get 2 512mb rams if i add more dollars.

Ping and FPS are totally two different things. Ping is the response time of your client from the server in the measurement of ms. if you are experiencing high pings, get a new internet or stop dl'ing pr0n. FPS, frames per second, is how many frames showed each second during your gameplay (or could be any other moving pictures such as movies). if you are encountering low FPS, upgrade some parts of your computer or get a new one.

mine is a P4 3.06GG (128MB 5200 Nvidia Card ) and my ping is around 80 to 100...doing well though..

my only recent problem is I got a creative SB card LIVE but it's not working properly with the game

my ping is alright when i go to local ranked servers (only 2 local ranked for me afaik. yes thats sad.)

you can have 10 ping on a PII or PIII machine and you still cant play the game due to 10 FPS.

that's my point. cuz alot of ppl are asking how they can upgrade their computers to get good pings. the thing is u cannot get good pings by upgrading ur computer, u can only get a better internet to solve the problem.

with the 2 ranked local servers that i have (a pathetic 2) and regional servers helped with the ping issues. but the main problem is the graphics problem.
