There has always been a WW1 kind of mentality on Karkand regardless. Enter the meat grinder... I've even seen wave after wave of people charging down the same street, never attempting to flank and even leaving vehicles untouched back at the US base. But who has less skill, the guys launching the grenades or the one trying to rush them with a rifle?
The guy with the rifle has more skill if he can take down the nade launcher. What you're talking about is the desire to win...not skill. I have a greater desire to play a fair game than to just win by any means necessary.
Skill @ this game would be the ability to play skillfully in all of it's kits based on what's needed to get the job done.
That you are a player of impact and your presence on a team is a reason why it wins or almost wins.
It is not being simply a bad ass fighter jock or sniper, etc.. someone with skill usually ends a game showing 4-6 kits played. someone who jumps in where and how it's needed fighting up close and personal or all the way from chopper pad to chopper pad on Sharqi with a TV missile.
The players who have 1 or 2 abilities in this game are far from skilled at the 'game' [typically asking if you'll surrender your plane and let 'them' fly 'cause it's all they know how to do.] These are 1-hit wonders with one dimension and little to add as the maps rotate.
Oh c'mon, I made ONE minor misread out of ALL your posts in this thread. There's no need to get riled up about it. You obviously haven't had arguments with the kind of people I have before or you'd really know when someone isn't reading what you wrote (or purposley misquoting you).
Actually people misread my posts all the time.

So if someone can get a great kill death ratio without cheating, they must be skilled, because, unless people are constantly getting revived, those kills need to come from someone else's death. Unless of course they are getting killed for something they have no control over (luck). Do you agree with that?
It depends on how the kills are made, like you hinted at. I've played a lot of games where a tank rolls into a spawn area and just wipes the floor with everyone spawning there. Literally... player spawns, tank turns/fires/kills, repeat. The only ability being exercised by the tanker is the ability to aim an accurate gun and push a mouse button to fire it, which most everyone can do.
Now, we both know that the people who are spawning are probably not very smart, but that doesn't necessarily make the tanker any better of a player.
What about someone who blindly throws grenades, along with everyone else, at the beginning of Karkand? A player may throw his grenade, but an enemy may not be present to die from it. Another player may, only by virtue of luck, throw his grenade immediately after and catch an enemy who happened to wander into the same area seconds later.
Did the second thrower toss when he tossed because he was exercising an uncommon sense of timing? Maybe so, maybe not. You can't tell unless you're there asking him why he's doing what he's doing.
My posts are not about giving everyone some formula or method that you can apply to a player and figure out if he is skilled - because you really can't do that without playing alongside, or against, the player in question. My post is simply about defining the term "skill", which I've done a number of times now.
Skill is the ability to perform a certain action substantially better than the average BF2 player.

So then, it would take even more skill to take him down with a pistol? But you wouldn't do that, I presume. Why is it fair to use a rifle, but unfair to use a grenade launcher?
I think that there are really two types of skill.
Physical skill - the ability to perform a difficult maneuver, a long shot, or an evasion.
Game skill - the ability to win the game, as the rules are written
Dropping back to my basketball analogy, it seems like a lot of people look at grenading the same way as drawing the charge. It may win you the game, and it takes its own kind of skill - but it is also kind of cheap and unsportsmanlike and nobody is going to brag and tell stories about this guy who was great about standing in the way on defense.
And the guys who can only run one kit or vehicle are like slam dunk artists who can't play D, pass, or shoot from the perimeter.
So then, it would take even more skill to take him down with a pistol? But you wouldn't do that, I presume. Why is it fair to use a rifle, but unfair to use a grenade launcher?

It does take even more skill to take that player down with a pistol because it's naturally a worse weapon (in most instances) than a rifle and CERTAINLY a grenade launcher. It's more fair to use a rifle because it's more balanced than a grenade launcher. A grenade launcher only requires one shot to kill somebody and it doesn't even have to hit the person. There's a big window there for the grenade launcher user. They can hit the guy directly, right in front of the guy, to the side, behind him, etc. Not only that but the grenade explodes on impact, so there's no timing required like there is with throwing a grenade. On top of that it's launched in the air very quickly and cannot really be dodged (unlike the AT weps) so that makes it even easier to use.
Obviously in most situations the grenade launcher is just a better weapon than a rifle or pistol hence it takes less skill to use.
I still like to use the pistol from time to time becaise it IS tough to get kills against players with G3's or nade launchers especially and I take pride in taking those players down with a crappy weapon (in comparison).
ok for one thing there is no aiming in this game
aiming is what u do when u have real m16 and are trying to put the iron sights on a breathing body 200 meters away
what we are all talking about here is hand eye co-ordination the abilty to place a pixleated cross hair on a pixelated foe with a mouse
as for my definition of skill in regards to bf2 is to able to place what ever cross hair u have ie rocket launcher, pkm, pistol on your target and get the kill before you yourself end up dead and at the same time help bring victory to your side
It's more fair to use a rifle because it's more balanced than a grenade launcher. A grenade launcher only requires one shot to kill somebody and it doesn't even have to hit the person.
And if the grenade launcher were magically gone, wiped out by a virus, there would be another "easiest weapon" in the game - and people who used it would be derided for not having skill.
You strike me as the kind of guy who would give someone a head start in a footrace, just so you could be more satisfied when you finished first.
I don't mean that in a bad way. It IS particularly satisfying to get yourself out of a mismatched contest with your skin intact, like taking down an attack chopper with an arching shot from a T-90. I just wouldn't seek it out deliberately.
It also reminds me of movies when people throw away their gun/knife so they can fight bare-knuckled like men.
well said too,
i has been called a cheater multiples of time while i was bombing in an f35 and blowing the hell up of every tank of even infantry getting in my line of sight...
well my cheat is skill and practice and people never see it: they prefer moaning and cry at me. same as some i know.
Happens to me all the time, Just take it as a complament :)
Jeez, now do we call Merriam-Webster and let them know what skill is?
Because why does it matter? lol I'm just playing the game for fun the way I want. Whatever I enjoy the most in the game I do, whatever weapon, vehicle, or tactic it is.
I'd consider skill to be a net calculation of many things, including kills, deaths, teamplay, velocity of the moon, and the ratio of a ballistic trajectory of a melon vs the static friction of a purple goat.
