Re: Ever feel "guilty" for killing players?

Sometimes I feel bad when a guy is new and he's really trying to get me, only to be cut down by my PKM... I remember how frustrating it was for me as a newb, and it makes me feel bad to force that newbie feeling on to someone else...

I've spent too many rounds being base raped on Cassino in 42 and Reclaiming Hue in BFV to ever feel sorry for anyone. If you are constantly owning someone, you are really making them a better player in the long run. Hopefully they would adapt their game to counter you and learn a few more tricks.

I kinda feel guilty, I'm so cautious not to let it all out and really give the other team all my fight and leave them no chance to fight back when I'm support because back when I used to play Day of Defeat I would get perma banned ALL THE TIME from clan servers when I would play my best and I was to the point that I just about needed a new half-life cd so I could get a new key and keep playin so now I just have this little monkey on my back tellin me not to play too hardcore or I'll get banned from BF2 servers again. But when I do go all out I can really tear **** up...especially on S@K on USMC side, really easy to run down the hill and start spawn camping to get really good k/d ratio but I feel guilty about that too so I usually play MEC and stay on the defensive, plus it's a lil more challenging. One time I was really ****ed off about something so I started playing super aggressive and I ended up 52-11 on S@K using only my light machine gun...I was getting called a hacker by like 8 people and I really hate that because it reminded me of the same Day of Defeat horse****. =\

Strangely enough though he never registered as my fave victim, which has always been odd to me as I know for a fact that I killed him that many times, much more than I've ever killed anyone else. Name was xnaderx I think. So if you read this, sorry man, you where just too easy a target no matter what was happening.
I had the same situation one day. mind you i don't usually snipe but this one guy got me twice because he was spawn killing. so i got upset it was the gulf of oman map and i just got a sniper kit and went and layed down in the train car. I ended up sniping him off the crane, the hotel and and a few other places. i would just scan and find targets and pop them in the head because i was only sniping snipers but i must have killed that same gut about 10 times he was ****ed and kept calling me a noob on the chat.

but he never showed up on my favorite victim thing either it's still some guy i killed 6 times a long time ago

I only feel guilty when im playing the U.S. side, because my character volunteered but the MEC and PLA were most likely conscripts.
No not really, its a game, honest.

I only feel guilty when I TK someone with a bomber. I don't think that the non-pilots understand that, if they get out of a vehicle, it shows up on the HUD as an enemy vehicle for several seconds. If I'm coming around and see an enemy vehicle at a flag, I try to take it out to avoid losing the base. And you can't see friendly tags until you've already dropped fiery death on them. I always apologize but they always punish. However, I never feel bad for killing the enemy no matter what the tactic. He has access to the same tactics that I do. I get alot of complaints regarding bombing the enemy and my reply is always the same...Get a pilot up here that can shoot me down and we don't have to have this conversation...

i respect how the original poster feels. I too feel this way on certain kills. Or especially when i kill, repeatedly someone who obviously isnt very good at the game. If your not good at the game, thats cool. Its for fun. You should have fun. Its a game. Getting owned, is not fun. So newbies, and very casual gamers, yeah i feel a certain, "bad guy" feeling sometimes when killing these guys.
SOmetimes i almost feel that the game's rewards should be REVERSED. In other words, the more you play, and the better you get, your unlocks should go away. So if your a new player, you get everything. As you get better, instead of getting an unlock, you have to decide which one to "throw" away.
Lets face it. If you play alot, in all reality you should be "good" at the game. Then you dont need the fancier weapons. In all reality. :)
But alas. Normal human thought process says this, "screw everyone, but me."
Thankfully, there are a few of us out there, that dont feel this way, in life, and in a game.

C'mon man. It's that thought process that brings us the "No Child Left Behind" act and other such "help the helpless and screw the strong" thought processes. Everyone gets killed in this game. It's all about trial and error. I still get wrecked using certain kits but I play them to learn how to be better at them. The second that you decide to take it easy on someone is when you're going to run across one of their more skilled teammates and get killed. Also, it's a tad disrespectful to act like someone is inferior to you and in need of your pity. Just assume that they are good and shoot them. They will get better and return the favor. If they ask for help, help them but let them ask for it.

It doesn't happen all the time, it's just like every now and then I'll feel wrong about it... and even like if I'm up on top of a building and a guy has his back turned towards me or doesn't know where I am and I shoot and kill him, I'll feel guilty... probably for not really giving him a chance to fire back at me or whatever.

Maybe it's just that I have too much respect for my enemy... or maybe it's that my feelings run so deep that they seep into PC games as well?

Re: Ever feel "guilty" for killing players?

Jet TK's I do feel bad about because it's usually a situation where I just couldn't see the friendly on the map or where I saw one friendly and 3 or 4 enemy vehicles nice and close to each other... so of course I drop (one guy on foot vs. 4 vehicles... I honestly didn't expect him to still be alive by the time my bombs got there) and of course he had managed to somehow run around enough to not die yet and he gets taken out with a couple of the vehicles... nuts. Generally I'm pretty good about not blowing friendlies up but sometimes you just can't see the telltails (one time I blew up a friendly attack chopper repairing over our helipad because I flipped into TV missile mode, saw the helo taking up my entire screen, and couldn't see the 'X' in the middle because it blended in with the greyscale of the camo. That one I felt really bad about until the insta-punish came while I was trying to type out an apology).

Killing the enemy only makes me feel bad if I end up stumbling upon the same poor sucker over and over again in situations where even if he's better than I am he just doesn't have a chance (coming around corners behind him, then he respawns at the flag I'm going for and is right in my sights, then he's running back to the flag and I've picked up a tank and blow him away... and its all the same guy). If its some moron who keeps charging my PKM... that's an entirely different kind of sorrow ;>)

So the real issue isn't the fact you're pwning, but the fact that you're uncomfortable being good at something?

Although having morals is commendable, the fact remains that this is a game. Everyone enters the game knowing that there will be days when your butt gets pwned and days where you're laying down the shiznit.

                          Do you often feel guilty?

I don't know why either... it's kind of like the feeling is just there.

No, thats not the way for me. I just know how ****ing frustrating it is to get totally and utterly pwned without a chance, if i'm in an attack heli and we captured the enemies main base and they are desperatly struggling to get it back and I keep killing them over and over agian. I know that I would get really ****ed and frustrated about it, so I feel sad.

And it's far far worse when you kill the same guy 15 times over in a match, he just happens to always come in front of you.
You mostly just feel sad when you know the guy did not even have a chance.
The opposite is true whne teh tables are turned, when you only have one base and you are beeing attacked from all over and bombed ever 39 seconds, then killing the bastards is very satisfaying.

Re: Ever feel "guilty" for killing players?

For me, it's when we wear a team down to their home base. Once we have them pinned, my clan just sits back to see who can make it out. But it's the other guys on our team that insist on base raping and camping them into oblivion. I learned the hard way that telling your team to not do that is fruitless. Lesson 1 about public servers is that they are the universal magnets for assholes in this world. As our team's jerks whittle away at the enemy, we simply send a message saying "btw, the 47R players are not advocating this base rape. try to get out if you can".

To make matters worse, you start to see droves of enemy players logging off. Where is the fun in that? You know you didn't earn this win if you have to rape the enemy and make them quit. If you got them down to that point, it wasn't a challenge to begin with. Unfortunately, there are so many players that think the opposite of us on this thread. There are those that purposefully seek out servers with no autobalance and a severe bias of power to one side or the other.

My suggestion: eliminate your guilt by wiping the smug smiles off the guys camping you, especially if you make a comback and pwn them.

I feel remorse all the time.

Just last night I was playing at Karkand, and the whole time I had an internal dialog going on:

'Why did you have to run in the road? Now I have to run you over with my shiny tank."

"Why did you try to place C4 on my tank? Now I have to back up over you."

"Can't you just leave my flag alone? I'm so tired of having to blast you with my tank."

"Why are you making us camp you? You can play better than this"

"Not 3 rounds in a row guys. With the wins at Zatar, that's 6 in a row for our side."

Yet, I do my duty and soldier on!

                                J.
