Cheap 6600 or expensive 6800?

Well Folks lets take into consideration that I'm only 14.... And at the moment no job, I have 150 dolars, and I know your all gona hate this but.... I got the 6600 Gt 256mb, its overclocked.... i think... If I had a job I would of got the 6800 in a heart beat.

Do you think there will be a performance boost over the ati x300SE? The New card will be here in 2 days.

Oh and by the way... my specs:

Dell Demension 8400

Intel P4 3.4 ghz

1 gb corsair pc3200 ddr2 Memory

80gb ATA Hard Drive.

(and soon to be 6600 GT OC 256mb)

I have a ATI x300 in right now.

Oh do you know how to check the pc power supply wattage?

I have a BFG 6800GT OC and BFG's web site said it is a 16 pipe card. This is one of the differences between the 6800 and the 6800 GT or Ultra. Just be aware of that.

I also believe that the X800 does not support Microsoft® DirectX® 9.0 Shader Model 3.0 support as the NVIDA card currently does. I believe that they only support Shader Model 2.0 currently. I am not sure if BF2 uses this at the moment, but games in the future will most certainly use this new shader model.

Yes, you are right and wrong, in that post i was talking about the vanilla 6800, i know that the 6800GT and Ultra have 16 pipelines. And that the 6800LE (lame edition) has only 8 pipelines. So therefor that means that i am right about vaniila 6800 only having 12 pipelines and you are right that the 6800GT has 16 Pipelines.

Open the side panel, and look on the PSU, there should be a sticker. Most P4 systesms come with a hefty PSU as the P4 requires a good amount of juice itself. I have a 450 watt PSU running alot of stuff. You should be okay on a 400watt PSU.

OK I checked the Power supply and all it said was:

12V Made in China

Well since I have a P4 3.4 and I gb of memory, you would think I would have at least a 350w Power suppuly.

I have a 6600GT PCI-E and can comfortably run BF2 with all but 3 settings set to high. I run 2 gb DDR-2 Ram with a 3.4 intel P4 prescott CPU.

I was prepared to upgrade but will wait now because it seems to work okay.

Here is a tip. I have twin WD Raptor 36G hard drives running striped raid. All my games are installed on this superfast hard drive set up. On BF2 I usually spawn 3-10 seconds before anyone else giving me my choice of vehicles and first spawn points to go after.

I have an agp 6600GT. It's a great card for the price, and runs at 1024x768x100hz, everything on medium with x2aa at 40-100 fps, except shadows which seem to be the big performance hit, so I've left them off.
I've only in the last 24hrs teamed it with a Athlon 64 3200+, so not really experimented and attempted to set anything to high yet. Although the game looks and runs great on medium.
Obviously if you want to spend more on computer hardware, get the 6800GT, preferably a 256mb..
Beware of crappy PSUs, the card fried my stock 300w PSU on installation, and a replacement 350w. I had to buy a quality PSU - a Tagan 420-u01.

I turned the shadows, Texturing and ..... something else to medium. The rest is high.
The antialiasing is set to 8x as it the antiscropic filtering. The pic quality is set Max ...
I dont remember the rest but I do get some lag with explosions, not all the time but sometimes.

and i have a FX5200. like KingofKhaos said, i'm technically lucky that the $50 BF2 is capable of running on it. otherwise, i have to pay restocking fee when i return it saying that it wouldn't work or get a new card, costing more than the game itself. i guess i'm just lucky and i'm glad it still works.:)

if you are buying a card now and upgrading next year, i assume you're going with PCI-xpress :|:

so that eliminates the 6800 vanilla (AGP version is cheap - $180, but PCI-Xpress rises above the $200 mark so its not worth it)

the whole pipe unlocking is worthless. You might get 3-4 fps increase in games, but 50% of the time it doesn't work and I wouldn't risk damaging my card. There is a good increase in 3dmark, but I dont play benchmarks

the best card to get in the $150 price range is not the 6600GT, but rather the Radeon X800 vanilla, which has 12 pixel pipes compared to the 8 of the 6600GT and it outperforms the 6800 vanilla in the more relevant games such as Half-Life 2. Also performs better under high settings. Uses GDDR3 memory so it'll overclock better.

I have 2 pc's here, one with a Gigabyte 6800 GT 256 AGP running off a P4 3.0 , 1Gig DDR, 550W Power, and ASRock motherboard... I run 1600x1200 high for all except Dynamic Shadow & Dynamic Light which are on medium and 4xAA, 30-50fps.

My gf has a Albatron 6600GT 256mb AGP running off a P4 2.8, 1.5Gig DDR, 450W Power, and Gigabyte Motherboard... 1024x768 Medium Settings no AA. 30-50fps..

That being said... i would highly recommend the 6800GT, I've had mine for a month now and can not find a single complaint.. and as for the guy who said that the 6600 wops the 6800... HEAD CHECK! it so does not...

Get yourself a 6800 GT if you can afford it and you wont be sorry. The graphics really take the game to another level and give it a new depth of immersiveness when playing. The 6600 GT is a great card, but it wont give you those cripsy cream your jox images that the 6800 gives.

ok, one thing i should clear up, for you people (and the thread starter) please specify GT, Ultra or just vanilla. I got confused there, he said it was double the price for the 6800 than the 6600GT, so i thought 6800GT, but that still confuses me. And yes 6800gt vs. 6600GT = no comp, the 6800GT wins hands down, if it were a vanilla 6800, then it would only be a 1-2 fps advantage to getting it.
