Mine takes around 30 secs for most maps. It is usually RAM size, RAM speed, and hard drive speed that affects load time the most. I have 1GB and a hard drive with 16MB cache so it loads pretty fast. Processor type and speed usually doesn't affect loading or FPS that much as far as BF2 is concerned.

If you don't know this you should try defragmenting. It really helps improve system responsiveness. Go to programs->accessories->system tools->disk defragmenter. Then click defragment and go do something else as it may take some time.

I never measured, but I had a quite noticable improvement after I first DEFRAGGED then fragged I think now it loads deffinitely under 1 minute.

      Setup:
      XP 2400+
      1GB RAM
      ATA100 IDE
      128 MB Gfx ram
(all other information should be irrelevant)

Uninstall BF2, but leave your player profile etc etc.
Go to your My Documents\Bf2....\mods\cache\ and delete everything in that directory

Step 1) Defragment your C drive
Step 2) -if you don't isntall BF2 on C:- defrag your target install drive

Do not just defrag once. Defrag multiple times until you see all files "pcaked" nicely.

Install BF2. BF2 will also optimize shaders the first time you load a game. This is because you deleted the cache.

You should see some improvement after this.

The thing is - defragmenter sometimes moves files around, so if you defragment an already installed version, it may just shuffle all the little files. The method I mentioned above, makes sure that all BF2 files are stored close to each other on the disk so the head seeks minimal amount of time.

Edit: your detail settings should matter too. I would assume that large textures, geometries and land detail would delay loading time.

Its only 20-25 secs for me with
              p4 3.2
              1gig ram
              pcx 5750
But I do have 2 10,000 rpm sata raptors in a raid 0 config which is probably what gets it done

I've got a mear 512mb RAM and it takes me about 3-4 minutes, depending on graphic settings i think. I'm going to get 1-2 gig in the next few days ill tell you if it gets any faster.

I don't really see how they could load it in 3 seconds. It takes time to verify client data which I think is CPU bound - it probably runs a CRC check on every byte of something.

Here's an interesting article that shows that i-RAM disk (think of it as fastest disk on earth) saves 5 seconds over raptor on SOME setup http://www.anandtech.com/storage/sho...spx?i=2480&p=8

Almost all servers dont have hardly a startdelay!!
I think they should rise (rais???whatever)it.
Think its not ok that some are playing 2-3 min when other still loading.
I know that bf1942 the server could have a 2 min startdelay, a lot players needed that for forgottenhope map
