However I'm kind of not happy about the variety of jets... Su-34 as a fighter jet? In BF2 that was one of the slowest, least agile jets available. Why not use a Mig-29? F-18 is great but where is the F-22? F-35?

Also only two choppers... Cobra? Where is it?

Maybe I'm mistaken here but in BF2 there was more variety of military machines. There are no bombers in BF3 either.
I wouldnt worry about how the chosen vehicles perform in real life, DICE is going to balance them for gameplay anyway.
As for the lack of varity, it seems to me like they have chosen to have more different types of vehicles with only two variations of each, instead of a number of variations over a few types.

Fighter bombers are gone, that role has now been taken over by ground attack planes. I think they will fit much better in the gameplay.

6 choppers in the vehicles list btw.

You also can't expect them to make a dozen factions, each with their own weapons, when you had so much time and effort put into creating a single player. If they'd only done multiplayer, I bet we'd be seeing more content.

I'm pleased though. I enjoy the selection we've got.

Nope, rechecked it. No maneuvering mid-mouselook.

Slowing down for better maneuvering seems like they have enhanced the physics a lot. Definitely seems interesting.

Yeah I hope the speed is incremental, unlike in BF2 where it was either no thrust, or full thrust. I'd like to be able to slowly increase my joystick's thrust controller and my plane increase/decrease thrust while still flying.

You could easily set your jet to any speed you wanted to, in BF2.

I must have missed something. Whenever I dropped the speed with my joystick it would continue at the same speed until I reached mid-throttle and then it would be 0 thrust, and any less thrust gave me "reverse" mode.

              I think you're remembering helicopters.

No, I remember the jets, because I wrote a chart for speeds at 100%, 80% throttle. I was constantly looking for speeds where the turning radius would be the most optimal. The problem for you may have been in the rather slow change in speeds compared to how fast you move the throttle.

                    Hah.

Well, I can tell you that you could fly the F35B as if it was a helo, using throttle from neg100% to 0% as collective. Sluggish and slow, but perfectly doable, with great control.

Always loved creepin' behind Wake at sea level and then slowly rising above the hill where the J-10 spawned to see the look on the 4 -6 people hopping around waiting for a jet.

This video is almost at viral level. So much anticipation for BF3.

For those hoping this is going to be BF2.5 or so, an improved version of a 6 year old game, you might be disappointed. I think this game is going to be team focused warfare. Losing the commander may be a good thing. That will make team play ever more important. Spotting snipers and such will be your and your teammates job, not the lazy cmdr sitting in a bunker using UAV and scanners all day, and wasting arty shots to kill the sniper on top of a building that is 800m away from everything. Can you tell I'm a bit bitter? :)

Anyway, it looks fantastic, and I will probably have to retire my DJ business in October to play BF3 full time! :)

My games on Wake usually consisted of flying on the jet's side @ 500m with my F35B, and looking below for a J10 with my mouse, then swooping in vertically for an MG kill. After that the raping of the J10 spawn began. I'd fly back and forth from the carrier and drop bombs from 300m onto the J10 as it was about to spawn. I'd get such high scores raping those noobs, and then I'd take out the J10, fly back to carrier to arm, rinse and repeat.

thrust vectoring perhaps....sucks about the free look though, i mean it's next to impossible to use mouse free look on a joystick unless you use xpadder or something but it's still never right with a HAT switch anyway and it gives the person that can use a it a distinct advantage.....how sweet would some track IR support be.....who am i kidding, I'll be happy with proper joystick support....you still cant map analog axis to the throttle in BFBC2 and the fact that 8 of the vehicles that are listed on the fact sheet are already in BFBC2 doesn't give me much hope that the control interface will be corrected.

I hope so, would be pretty awesome. Su-30 in BF2 had thrust vectoring to an extent, and both Su and Raptor had something like it in POE2. It felt odd, but cannon shots were easier to make.
What you can do, is bind mouselook to joystick axis and use the whole stick to look around. It's pretty good if you're scouting the skies. Not the ideal option, but the best under the circumstances.

So the free-look system seems to be the same as that in BF2. I think I posted this above but when I'd be hunting enemy planes I'd fly on my side @ 500m and use CTRL to free-look with my mouse down. It was really annoying switching from my joystick to my M&K.

Chris, was that feasible in BF2 as well?

I think this game will have better joystick support than BC2 did. BC2 was a console port, this is a game built up for PC.
