I might be building my first desktop, as my gaming laptop is now 3 years old, and has an 8800M GTX which is a bit slower than a 8800GTS 320MB desktop card, so I'm not really sure if that will be powerfull enough.

Anyway, if I decide to upgrade this is the spec I'll be going for:

I've not long swapped out a 9800GTX+ for a GTX560ti because I'm trying to spread the cost and not buy all parts at the same time.

The result is a very bottlenecked GPU on my current system - C2D @ 3.7GHz / 4GB DDR2 / Vista 32bit.

Wish list - i5 2500K @ 4.5GHz / 8GB DDR3 / Win7 64 bit.

I'm planning on using this with my current HD4870 1GB until BF3 comes out, when I'll upgrade to the best bang for buck card at the time.

So in order to play this game I would have to spend so much money on my rig that I might as well get a new computer all together. After working this summer I could definitely afford it, and have probably a lot of money to spare. However, the only reason I would be getting this new computer would be to play battlefield 3. My school supplies everyone with a brand spankin new laptop before your freshman and junior years, and all schoolwork would be done of this, so if I need to go somewhere other than my room to work it would not be a problem. I would essentially be spending probably close to $2000 (or maybe more if I want AWESOME graphics) to play this game. Close to not being worth it.

I could totally do it but after spending this money other expenses (rugby dues, alcohol, a girlfriend if I get one) would be very difficult to manage.

I see why some could get hocked on playing the lottery...

Don't know yet, I plan on getting a new rig about a month before the game is out, assuming I can find a job. :I

HD 4850 512MB GDDR5
E6300 @ 3300MHz
4GB DDR2 RAM

BC2 runs horribly on it. It ran even worse before I OC'd.

I find it wierd that BC2 runs horibly on my system yet looks like crap... while games that look quite nice run quite well (well, Just cause 2 looks nice... and arma 2 runs at all at 1200x768...)

BC2 takes more ressources from the CPU than the GPU due to its console roots, that's maybe why.

yeah, thought as much. Need more than the Core 2 duo that came with my Inspiron 530 (not sure of the model number though... All I know is that its in the 2.5 Ghz range.)

Edit: As mentioned earlier, to save money I have decided on a early-ish model i7, about 6-8 gigs of ram, a new case and motherboard (why in the world would I want to advertise the fact that at one point in my life I had a Dell Inspiron, thoug the motherboard replacement is of course required. Im thinking about picking up the case today as I found a few good ones for $80). Still havent decided on the grapics card, as Im currently using an MSI ATI 5570, which is, according to wikipedia, an entry level card. To prevent possible bottlenecking I may need a new one, though I may do what Im doing with the i7 and get a late-ish model card after the new ones are released.

Should I drop the money for an Alienware gaming laptop or try and find something similar for less money? Either way it looks like I have to have a laptop.

Get a simple netbook for classes and then you can get a desktop that can be a little beefed up later for less money.

I don't know your specific situation, but most will find both time and money limited in college.
So I would recommend getting a laptop that meets your educational needs, and worry less about the gaming part.

If money is of no concern, then I would get at desktop for gaming and a suitable laptop for studying. I can imagine dragging around a heavy laptop with a 18" screen gets old really fast.

A notebook? Depends on what you need it for, it has a small screen and a comparatively weak processor. The keyboard isn't gigantic either.
I can see it being used for taking notes during class, but not if you need to do actual work, like drawings, CAD, programming etc.

I use a 500 dollar laptop for classes, and I'm saving up for a new desktop now. Only because I would look foolish with a netbook because I'm 6'5 and 220 pounds haha. Its almost like me driving a smart car.

i use a 1200 euros laptop that should cost about 700 euros right now for gaming and classes. My dream right now is to buy a desktop in 1 or 2 years
