Well neither really, but from what everyone is saying commander didnt work. I guess Im just blindly trusting people. Though they are probably acting more rationally than the EAUK community about it though.

Im really surprised by that. I played commander a lot during BF2/2142 and MANY times a mutiny vote was started as soon as I got the position and would be SUCCESSFUL! Havent even done my first commander action yet. Squad leaders ignore orders. No one fix my broken stuff, but me as I would go engineer. As a squad leader I would have commanders running around fighting and never give an asset support. Some would hide in the corners and never do anything. Then there are the servers that made rules saying No commander, which was against ROE, or other strict rules about it. There were a few servers that only its clan members could be commander.

So, there are my experiences with commander throughout my BF2/2142 history. When we did get a good commander and squad leader, it worked great and was a lot of fun, but those were rare.

Commander isnt really needed. One thing about commander is that all the assets they give, the squad already has. Assault/Support gives ammo, Medic gives health, Engis repair vehicles, Recon can do mortar strikes. I say, give the squad leader UAV (One uav per team. Whoever uses it first uses it) and dont mess with commander.

Thats IF there will be a UAV of some sort. We dont even know if there will be.

        Re: BF3 Commander position desired?

So I posted some replies since yesterday and the reasoning people are giving for commander are rather weak. One person gave a pretty good reason as people want to play the game different as an RTS style. Thats a pretty good reason. Its true that it changes gameplay.

So out of 17 pages of "reason" only 1 post has "almost" made me think commander would be a really good addition.

You guys have any other reason other than "Its in BF2 and BF2 was the most awesome game ever made and so for BF3 to be awesome it has to be BF2."?

Im not really against not having a commander, but I dont see how its a "deal breaker" if its not in. Especially if they give the powers to squad leader or a field commander position.

          What page?

Stop thinking about the BF2 commander "eye in the sky" and play PR and see, same for FH2 even though it's less useful than PR. It's like a RTS except you have to rely on real persons to get the job done, it's a tool to coordinate the team, I don't know what more do you want. It just needs a good game design and not some half-assed ideas.

Red Orchestra 2 will have a commander working with squad leaders btw, even though it's true most of the players of Red Orchestra are better disciplined.

            Re: BF3 Commander position desired?

Its the bottom of page 18

listen DICE, sure there are bad commanders out there, but in a private game or clan play, command structure is irreplaceable, if you don't like commander getting 2X the points just take a way that feature, give them a 20-pts pin or something, don't get rid of the feature all together. people play this game for different reasons, some ppl like to be a good commander play as an RTS, some like to play infantry to kill ppl.
Thats the thing, all anyone says is that BF2 commander should be there. A few people have mentioned making it more teamwork oriented, but most just say put it back like BF2. Thats fine and all, but there were too many issues with that. It should be more team coordinated. If the commnader controls all assets or if the squad doesnt listen, then both should fail. A good commander can compensate for bad squads and that shouldnt be. Not entirely anyway.

This is how it should happen, but it doesnt because thats teamwork and most dont know what that is:

The servers I played in didn't allow commanders to fly or idle in a vehicle someone wanted.

Most of the time, they sat somewhere safe and commanded. I also never had a problem with getting support from the commander, unless he was helping someone else. My usual commander experience was him putting artillery on neutralized flags, supplies for tanks and APCs fighting enemy armor, UAV in hot spots, and spotting enemies behind our line capping flags.

It seems like you just want to get rid of commanders because you haven't had a good experience with them as much.

No, the truth is that I dont mind one way or another. I was an excellent commander in the games and Ive played with some great commanders. The things people are saying though about how awesome commander was is total bunk. I want people to remember the reality of the game with commander.

You played on servers that had strict regulation of the position, so it was protected. I played all over the place on many different servers. You may have too. My belief is that if you have to make rules to stop a position form being abused, then its flawed. Lets fix the flaws in BF3 and not be blind about the issues with having a commander. It was great fun playing as commander and really fun when you had a good one. It was no fun whatsover when you had a bad one and other team a good one and in the end, when your squad pulled a victory out of the ashes, your bad commander gets the points and gold star.

Well the only way to force commanders to command would be to have something like BC2's UAV computer somewhere safe in the main base, or have them not even be spawned in the map. But then people would always go back and kill the commander and nobody would want to be a commander if an enemy was just camping it.

Yeah, thats true, but not a bad idea either. I dont mean a BC2 thing, but maybe the commander enters into a command station and that command station is a little beefed up so that it can take a pounding, but could be destroyed.

                    Or would that suck too?

IMO i think the commander shouldnt be on the map. He should just be an eye in the sky type of figure.

I think that would still suck.

Because once the command post is destroyed, your team has no commander. And that'd probably happen more when you're pushed back to your main base and are already getting raped, so then you don't even have a commander anymore so it'd be a lot worse.

Who says it has to be destroyable? Oh I just read the entire quote. Yeah anything like that shouldn't be destroyable. Killing the commander seems effective enough doesn't it?

I really don't think I've been playing the same BF2 as Crunch.

Commander 264:16:25 I can count how many times I've been voted out on one hand.

Good commanders can change the direction of the game assuming SL's actually listen to the commander.

I think the way it should be implemented is commander can roam on the battlefield, but in order to use the assets/airstikes/higher power stuff the commander would have to be inside of a command post. If not inside of it, the commander could only do basic stuff like communicate with all the squads, maybe approve squads request of getting supplies but not call in airstrikes.

In my experience in 2142 there are bad commanders who are as good as not having one and then there are awesome ones who relay you information of the enemy movement and positions, takes out key targets with airstrike and provides supplies when asked for.

Im not saying leave it destroyed, it can be repaired, like an asset.

But yeah, then there is no commander at all while its being repaired, so thats not really good either.

I wasnt mutinied successfully all the time, but MANY times it came up as the game started. I even remember a time when no one was commander for the first 15 minutes and so I saw a need for it and took it. MUTINY. Just like that.

Like I said though, its no big deal if there is a commander, I would like to see all the weak points of having one resolved though.
