I just want them to do SOMETHING with BF42....

I thought 1943 would keep me satisfied for a while and then they never even released it lol

I just want something to happen...

i want the whole 1942 update, not just maps. after canceling 43 for PC, i have a feeling they might revisit WWII BF again, as a full game.

        Re: BF3 Commander position desired?

I loved the commander position in BF2142 and actually would like to see it in BF3 as long as it doesn't become a hinderance to gamers. BF2142 at times was only if the commander position wasn't filled, or was filled by someone who didn't understand the game or what to do. I do hope BF3 has an option like Titan mode where there is more than one way to win.

          Crunch,

I think you should return to the EA UK Forum to do some damage control.(Ref. CDR Yes/No) Even though you made many posts after this quote, you still left on this note, "No need for commander. Crunch"

Believe it or not this next link was a reply directed toward Crunch from the ongoing discussion in the EA UK Forum:
Homepage for Total Gaming Network and CS-Nation. Get the latest video game news, previews, and reviews on a daily basis.

This is an older case in support of the Real Time Strategy (RTS) discussion point:
Go to the 5th post from the top by OpsChief (last paragraph):

          Here is my battlefield story:

Also, this thread does look like a successful thread. See, TGN forum folk should not shun outsiders. This is referring to the warm welcome offered by Vreki. Having a good discussion even changed the mighty Crunch's mind.

Crunch, good video by the way of the significance of a commander in online gaming. (the PR video posted earlier in this thread)

Hmm, it looks a bit like DICE were right, most people just doesn't care.
And when you ask if BF3 needs a Commander some are going to say "No, the game will be just fine without it"
A third option with "No, but I wouldn't mind it" might had given more votes in your favour

              Re: BF3 Commander position desired?

I come from the old era, 1942 was more than fine without Commander.Infact alot of old vets resented the majic death from above ruining their epic long gun fights.

So if there is one give commander no arty and if he does have uav, make it so that it doesnt go through walls/roofs like bc,bf2.

Who knows what dice is thinking but i hope they stop this majic missiles and bombs from above. In bf2 you could not choose your commander so it could be some 9 year olds commands screaming at you.

              Id also like to add.

Imagine a BF game without scripted arty rain or mortar, well 42 had this but it did have arty(manually operated turrents)
It also had manual mortar deployment

                Re: BF3 Commander position desired?

I am not particular fond of class-based artillery either. It becomes a bit too much when half of the players are snipers and can call in mortars.
Real artillery vehicles is my preferred solution, that way the number of artillery pieces on a map is a constant.

                    Re: BF3 Commander position desired?

In BF2 I would play as Commander whenever possible. However, I didn't like to sit in a safe spot while commanding. I took the frontline commander position. I played as Spec Ops and I would head to the enemy base to destroy my counterpart's assets, all the while using my own assets. I never flew while commanding because the two actions are mutually exclusive. I would, although, drive any land vehicle.

I never suffered a successful mutiny. Sure, there is always someone who is unhappy because you didn't drop supplies the split second after they had requested them. I found that the key to successful command was merely to communicate. Someone asks for an asset and all I had to do was say I'd already sent it somewhere else and that they were next up. Or I'd direct them to the supply crate or spare vehicle where ever it landed.

One solution to the 'new' command position in BF3 would be that the commander would have to have a forward observer(pick the class, i don't care). The forward observer would have to laze the target similar to darting in BC2 but only that the commander would be the only one to bring down arty on the lazed/darted position/asset/vehicle.

Whatever the case, I think the Commander position is just one in a long line of things that makes Battlefield different from every other run and gun shooter. Due to the scope of the maps on BF2, it was crucial to have the option for a commander. Otherwise it was just a disparate group of chickens running around pecking at one another to little affect.

Have the Squad Leader and Sniper with the ability to call in Fire Support/Indirect Fire and Commander controls/approves. This would reduce indirect fire frequency and increase teamwork. Fire Support could also include aviation Close Air Support (CAS) with a request approved by the commander and a temporary CAS communication channels opens up for the squad leader/sniper to talk directly with the jet/helio supporting the attack.

Thanks for the heads up and links SWF. That makes it a lot nicer to figure out what you were talking about. I also did not know that the other thread was directed more toward my statements, so I didnt really think to reply. In fact, to a degree I agree with you on the other thread. I will sit down when I get a moment and go over that a bit more.

I try to be open minded on other peoples ideas and if they can provide a good, justified reason, it can change my mind. Some things wont because its just opinion and thats how it is. Just like this where most people are saying "Bring back BF2 Commander" The End. There were flaws in that setup and it really wasnt that great. The intent was good and the idea and belief of teamwork was sound, but seeing it in action proved otherwise MANY times.

These are changes that would MAKE teamwork. If you are going to be commander, you HAVE to do things commander related to EARN those points. Its ideas like this that can make the commander position something real.

                          If you want commander..

                          1. What are his roles on the battlefield?
                          2. If hes only going to be only good for supplies and orders is it worth it?
