you don't have to! You have your line formation, keep your general near but behind it (boost morale etc) and fight it out, if your enemy flanks you then it isn't just a case of the General being in trouble lol

Well yea, AI cav always attempts to flank me and kill my general, thus I have to pull troops out the line to defend from the flank, so instead of doing that I assign a good 2-3 units to defend my general form the start.

Who are you playing as? as Rambo said, starting research on farming helps a lot in the long run, also get as many schools/unis as you can to get uber research speeds.

if you are Great Britain then you are literally immune from naval invasions so you just project power through Navy, keep 1 army going to gain colonies etc, then when you are uber rich plow through everyone

I spam research though, make a crapload of universities in your home region because these can be upgraded fully (ones outside your capital region cannot be upgraded to the highest level university) then research research research!

oh and build the gentlmen producing opera houses

Austria ftw! I am having good fun, have created a Northern (To deal with Russia and Prussia), Central (To deal with Venice/Spain/factions around Italy/Lithuania-Poland) and Southern army(To deal with Africa and the Ottoman Empire), all supported by smaller armies mainly consisting of Linemen. Have taken out most of the European factions, only Britain (cause they have been a good ally against the Ottoman Empire), Poland and Russia still stand. Have three full strength fleets, and its only 1760! Just taken out the Ottomans. Have to post some screenshots, have had some really awesome battles, DarthMod ftw!

Hint* after you made schools and developed the technologies destroy them and make factories in thier place $$$,Im gettting around 100k a turn now in trade.

Game still crashes to hell and vista started to block steam lol,but its 1795 and ive claimed all my objectives,does it go past 1800?

Im waiting for my fergursons to come(i have green jackets)

its 1799 ive completed the long campain.

even though it is a great game i have some gripes

1 lack of different soldiers
2 no pike men or sword men(melee men)
3 special forces not seen even when installed
4 fergusonsi get one unit only for the whole world

dont know how far past 1800 it goes but every nation hates me now lol

WHY NO PIKE MEN GRRRRR,maybe my tech isnt good enuf for sticks :hmm:

Historically there was only one unit of Ferguson riflemen and they got disbanded, most of the unique units can only be recruited once

no pikes = that was 17th century warfare

melee units = you can get them like Ghoorkas, or the Ottomans who have some good melee Janissaries otherwise Western nations armies were standardised towards musketry

what unique units do you have available?

actually pikes were used well into the 1800s ,as long as there was horses they needed pikes to stop a charge but im not going to arguesalute:

Well you can still get them, I have had pikemen in the Americas etc

but with a bayonet on the end of your musket, you pretty much have a pike, after all horses don't charge into a square of bayonets

(unless they suicidal )

When I attacked the Danes I had to go against the pikemen. They had these long spears and I almost lost a calvary unit until I relized what they had. I quickly routed them to the flank and sent in some other melee units to fight them.
