I find the naval warfare confusing. I can not seem to capture the ships. An enemy ship will still be at a pretty good health and starts to sink. One time I killed the entire crew on a ship. The ship was in really good condition and I was just using canon fire, no grape shot.

Last night I was shot up a bit on one of my admiral ships and it killed the admiral. Just like that. Ship is good no other problems just lost my admiral.

Anyway, its still fun, just the weirdest things happen.

thats naval warfare for you Nelson got deaded at Trafalgar, a cannonball can do nasty things

capturing ships can be quite hard yer, you really have to bracket them and hose them with grapeshot otherwise they will rout and escape

or worse case scenario your ship broadsides them point blank and they explode lol

Usually I just make the enemy ships surrender, a lot of the times you get to add them to your fleet after the battle

I have about 3 fleets now, one running around India, one in the English isles and the other hunting down pirates

and my Admirals all have good stats, they are all on 3rd rate flagships though

            and third rates are awesome

I pretty much control all of India as Marathas, all the major nations love me haha, as Prussia, things are a bit iffy but I control most of eastern Europe. And as GB...well it was my first campaign so I control pretty much nothing haha.

I have a couple of places in India, and I'm now starting my European campaign, already got Paris, Strasbourg, Hannover and Stockholm. :awes

                        Re: Total War series

after about 60 hours of play the major issue i have is that the AI doesn't launch naval invasions, which basically kills the game for me after 1740 when i take the best colonies (south America, sri lanka and the Caribbean islands and they can do nothing about that)

Another minor issue is that France is really weak, they just keep about five armies on the mainland not attacking anything there so passive, the best ive seen them do is to take 1 province, the worst ive seen them do is be crushed by tiny savoy

                          Re: Total War series

yeh Ai naval invasions seems to be some hardcoded issue that CA will have to fix, the modders have found ratios etc for the AI that relate to spending on naval invasion but it appears the mechanism is broken

I am playing with Quixotes campaign AI and it has greatly improved the opportunism of factions especially France, the early game a lot of factions will upgrade their economies properly and research (there was an awesome war with Prussia, Sweden, Russia, Poland etc)

now its about 1750, I am GB atm and the French are pushing East madstyle; wars in central Europe, the Iriquois took 2 settlements from the 13 colonies which led to the creation of the United States and the campaign AI seems to be much improved

Spain remains quite passive because of its AI profile, which basically means it is geared towards creating home armies that are dispersed by ships to protect its lands etc, but because naval invasions are broken it can't lol

This game will just get better though imo

Anyone else think the 'general dying' mechanic is overkill now? Its fairly ridiculous to see a whole army retreat when a general dies, even when the Gens bodyguard are not even in the the line of sight, units will all just run. Whats worse is when its not even a general its just the commander.
Its a mediocre game, Navel warfare adds little to the game overall, AI is still as bad as ever, diplomacy is shocking, land battles are much more repetitive than previous games, horrible patches that break the game. I really wish I had not bought this now

thats morale for you I keep me General safe

as for Naval battles I love them personally and don't have any crashing/breaking issues

I am using the Quixote campaign AI atm though, its great

Yes, you should try to keep your general safe, but not have to base your whole strategy around defending him.
