For starters, the game engine has nothing to do with the models. Battlefield 1942 had very different models to Battlefield Vietnam, and they were both built on the same engine. Same goes for BF2 and BF2142.
Secondly, although it's not a very high standard of evidence, the allegedly leaked shareholder brief for BF3 states that "Frostbite DX" will be the engine being used.
To say there is "no real evidence anywhere" is false. The evidence that does exist isn't exactly bullet proof, I'll give you that, but it's certainly not non-existent.
I would be very surprised if we don't hear about this game at E3, and will be utterly shocked if it's not in development at all.
