World at War Blowtorch & Corkscrew Hands-on

IGN has posted up a new hands-on preview today of Call of Duty: World at War. Also included are some new videos. Check it out:
It's disturbing just how much fun the flamethrower is in Call of Duty: World at War. Using it, you get an idea why this inhumane weapon has now been banned by many nations. This is a weapon that pretty much melts people; you see them writhe in unspeakable pain as their skin blackens and they keel over and die. It is, without doubt, the signature weapon in World at War, a World War II shooter built on the superb Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare engine. The flamethrower gets a lot of use in the game, particularly by the US Marines as they burn out the tenacious Japanese Imperial Army. And the flamethrower is at the heart of one of the levels in the second half of the game, called Blowtorch & Corkscrew.

Set amidst the titanic battle for Okinawa in 1945, Blowtorch & Corkscrew (referred to as Blowtorch at this point) is based on the battle for Wana Ridge, part of the Japanese defensive line. You play as a rifleman in the 1st Marine Division, and in this mission you start off heavily-armed, with a M1919 Browning machine gun and an M2 flamethrower. While you can pick up other weapons from the battlefield, these two are so powerful that you likely won't need to.

WaW's only letdown are the sounds. They should be more beefy.

No, you are a smart Raider and have hearing protection. Ear plugs ftw.

This is the way things sound in battle with the understanding that the publishers do not wish to harm the hearing of those playing the game. If the volume is too loud, they risk damaging the hearing of those playing with headphones, etc. This is a liability issue Sound Designers have to deal with and so they carefully balance the various sounds.
