Have to agree with Chris on the twattish developers, there seems to be so many nowadays that just waste everybodies time by releasing utter trash and they wonder why they get pirated

I would also add that Stardock and steam are excellent services, I have a lot of games on steam and Sins of a solar empire on stardock and theyre great, if they combat piracy successfully then Im all for those systems

Agreed. Steam is an example of how gaming and new technologies such as online downloads can work in harmony.

They also support small developers which is good to see.

The future of PC gaming is the beacon of hope for video games everywhere.

Valve and Stardock both know they have a successful business model in their hands, and they're quickly growing and maintaining a monopoly through brand-name recognition.

Thats why I'm willing to bet hard-money on the fact that they are going to be the biggest players of PC gaming eight years (Two Game Generations) from today. Not Electronic Arts. Not THQ. Not Ubisoft.

Valve will cost EA billions to buy even now - and I don't think Stardock shares are even publicly traded.

People that don't know **** about PC's should use MAC's those are machines for teh retarded. Piracy huh... If your too cheap to pay those 30-45 for a PC game you shouldn't be playing it, I payed for my 4 hour long Crysis game wasn't worth it... in 4 hours and $50 I could have had more fun doing something else. Plus there is a big breakout of piracy for consoles now, it's only a matter of time till those "Casual" gamers figure out that there is a way to burn a copy of a game.

Plus companies should get together and develop a gaming network "like xbox live" or "steam" that would require a registration and would constantly check games if they are legitimate copies.

**EDIT lol didn't realize someone had the same idea. "Great minds think alike"

I'm hoping that in the future more developers who are currently on steam work harder to make their games more stable on that platform, atm there are a few games that have trouble when downloaded from Steam, the valve games work perfectly and there are other 3rd party games that work brilliantly but Stalker and Medieval 2 for example have had a few complaints

Pirates do really piss me off though, PC games are cheap compared to console ones, even cheaper online from someone like Play or HMV yet there are these smacktards out there that go and dl games and then come off and ****ing moan about DRM/starforce/securerom, honestly it pisses me off so much

Two, the numbers on piracy are really astonishing. The research I've seen pegs the piracy rate at between 70-85% on PC in the US, 90%+ in Europe, off the charts in Asia. I didn't believe it at first. It seemed way too high. Then I saw that Bioshock was selling 5 to 1 on console vs. PC. And Call of Duty 4 was selling 10 to 1. These are hardcore games, shooters, classic PC audience stuff. Given the difference in install base, I can't believe that there's that big of a difference in who played these games, but I guess there can be in who actually payed for them
He is missing the mark with this one, that a game is a hit on the console does not make it a hit on the PC
These are hardcore games, shooters, classic PC audience stuff
And we have them by the dozen, it seems The Next Big Shooter is released every month

I don't support piracy, but I think that the publishers tendency to see a one to one relationship between pirated games and lost sales is bogus.
Only a small fraction of those who pirated a game would have bought it anyway.

Maybe they should try making innovative games, instead of competing on who can spend the most cash on making the shiniest shooter?

You cant be serious to assume that COD4 was not a best seller on the PC. Youre saying as if COD4 is "just another shooter", when factually, its a grade AAA game with a muti-million player base behind it, just from the first 2 COD games alone, not to mention other shooters.

Its perfectly feasible that a total of at least 10M people have played this game, even though only 1M has bought it. From what Ive seen and know, COD4 is one of the worst protected MP game ever. You dont even need a cracked exe to play it.

Its a good game, but its not the second coming of Christ. And isn't it a port from the console version? That doesn't necessarily make it bad, but it means it is no surprise if it does better on its target platform.

I could be wrong on this, but didn't COD4 PC still outsell The Orange Box, which is tied to steam and thus much more hacker proof?

Besides the point was that they really have no proof to back the assumption that piracy is the reason cross platform games sell better on the consoles.
Correlation does not imply causation, as statisticians are fond of saying.

Certainly there is some loss of sales due to piracy, but how many of your friends would you say pirate games instead of buying them? I am guessing it is closer to 10% than 90%. An how many of those would have purchased the games if that was the only way to get them?.

It is just like the RIAA: Out of 10 customers 9 have legitimately bought 10 CDs, while one have 100 CDs worth of MP3 on his computer. Conclusion: stopping piracy will double CD sales.
Sure my numbers are made up, but I don't see any hard evidence from them either.

Ask any competitive player, they will say its the second coming of Christ. While not revolutionary, it did what Half Life 1 did when it first came out, which wasnt revolutionary either. They both took the best elements of all shooters today, and basically created a wonderfully working mixture.

More like a parallel development project, and even if its a port, this doesnt say its a bad game on its own. Its literally a benchmark of modern videogame development on PCs. Its target platform is actually PC, as COD2 players were the main target audience.

Youre arguing both statistical facts and direct comparisions simply saying "I think its wrong". PC was COD4 home. Consoles outsold PC 10:1 and last time I checked, they reached 9M copies on Xbox360 (could be wrong with the platform, but it was definitely 9M for something).

Also, do you have actually any idea how much of a problem piracy actually is? The rates 75%-85% in US and 90+% in EU arent just taken from the skies. Its a real rate. Come to EST, youd be hard pressed to find anyone playing legit PC games (meaning, its a statistical minority who does that). This isnt different for most of European countries. The fact that you can crack COD4 so easily and play online without even needing to crack the .exe file shows just how little faith COD4 devs put into protection. They obviously do rely on denouncing servers from the server listing, but who cares if game-monitor.com and Xfire pick up the word "cracked" and give you an option to jump into any of the cracked servers?!

Certainly there is some loss of sales due to piracy, but how many of your friends would you say pirate games instead of buying them? I am guessing it is closer to 10% than 90%. An how many of those would have purchased the games if that was the only way to get them?.
Jesus... just go back and read the first post. As for how many of my friends pirate games? For PC, all of them. Every single one of them. Me included, although I do buy games on PC, I pirate every game in my interest, unless theres a demo. For example. I didnt pirate Bioshock because it had a Demo. I pirated Vegas because it didnt, and I played it through and never bought a copy because it was so bad. I also didnt pirate BF2 because it had a demo, but I bought the copy. I didnt pirate BF2142 because it had a demo, and I didnt buy it. And so on. But most bootlegged yar-yar pillagers pirate games because its so damn convenient, cheap, accessible and... easy. Yes, numbers are 90% for pirates against 10% legit, at least in total numbers in Europe, in PC market.

I picked up a gem of an example off a forum, in a topic regarding music pirating. Some high grade rock band apparently released their album for free off their website (remember, a high calibre rock band, not some garage punk group, I dont remember the name, but they were rock legends, think Iron Maiden-legends). The downloader only had to register themselves up and they got the album. What happened was that even though the album was for free, 90% was freely distributed and still, 10% found their way to the end user by P2P networks.

And even if there is 90% piracy, they still need to prove that the market would be significantly larger without piracy.

I am curious about how they tracked those last 10%? Anyway it doesn't really tell us much on its own. The segments of music "users" able to find and download the free album will contain a larger number of P2P users than the average consumer group, simply because it requires a certain skillset and interest. And the existing P2P users will probably see little reason to register on a site for a slow download of what the can get easier and faster through their usual channels.

I am not claiming that there is no piracy problem, but it is also obvious that some publisher would rather blame piracy than admitting that they are making crap.

Likewise it is easier to throw inflated numbers at clueless politicians than trying to come up with a reliable licensing method.
