Most FPS games hardly ever die. I was in Best Buy last year, and saw Delta Force in its bargain bin for $5. Bought a copy, loaded it up, and there were 100's of servers and 1000's of players, in Delta Force! The game was absolutely horrible, chock full of spawn campers. Eeeek! Played it for about 45 min then uninstalled it. But, it goes to show you that games hardly ever die.
Take a look at http://archive.gamespy.com/stats/. There's some old games in that list. Funny thing is how UT2k4 is more popular that UT3. This list shows the longevity of some games. Half Life, which is several years old, still has the most players. In fact, I'd consider 7 out of the top 10 to be older games.
So, I think BF2 will live on for quite a while, many more years in fact.
