Since I play in mostly 32 player conquest servers, I see commanders as good to have but not required. I used to play a lot of commander, but now I rarely do. Instead, if the game is past the 1/2 point for ticket count, and no one has taken the job, I will if the game is close. That way I can spot, throw some orbs/uav's, and whack a walker as needed. I don't command squads much. All of this still allows me to fight and command (as long as server doesn't prohibit). I rarely walker or apc while commanding.

Now throw all the above to the wind when it comes to the 64 player servers or Titan servers. You owe all the people around you 100% of your commanding attention. Those situations require your constant spotting, supplies, squad coordination, uav's, and OS.

And ignoring the commander is situational for me. If he has my Alpha squad of 4+ defending a rear flag when he won't spot a threat, then I'm off on my own goals. But reasonable commands I follow.

I guess a good commander in the sense that I mentioned it before (giving lots of orders, or even better-VOIP) is only a substitute for a clan captain/practice or comparable. The point is to have someone/something who will direct the team in a tactically sound way instead of every squad doing their own thing. In that sense I will agree that the more players are in a server, the more needed a commander becomes.

On the other hand, when there's few players, there's less enemies but also less of your teammates. This will make it both easier to predict where they will go, and harder to actually do something about it. It'll also make the impact of your actions larger. OS 2 guys in a 64pl server and you've achieved nothing. Do the same in a 16pl server and you've wiped out a fourth of the enemy team:)

Whenever I command I make sure I am engineer, in my base hidden so I can repair my own **** as it gets pwned. That way I can focus on things at my own desire.

I also make sure to provide lots of supply and UAV drops; Orbitals when needed, tho i try to pre-empt them so that they just toss the enemy around while squads move in on them.

I am a good commander, I know this. I always keep squads updated and point out where EVERY enemy is at point of contact/attack and make sure to just keep tabs. But what hinders my job is the crazy lack of discipline on squads. Good on the squads that can listen to the commander, but the ones that do not are useless as bags of week old turds to me. I also take advantage of strategic markers. Where I will move a squad to one position (not a flag, but a position) and have them flank possible attackers and defenders from that position (great one, railways by Gilb or what not) I will usually look for the cons and pro's in a squad before assigning tho, it sucks when you assign a squad of snipers to capture a outpost. Generally doesn't turn out well.

Clan squads are my fav tho, because they tend to compliment each other kit wise.

Fingulfin, I am going to be completely honest; and I am not flaming you or attempting to bait in any way.

I agree 100 percent with Darq, he understands how the military works; it seems you don't have that knowledge. Aside from the marching, the arms training and basic safety drills you learn a few things in the Army. Shut up and follow orders; which is exactly what you should do; rank is no excuse. Mutiny the commander if you do not like it and then be the commander so you can give the orders.

I have four different BF Characters, OriJuice being one of them. SC22 being the main and then some others. In no way am I a great BF player; I don't go owning 74-8 every match, and truth be told I am a much better aim in RL then on BF. There is no "Experience" needed to play BF, any kid can pick it up and do it, having been owned by kids in Halo and in BF I can attest to that. No matter your age you can either be good or be bad. In layman's terms I don't give two ****s about my stats, so go ahead post them and then tell me how bad I am, I will get the amusement of you caring. I play BF for fun, and commanding is really fun because it makes me think. Don't give me larky bull about "You don't have hand eye co ordination". Some people are just better at video games than others, but last I checked BF doesn't give me a paycheck.

If you can command well, and you keep me up to date with VoIP or at LEAST the in game chat, I will follow your orders. Getting my respect is something you have to EARN. Just because you hit the "Apply" button and then hit page up doesn't mean you are a good commander.
This kills me, it really does. Because people like you dropped from basic within a mere week as their expectations were poorly shattered. You get what you give, remember this. The world does not revolve around you, nor should you expect it to. Don't bother giving me a lecture about who you are, or what you can do or ******** like that, we don't need it as we have obviously seen enough to judge what kind of person who must be like. As for how you play; keep doing it. If it works for you then good, keep playing that way. But don't expect to sway others to your judgmental thinking.

You're quite right. No matter what any one else tells you, a Commander who actually spots enemies, armor, ships, etc...... will be more successful than those who don't. Provide UAVs, supplies, sat-scans to those who need it, not those who demand it.

If thats what suits you, then so be it. I have simply found that it is better to simply ignore the morons around you and concentrate on getting the job done rather than sit around waiting for them to pick up the slack. If you want something done right, do it yourself. I am the type of person who will TK you if you refuse to get out your medical hub when I have been sitting there SCREAMING for meds for the past minute and a half.

Please, don't even TRY to equate this to how the real military works. First you say "In real life people shut up and follow orders", next thing you say is "Its a video game, anyone can play it, it doesn't give me a paycheck" etc. Choose. You can't be saying "This is how it works in Real Life!" and then be saying "This isn't real life, so I could care less". This isn't real life. So care less.

If this were ANYTHING like how the real military works, when I as a Brigadier General demand that I drive that tank, gosh darnit I will be driving that tank. NOTHING in this game can relate to how the Military works. Just because I don't apply Military Values to my in-game time doesn't mean I don't understand them. I'm not going to give you my life story, but suffice it to say that I know VERY well how the chain of command works.

            Back on topic...
I like a commander who will leave me the hell alone and give me crap when I ask for it. I can update my own orders. I know how to play strategically. I know how to win, and I win A LOT. If you are in my squad and want to win, we will charge together onto the battlefield and take that flag, cap that silo, clear out those enemies... What I don't want is some stupid "Your Commander has issued an order! Push Page up to accept or Page Down to Decline" at the bottom of my screen.

If you use VoIP, give me strategic orders and don't waste your assets, I'll follow your orders. If you don't I will sit there wishing I had a button that could mute everything the commander says. Its as simple as that.

I'd like to think I'm good commander, as I do the stuff that's been mentioned here. (Except I probably don't talk directly with my squads as much as I should.).

Spot enemy's that are flanking or snuck past the front lines. On the same note, spot the area around my guys that got past the front line, even the question marks on empty land can help them out. Only spot out a guy once and wait for it disappear before spotting him again, although I sometimes over do it - I tend to get a lil excited. :p

I try to keep Orbitals off of my guys heads, which doesn't always net the most kills, but hopefully helps my team more. At least in my mind, a slightly off the "sweet-spot" orbital strike might help my boys to push 'em back, even if it didn't kill as many as it could have otherwise.

I think the primary job of the commander is to keep the enemy's armor out of the fight as much as possible. I spot the target, to let my guys know where it's at and let them know I'm awear of it too. Also, spotting it just before the EMP/Orbital comes in, hopefully my team will get out of the way and avoid any unnecessary team kills.

I don't think Engineer's always the best kit for commanders. Sometimes it's better to go recon and protect a path with APMs or RDX a flag radius that you know is a hot target. So the commander doesn't have to pull guys off the front line to chase down a lone enemy or defend distant flag.

Also try to remember to commend squads for following orders. And thank them over voice at the end of a round, even if we lost. Tend to get better results if you end up commanding again later. :salute: (and it's just a nice thing to do anyway)

Back to the original post, the commanders really at the teams bidding. It's the commander's job to support the team, not the other way around. It's a thankless job, if the fights going well - the commander just took someone's award (1st,2nd, 3rd). If it's going badly - it's all the commanders fault. But still, I enjoy commanding, It's one more aspect to a great game !

All I know is that, despite all the rewards and what not, 2142 has nothing on squad play compared to BF2.
Fin's comments sum it up nicely. I want....I want.....I want.... but screw your orders.
If I'm Commander, the squads that are actually organized are the ones that get a UAV, supply drop, orbs,....etc.... not the lone wolfers. Except for the spotting so the enemy doesn't see a UAV overhead.
IE....don't run around as an independent, then expect me to provide you with all my assets. Why would I? If you want me to leave you alone, believe me, you're alone.

id have to disagree. bf2 to me doesnt have a squadplay feel to it as most people you sqaud with tend to bugger off and do their own thing(nade spam on karkland lol) or wait for jets/ helis to spawn which i hate so much(why i left bf2)

2142 just has a better squad feel to it but thats just me i guess:)

That's a silly thing to say as bf2142 has more squad mechanics than BF2 does.

Well, in 2142 there is more encouragement to BE IN a squad, not necessarily PLAY AS a squad Whether or not people actually use the squads like they're supposed to depends more on kit/class dependency, gameplay balancing, map design, etc and of course the playerbase.

I haven't really seen a difference between the two. Of course mid-high level clans use sufficient squad play both in BF2 and BF2142, and on pubs I can't really notice a difference. It's only slightly more noticable maybe because when people use a squad leader as spawn point in BF2, they just appear out of thin air, while in 2142 they drop from the sky with added effects The latter is just a bit more flashy:p

I agree with Desmond. I don't give out assets to squads and individuals that do not need them. Ie, if a lone wolfer requested some supplies I will not waste that crate on one person, I will give it to a squad doing their job.

The squads are there for a reason; and hopefully the people within the squad will listen to the commander. It's better to be organized poorly than to not be organized at all and have a bunch of grab assing vossers running around with their own agendas.

If you are not in a squad than join one, if you refuse to listen to orders then openly question the commander. Don't be that useless **** that sits there and follows their own agenda. I would rather be openly questioned than just ignored, it keeps me informed on how I do as a commander, rather then just assume.

If your all getting so serious go and join a clan - you wont get many quality teamwork games on a pub server - stop whining and go and join a clan - if you can't be bothered its up to you

                            Good suggestion

Finished a TWL Match last night, it was the most intense game of 2142 I have ever played. We lost (Final Ticket count was 4-0), but that doesn't change the fact that it was INTENSE.

                              Part of a clan already.

My closest match was a 1-1 ticket tie; I got teh last kill. Yay

The most intense match was on Gibraltar, I was the only one left alive on my team and I managed to get from EU base to Harbor (Cloaked) and take it over, we then came back for the win because I took over harbor. It was pretty crazy tho

                                i once made a draw
it was 2-1 for the enemies ticket wise. i used my engenier wapon to blow up the walker but i was also death by the AoE of the rocket.
ontopic: i hate being commander. we mis someone on the ground and i suck at commanding in fps. the reason that i suck is:
                                1 the squads don't listen
2 the details on the map are not enough for me to make exact the right dessisions.
                                3 i hate it.
4 you have to hide and flee for being a good commander but that's not how i am. stay and hold on so the rest can flee to a better position or hold the enemies to a stop and retreat/push futher.
5 you can't see whats happening in front if you if you are in command screen and vice versa
