I see a couple of problems with the commander position really.
One of them is the no-fighting-rule, another one is VOIP.

Practically no one ever uses VOIP, let alone commanders. I've found this to be crucial to playing/commanding well. I tend to get together with some friends, and join online servers from our LAN.
I usually command whenever we do that, everyone else in the room squads up. This way, I get the commander assets, I can help the rest of the team, but I can directly talk to one of the squads.

Guess what: we win pretty much every round by a large margin, and our squad is ALWAYS top squad.

The simple, yet often overlooked reason for this is that the ingame commander orders are VERY limited to say the least. There's no order chaining, you can't really relay a lot of the info you have to squads effectively, etc...
This results in decent-good commanders often giving orders that may not make sense to the squads they are issued to, but DO make sense when you can see what the commander sees. Attitudes like Fingulfin's here are a common way to handle that: "If I can't see it, it's not happening"
A very selfish attitude if you ask me.
His example: "Move to the middle of nowhere" might not be a very logical step when you want to cap as many flags as possible, but there's a good chance the commander gives that order to get you out of the way of two large squads supported by tanks coming your way, or to guide you around the enemy instead of into them.

For instance, when I see a squad going for our back flags, I tell my friends what's happening and ask them to go intercept them. All the while, they can ask me to keep things steady at whatever flag they were attacking at that moment by using arty or sending other squads over there.
Also, a commander is the ideal 'sneaking' unit because when you use scan/UAV well, you can see everything. We often have our squad taking over one 'tough' flag with my support, and me taking over a more distant flag on my own at the same time because everyone's distracted by our squad.

I'll agree there are mediocre commanders to say the least, but that goes for every other discipline in every game ever made as well. Serial-ignoring commander orders because you just assume that you know better than someone who has bloody satellite scan powers is very ignorant.

Well, I think fingulfin is right.
But he just tells it a little to extreme..
Yes sure does the commander have to earn your respect. But dont forget that he have allot of things to do too Let your team win.. Like orbitaling enemy in front of squad 2 while you are squad1 1000000miles away..

I Hate squads who dont lissin to me <If i am commander>
Because you dont get the feeling of : OMFGG I will help those ****ers get 1000 golden stars. So allot of the times if you do what i tell you i will give you annything you need, Everywhere. And anny time..

But if i am squadleader, I Hate it when commander spam the '' Strike at this position'' Like 100 times.. And that stupid sound of "Hostile infantry spotted''

Why do you hate it when your commander essentially gives you a temporary wallhack? Those stupid infantry spots are there for a reason: to tell you exactly who is where and where they are going. This is comparable to having hacks in a normal game, yet you complain about the sound of it? Odd...

I just get the feeling a lot of people wanna do their own rambo thing instead of actually playing tactically. Rushing whatever flag is nearest != best tactic.

I get the feeling that the good commanders out there rather be on the ground doing the work himself because he can't trust his teammates to do it, and who can blame them considering the random skill level on public servers.

I can do a reasonable job at commanding when there are actually some good squads worth helping. But I rather see my enemy in the crosshairs of my gun rather than just red dots on my map.

Thats exactly why I don't do any of this commanding lark...
I get annoyed at people, I just cant conceive how 6 people can all not move forward but instead sit at the back just with a sniper waiting for that random kill to walk past them.

When I squad lead and actually get a random commander who actually understands his role, I thank the lord. Getting someone like that is basically a miracle, since most commanders simply *a Get commander position, Go and do something else (AFK) or 2* Get commander then get in the walker and play like they forgot about it!

Hello, who are you? Cause if this is you, you are not in any position to be telling me how to play this game.

The "Move" Order doesn't give any bonuses, and is normally disregarded by squad members. It does ABSOLUTELY NOTHING for my squad. If I need a commander to tell me how to navigate around enemies, I shouldn't be leading my squad. You can't wait for your commander to give you orders, cause chances are he wants to order you to move to the opposite side of the map from where your squad is at.

Do you know how I play? Do you know my style? My goal in every round I play is to win. My W/L Ratio is over 4.0/1, because I know how to win. I am the guy who suicides from the harbor to defend the Ruins cause a FAV got through. I don't care about personal score, as long as we win. And guess what? I normally come out with a Star. WITHOUT the help of a commander. The ratio of stupid commanders to smart commanders is something like 10000000000000000000000/1.

I have still only seen one or two commanders who I would follow even if they told me to move to the middle of the desert... He keeps everyone updated via VoIP, he places his assets appropriately, he always tells squads WHY he is giving them a seemingly meaningless order... He shows us where the enemy is weak, and even tells us the best way to approach a silo. Doing this has made said commanders #30 and #15 in the world as commander... (these two commanders are Commander_Jack and =NfB= Falconman66)

If you can command well, and you keep me up to date with VoIP or at LEAST the in game chat, I will follow your orders. Getting my respect is something you have to EARN. Just because you hit the "Apply" button and then hit page up doesn't mean you are a good commander.

And don't you for one minute assume that I don't know what its like to command. I have gotten the commander ribbon once (70 Hours as Commander) and am well on my way to getting it again. I have spent about a week of my life staring at that commander screen, I would have to be some sort of moron to not understand how to command effectively by now.

Yes i know that, But commanders dont have to spot 1 Guy 10000000000times if i allready see him. That is what i mean:nod:

Also, actually looking up someone's stats in order to make a point, as well as bragging about your own is known as bad debating practice in real life. (You know, where the rest of us hang out) Does 'ad hominem' ring a bell?

Like I said before, but will say again for the sake of discussion: the commander can see things you can't. He can see 2 squads gathering somewhere around a corner that you can't, and can steer you clear of them by issuing orders in time. That is, of course, assuming that the other team aren't complete idiots like you're probably used to playing on pubs. Then they'll all be separate 3-man squads running around to the nearest flag just like you do.

Of course, VOIP would be even more effective, but I already stated that hardly anyone uses it.

But enough about me, please tell me more about you. And your stats...

People hate it because it completely drowns out the sounds of the game to the point where it is ALL you hear.

These commanders don't know what moderation is and feel they need to spot *every* enemy outside the uav/pds radius. All they have to do is spot the people that are a threat to the team when it comes to defending or attacking. So no, you dont have to spot every afk guy and grenade spammer in the main bases, or every single player out of a crowd of ten.

It's a shame Dice didn't give us a mute option for players, commander included. I can read my minimap, thanks.

I bring up stats because your stats speak of your experience. If you play unranked, then what do you know about pubbie commanders? Nothing. If you only play ranked, then based on your stats you don't know anything either. Stats are your qualifications, like a college degree. If your stats suck, I would judge that either you don't take the game seriously, or that you suck. Either one of those would disqualify your advice!

You want to bash MY stats? I have a 2.11 K/D Ratio, which is slightly above average. I have a 4.11 W/L Ratio, which is insanely good. I have 1.85 SPM, which is also above average. I have collected more than 3000 dogtags across my two soldiers. My first soldier was in the top 2000, no doubt if I had kept playing with him I would be in the top 1000 by now. I have gotten 3 Star General and kept it for three weeks straight. Across my two soldiers I have collected almost every single award TWICE, just missing the 8000 Kill medals. I have over 100 Commander Hours. I started playing November 29th, 2006.

While I am not the best player around, I am above average. I am a good team player when playing with people I know and trust. I hate random pubbies and people like you who haven't even hit Brig and think they know something about the game.

Anything else you want to know?

On topic, I stick to my original statement. I hate commanders, unless I know the person.

Yes please, tell me some more statistics, I just can't get enough of it!
I just makes me so ... hot... hmmmmmm

Please, fingulfin, do yourself a favor and just stop talking right now. To any reasonable person you just made a fool of yourself, both by completely missing the sarcasm in my request for more stats and in the fact that you actually think stats count for anything, let alone the validity of a person's rational thinking skills and arguments.

The players playing professional BF2 tournaments are playing unranked. Think about that for a while before you smack yourself in the head for proclaiming that pub ranks are everything.

Also, not all people need 1000+ hours in one game to be good at it.
I've seen newcomers to UT3 beat the everliving crap out of UT99, 2k3 and 2k4 veterans.

However, I'd really hate to burst your own personal bubble made of leet, so I'm going to leave it at this. Just regard anything you reply to me as unread. I don't like reading testosterone-dripping c*ckwaving posts.

@13th raptor: Of course there is a limit. There is no need to spot EVERYONE on a 64pl server, but I think you'll find that a lot of people will complain if the commander spots even 5 units in a row. I mean, hell ... that's what the scan is for!:S

Regardless of what anyone tells me, I still think that a commander can make or break a team. At least, when were talking about BOTH teams having sensible and efficient commanders, they are needed. When we're talking about the status quo on most pub servers: random people running around aimlessly, their relevance decreases.
And any good commander I've seen so far has used VOIP (which is why I don't understand why fingulfin is so intent on proving that I know sh!t, I'm making the same arguments he is, just not bashing player besides himself)
