Both are just OK. Day of Defeat allowed you to knife or rifle butt depending on your class. IIRC there was even one class that used a shovel as a club instead. Ah, good times.
BF or CoD knifing?

If you have someone 1-5 feet from you, it becomes quite hard to engage them in a standard firefight. As such, melee techniques become more useful. A buttstock to the face, or a knife through the neck. I wouldnt even want to imagine how hard it is to use a 1001mm long rifle in a close quarters combat situation.
Suppose IRL when you havent got lag or fps drops, hit detection, FPS, keyboard n mouse, enemies that are not able to respawn the rifle would be a more viable weapon
On topic, think the cod4 knife is great fun, though would like to see it as a seperate kit, that you could draw fast.
Even without it though have had a few 'gentleman like' unsaid agreements on servers, where I've knife dualed which is fun
Liked knifing in bf2 as well, but it was a bit more akin how you would use it, as a sneaky up close heres a wee pointy surprise weapon, when the ol' enemy aint looking

I miss knife fights like the ones you had sometimes in BF. Great fun and brings a new perspective to the game.
I have seen a knife server in CoD4 btw. It didn't say so in the browser but noone used their main weapon and I was kicked by some guy for killing someone with the Mini-Uzi. Kinda fun to see :pComment

I dont think it matters what takes more skill. I think gameplay matters, and i think cod4 does knifing better than bf2. IRL i dont think you would drop your sub-machine gun and pull out a knife, only to stab at someone three times to get a kill.
Plus, its more about reflex, and not guessing whether or not your next opponent is around the corner.Comment

i dont think in real life you could holster a huge .50cal sniper rifle on your back and whip out your knife in under a second, then the next be sniping again.I dont think it matters what takes more skill. Oh and did i forget to mention the fact that at least in BF knifing you had to be near them., not 10 feet away on the other side of the room.Comment

Maybe your right about the 50cal, which is why i said submachine gun.i dont think in real life you could holster a huge .50cal sniper rifle on your back and whip out your knife in under a second, then the next be sniping again.

I also recall the knives in bf2 to have a range of 6m, true or not ive never seen a cod4 kill from that far away. Ping can play tricks, you know.Comment

That would be cool. If you have your pistol out you whip, you have your rifle, you get a butt stock to the face.
Instead of killing, it stuns them to like a last stand position then you just put a few rounds into them.
Not a bad idea

CoD4 knifes imo have better hit detection, but way too much range.
for example, on crossfire playing Op For with the little sniper bed up the top, there are stairs to get up there, i was standing on the top of the stairs placing a claymore when an enemy runs in and knifes me from the bottom of the stairs.
The other thing i dont get is when a knife kill connects, it seems ti shoot you forward about 5 metres, this further increasing the knifing range.Comment

Whats this talk about huge range? I can only detect a hit if the opposition is about 2 feet (max) from me. As for wielding a large calibre sniper rifle.
With a proper sling, you can drop the weapon and grab a knife, swipe with it, in under 2 seconds, if youre trained. So knifing in COD4 while just a tad too fast (for obvious gameplay purposes), is if not realistic, at least plausible.Comment

There are some very inaccurate/exaggerated claims being made on the range of the knives.
To test it on your own, create your own server on the Crossfire map, go into the "market" building with all the watermelons in it (a burned-out bus is directly outside), and knife the melons from various distances.
The range of the knives is probably more than "in the real world", but it's not excessive - certainly not 10 feet. Any weird things people are experiencing with extreme range kills are most likely due to lag/ping.
I like how the knives operate now myself, but I wouldn't cry if the range were reduced by 25-50% either.Comment

I'd like to see grabbing them from behind and slitting their throats like Price did in the SP. But it'd be too scripted and gimmicky. Pistol whipping seems much more natural for an instant attack like CoD4 has. It's be sweet to have an instant pistol whip attack which did the same as a stun grenade plus some damage, and a knife you have to draw.Comment

i personally dont think this is a fair test because in my experience the NO hit knife animation and the HIT knife animation are different, when you connect the kill, the player seem to move forward about 2 metres, this doesnt happen when not connecting.Comment
