Wow 53 votes for still modern combat? hmm... Take a look at this video and maybe the odds might even up for Cowboys n Indians.
The movie shows stealth, scalping, squad play and clans will now be called Tribes and also a whole new battle of the Field! :P

Actually Future settings for a battlefield game can be done perfectly well. Heck I'm pretty sure tribes being much older then bf1942 had some influence on DICE. Tribe2 and Planet side, were amazingly tactical and felt realistic.

Taking a base in tribes 2 still remains one of the hardest things to pull off in a game. Different sheild generators for a different sheild within just one base. defending and assualting both took huge amount of co-ordination luckily there was the communication tools available at the time to pull it off. On of the first games to have a robust voice binds, slap some people into VOIP and you'll have no problem communicating with the whole team. The bases were huge, multi level and required jet pack use to really keep it mixed up.

Planet side still holds the cake for total chaos, and order at the same time. One of the first games with decent built in voip. and 100s of people on a battle field, communcating with 1000s or more people through chains of command, across various parts of the massive stage you were in and all the other zones across the digital world. A massive variety of vehicles and troop customization meant you had to be ready for anything, and you had to know how to move with your fellow soldiers even if you didn't fully understand what equipment they had, or what they could pull of with their vehicle.

I think 2142 COULD have worked, though they needed to make it even more leathal, they removed all this air power which makes no sense in the future, and just caters to people bitching about bombing who never use terrain for cover (and I'm no fly boy check the stats if you like sithdemon236). The stages could have been a little bit more vertical, and with the air power the combat would have been to. BF2 even felt more like all the space was being used, where 2142 is just on the ground, and on mostly flatter maps. I never checked out northern strike, but after betaing and actually buying the game 2142 felt lacking compared to BF2.

Quake wars and crysis both offer up some interesting ideas of a future setting and various ideas for BF2 style multi force combat, but it's some of the first of the games in this genre that captured that, maybe thats why it's hard to build on in that setting it's been done well in the past, and you don't want to just copy that.

Hell check out the Star wars mod First strike, especially the space stages with the variety of space crafts. even the ground stages were more interesting then some 2142 stages.

Mostly, I prefer the current day setting. But, I hate really modern, technological weapons, such as what I think was in CoD4. It's much cooler battling with an AK47 and a Deagle than a generic futuristic, laser-sighted, black metal rifle and likewise for pistols. The best situation would be Arab vs Arab :)

None of them. I think it should be something on WW3.

ww3 is just you and your squad in a missile silo launching nukes.

and COD4 isnt really all that futuristic. most US infantry carry the M4, and there are infared laseres, and the G36C is in sevice, and you can battle with a desert eagle and a ak-47 in COD4. great game. i dont see anything really futuristick.

They would never use nukes in WW3.

                    THIS is mostly true.

New games? screw graphics, screw timeline.

New GAMES should have, what have battlefield, tribes 2, or enemy territory...
those games, must make you all WORK together.

I don't know about you, but i've never seen tournaments with FarCry, or Doom3, no matter how revolutionists was its graphics. The weapons sucked, Game online didn't fulfilled its primary ideology, to make players work with each other, think, how to beat enemy, like real word. Full competition was, is and will be only in times of trying to beat up enemy. Without TEAM, its easy to win, only what matters there is skill (of course important, but not as working together - in my personal opinion) and game becomes boring, no one never hears about it anymore. We all like to compete with each other, but we like action also. That's the reason why there is such a rule No Commander in action, I also barely meet people willing to go inside AA (not mobile, those on carriers)

And that's why people gather in clans, teams, while playing battlefield, that is the thing that make this game kind of special for me. Action and real good teamwork, is used in BF2 almost perfectly.

My perfect game would look exactly like mix of action (water, air, or land) with team work, everyone has its function, no lone wolfs. The feeling that guy next your left and right will be there, when you need them, and a squad leader always with good plan and skills, to make your game more exciting than no graphics can be used instead.

Maybe its utopia, but i hope it will come true.

                    Cheers:salute:

                      modern day combat.
going back to the past? we had BF1942, BFV....
                      Future? Look at BF2142
Maybe take the story to the future like about 30 years. That could change the story but not the weapon/vehicle thing.

Future sucks! You have to use your imagination... but modern is a whole new thing. You are actually shooting what people are shooting out there right now, you are using what real soldiers use. Modern combat gives you a sense of feeling that you can actually relate to since you are usually too fat and lazy or scared to join the Armies.

One of my close friends goes to military academy. Hes smarter than you by miles and miles, which isnt really anything noteworthy.

Catching the drift? Remember, you react when people are using stereotypes on Russians, and now youre throwing out insulting stereotypes yourself.

Its not the first time Ive noted out how hypocritical you are.

well according to PC Gamer Uk, bf3 will be set in modern day just like bf2.
