Chopper soloing: a problem or an art?

On the servers I play I am known as a "whore". Not the kind on the street corner looking to give some bj's rj's or any kind other kind of j, but the kind that uses the attack chopper constantly. I take no offense to that. I pride myself in my flying and gunning abilities cause I feel I am proficient at both. However, there is that special case that almost all chopper whores like myself find. We get in the chopper to take off, and we find there is no gunner around. So we take off anyways. However I guess for some soloing is frowned upon, and I have always wondered why.

Here are my thoughts on this topic. I do not see a problem with this. Not to brag or anything I am a very proficient soloer. Hell, taking out jets with a tv missile is not that exciting for me anymore because it is almost a routine shot. I can handle most other attack choppers with ease. Tanks almost seam easier while soloing.

If anyone else here loves to use the chopper as I do knows that about 95% of the bf2 community is worthless in the gunner seat. A chopper with a crappy gunner is worthless, and wastes a valuable asset to the team.

So, why is soloing frowned upon?

(I never redline if a gunnner does get in)

I hate air whores. Get on the ground, and fight me like a man.

I dont have a problem with soloers but it shouldnt be possible. Thould be something like a 30 sec startup time for chopters like in PR.

Anyway, flying with a gunner is more efficient than soloing

It's frowned upon because people don't like being raped to the ground and they'll find any justification they can for their deaths. So, we have "gaymores"/claymores, j-10 whores, chopper whores, G36E noobs, etc, etc, etc.

Re: Chopper soloing: a problem or an art?

In your case soloing is fine, as you know a pilot and gunner is better (provided they both have some sort of skill).
Its the solo'ers who will do anything to get that chopper for their self that is frowned upon IMO.
If there is no gunner available then go for it! Nothing wrong with that, i do it all the time.
If there is a gunner wanting a ride, pick him up and even if he a noobie be patient, ask him to join your squad and teach him the ins and outs.

We were all crap gunners to begin with, although some think they were born elite and paid extra to have his name written on the chopper!
When pubbing everyone has equal rights to a chopper, skilled or not (some forget this)
If playing in a competitive match then its a different story.

Awaiting sloi's comments.......... if only i had a $ for every time he has said soloing i would be damn rich!

I love flying solo but it seems like most servers have a fit about it these days.

I guess it's only a problem if you're on the other end of that TV missle. :)

              I love these threads.

Your thread title is a false dilemma: soloing is not a problem, and it's more than an art. In the hands of a skilled player, that helicopter can mean the difference between a victory and a loss. I don't know about anyone else, but I prefer soloing because I'm fully confident in my ability to fly properly and gun/TV with precision.

Soloing is frowned upon because some people see it as an exploit, others see it as a perfectly legitimate technique that DiCE has left intact through several patches... to me, this indicates an 'off the books' acceptance, but we don't need to go there. Some are angry that we leave them stranded on the pad, with the thought that they have as much a right to be in there as we do. In a way, rightly so: however, I personally think their loss is our team's gain, and more often than not, I am correct.

It's not a terribly difficult issue to wrap your head around, but then I'm about as biased as you can be when it comes right down to it. (Check my sig, heh)

Yes! Because dolphin diving with a G36E, throwing med packs like there's no tomorrow, is how to fight like a man!

That is one of my pet peeves... you pick up these 'gunners' and:
                    - they dont have the common courtesy to join your squad and get on voip.
                    - they dont create squads and invite you so you can have better teamwork.
                    - they do stupid stuff like shoot a tv into the ground as your taking off 10m off the ground.
                    - they do stupid stuff like constant chain gunning at nothing alerting other choppers to your exact location.
                    - they never spot enemy helo's, tanks, etc..

no thanks, I'd rather solo unless they get on voice and have 1/2 a brain.

Re: Chopper soloing: a problem or an art?

I consider flying solo to be an exploit, just like bunny hopping. What pilot would leave his pilot seat climb over to the gunner seat and then back? It's one of the main disappointments in BF2. EA should have locked seating positions once an attack chopper is airborne, but it might have been too much trouble. Also, BF2 is meant to be about team play and flying solo is very much the opposite of this. Chopper who0res may have fun doing this, but this goes to the detriment of others.

Re: Chopper soloing: a problem or an art?

I regard it as an exploit. Not that I care; I usually don't even attempt to bother with the helicopter because of all the issues involved (getting redlined, tk'd, etc). The only reason I think it's an exploit is because of how ridiculous the idea of switching seats during mid-flight is.

EA/DICE could easily solve the problem by putting a delay on the TV. In other words, if you enter the gunner seat, you would have to wait 3-5 seconds before you could even access the TV screen. By that time, your copter would be spinning out of control, making a TV shot next to impossible.

Re: Chopper soloing: a problem or an art?

If by detriment of others, you mean the benefit of others, then I totally agree.

Would you fools rather be raped over and over and over by armor whores because the gunner in the chopper doesnt even know how to use the tv, let alone aim it effectively? If you are good enough to solo, chances are you will do better by yourself than with any given player. Most poor gunners simply hop in for the ride, having no clue what they are doing. Now that is a detriment.

I dont see why anyone could possibly have anything against a good soloer, so what if some noob doesnt get to go on a sightseeing tour? Whats important is for the attack chopper to be used effectively. And if one person is capable of that, then so be it.

And yes, a crew of two good players on VOIP will always be better than one good soloer, but this sort of teamwork is not always a possibility.

You must not have any idea how maddening it is to have a clueless gunner get into your chopper. No matter how many times you ask them to use the missile, they will get you killed over and over because they think its a good idea to chaingun tanks/choppers.

EDIT: To the people complaining how unrealistic soloing is: We know, BF2 isnt RL, and its a lot more fun because of that. Play PR if it really annoys you that much.

Actually to those morons who use real life as an excuse to whine. In real life, the pilot can take over the functions of the weapons officer. On his own seat! Isnt that wicked kool?!?!?!?

Soloing is a form of e-evolution. Where people that hinder others are left behind.
