Before I start messing with anything, is there any sure-fire way to fix the handshaking error? McAfee Security Center was recently updated on my computer, and I had to allow PB and BF2.exe to access the Internet and I get kicked for the handshaking error.
akuLa, for sure man :) always glad to help people get this game working for i know how frustrating it is to not get it to work.

I had a 'Service Communication Failure' issue with my PnkBstrB.exe file and after a few months of head scratching and frustration i finally found a solution:
Firstly i had to go to my McAfee Firewall settings and allow punkbustera full access,
Secondly I followed the manual un-install/re-install of punkbuster as shown above with the exception of one thing......After restarting Windows i ran http://www.evenbalance.com/downloads/pbsvc/pbsvc.exe first then http://www.evenbalance.com/index.php?page=pbsetup.php secondly and so far I have been able to play without any problems,
I hope this can help somebody:yay:
This sucks. I've been playing just fine up until today. I have already done everything in this thread. I did it BEFORE I had any problems in the hopes that I would lean forward in the foxhole and prevent the issues from occurring. It seems to have worked, I got by just fine until now. But today I'm getting kicked as soon as I join a server because the B service doesn't feel like shaking hands. As I've been the victim of the commander hack and name spoofing hacks and aimbots throughout the course of my time with BF2, I think the community might want to let PB that we don't really need or want them to "protect" us anymore. Hell, it seems like they've decided that the best way to stop cheaters is to make sure that noone can play at all. It's like retarded gun laws. Take away guns from all of the law abiding citizens and the only people who have guns are outlaws.
Restriction: Service communication failure: PnkBstrB.exe initialization failed
That's the error I'm getting in bf2. I'm sure you've all heard this before, I go into a game and it kicks me and gives me the error. I've read nearly a hundred of these posts and I've tried everything but nothing seems to work. I've allowed it into windows firewall and even disabled it, I've reinstalled punkbuster and ran updates.
PnkbsterA.exe is in my processes list, while b and k are not present. To get B in there, I have to run pbsvc.exe
I THOUGHT this fixed the problem, but then I went in game and PnkbsterB.exe seems to be shutting itself off, and yes it is set to enable automatically, so I really didn't get anywhere.
Some guy said to disable PnkbstrA.exe while in game, I did it and wasn't surprised that it didn't do anything but turn itself back on momentarily and give me the same error.
I'd appreciate it if somone knowledgeable gets back to me, and please read what I've already tried before posting.
OH and by the way I have spybot SD but I've shut it off.
Any updates on this issue "pnkbstrB.exe failed handshake"?
I've gone through this thread and tryed most of the suggestions, my next step is to reinstall BF2, which I really want to avoid as it takes ages to do. I don't see why that should change anything, as clearly the problem lies somewhere else.
I don't know what you have tried already, but this should fix it:
Make sure you have admin priviledges on: http://www.totalgamingnetwork.com/ma...d.php?t=32060&
Re-install punkbuster in this order:
1. Download PBSVC and run the UNINSTALL first.
2. Run the Install. This should reinstall Punkbuster A and B and run a communication test.
3. Next allow Punkbuster A B etc with your firewall/Antivirus (McAfee, Norton, Windows, ect.)
4. Download PBSETUP and update pb for BF2
I have admin priviledges, I have re-intalled punkbuster using the method from the first post including deleting registry entries, updated PB and turned off all firewalls/opened ports even though they're turned off.
This is really doing my head in now. To make things worse BF2 takes about ten minutes to load the map, so I have to wait, or find something else to do, before I even know if I've fixed the problem.
I played the other day fine for an hour. Hadn't changed anything or done anything special apart from starting the game like normal.
I have a feeling this is something to do with PB's servers, not our games.
I got into a game earlier and thought I'd cracked it. Did nothing else, just was testing new firewall settings. Got into a server and thought "great! Finally sorted it". I'd joined an empty server though just to test, so disconnected and joined a two thirds full Wake server, and you can guess what happened?! Yep, handshake error. FFS.
I have found a little trick, that works, but it's a pain in the ***. From the Project Reality forums.
Load up the server you want to play. If you're kicked for the handshake error, begin to load another server, wait until 10-20% loaded and cancel the load. Now go back to your original server you were kicked from, load up and play! Punkbuster doesn't kick you.
Don't ask me why this works, but it does! Still, a right pain and hassle to do.
it's ridiculous that a game that is several years old that many people are still getting PB errors and can't properly play. who's to blame? dice or pb? can't they work together to resolve such issues?
