Native resolution = the resolution the screen works best at, basically 1 pixel per whatever the DPI rating. Otherwise the screen has to scale it and you get slight blurring or other distortion.
It's also a cheap way of getting anti-aliasing, if you do it right (by setting a distorted resolution so the screen has to resample it).
