Also, hitboxes do lag behind, but the reason why some of you guys don't notice that is because the is bullet time for bullets in BF2, which is why you have to aim ahead for you nub snipers.
A good moment to plug the table I made based on [DUCKS]Black_Duck_1 testing/math ...

That's a great table, but how do you find the distance between you and your target? I've been judging with the flag's displayed distance on maps like Dalian Plant and Karkand, and I've gotten infinitely better at leading over the past few days but it'd be nice to be able to use the table for reference.

Sorry if it's really obvious but I've just started playing. Sniper has caught my attention most so far

Battlefield has perfect netcoding that makes the possibility of lagging hitboxes nonexistant? I also remember hearing from a couple tv misslers that you aim for the tail of a chopper, same principle maybe?

Allways good to welcome a new sniper :) , but also try all the other classes. They each have their own unique qualities which make them fun in a certain situation.

About your question. You allready started out by the method I used first myself. I even went so far as to write down specific distances from certain key points in the map. Distances I had measured with measuring tape across my screen. That was a lot of work and more to the point a waste of time as somebody pointed out. Why you will ask.

Well the answer is simple. We allready have a very good measuring tool build inside the game. Each SquadLeader has it, the Waypoint marker. Each SL can set a waymarker like Move To, Repair Here, Defend CP, etc. The best part of this is that by pressing the ALT key you will get an exact read out of the distance from you to that point.

If you engage a target you can set the Move To waypoint on that target and get an exact readout on Distance and make adjustments accordingly. After awhile you will get the hang of this and compensating will be second nature :)

Offcourse the netcoding isnt perfect, but as I allready pointed out for us snipers there will never be any moment in medium/long distance sniping that you have to aim behind somebody. It just doesnt work. I know that when you have a lateral moving target in CQB & up to 50 meters you can make hits by aiming behind. Its all in the lag, but you will have to adjust in each case per server. There is no fixed amount of hitbox drag.

            Re: Wannable Sniper Needs Help

Heh I know, I have the most played time in anti-tank, following medic but I find it relaxing to sit at ~150m in a nice dark spot picking off enemy grunts :P

That's great, next time I play I'll grab myself a squad and try that out, thanks for your help.

While I'm here, which is the best rifle for the longer shots? I'd rather be sat at a nice distance taking the aforementioned long shots rather than a 'designated marksman' type sniper for now. Anything past 200m and I can't hit a thing... well, except one very lucky shot in the head of a moving transport gunner... problem being it was a teammate, god he was pissed

As you might expect, I haven't unlocked the tier 1 rifle yet but is it worth continuing to the tier 2?

This entire thread can make an excellent sniper guide, im not joking it REALLY should be a sticky, I am so much of a better sniper form the things ive learned here.

btw if you are using a bush as cover, try to sniper through the holes in the leaves, its actually VERY easy, and you can snipebut if someone looks your way all they see is a bush, make sure you rifle isnt poking out other side though.

@Arca; you can find some additional stuff on sniping in the guide Bob_Is_Scary made in the Tips & Tricks forum or click this link --> Very Long Sniper Guide.

If you really like the Long Range Sniping (300 meters and above) you should definately go for the Tier 2 Unlock, the L96A1 Sniper Rifle. It has the thinnest crosshair of all which allows for maximum visibility of a target at long or extreme long range.

Keep in mind what I posted in another thread about the center of a crosshair ... Center of the Reticle

*** Always snipe by trees or some other object... NOT in grass

*** Grass does not render at a distance even through a scope... so don't think you'll hide in tall grass lol.

                      Re: Wannable Sniper Needs Help

use the bushes like I said and snipe through the holes, when the atatck heli (or any heli) come lookin for you, they will probably know you general area and will circle around as if they know exactly where you are, play chicken with it and stay prone and move so that the bush is wlays between you and the circling chopper.

And if you score a body shot, if its a sniper you hit just backdown to behind a hill or something that will cover you as you change your general direction in relaation to them, if you change you general direction whenever you think someone knows your general direction, after you have moved you will notice the people looking for you facing the completely wrong way, also having 2 snipers sniping from completely opposite directions confuses people.

The bushes are fun when you wanna ambush the lone wolfs in a game. When I see one incoming I pull out my knife and hide either in the exact center or on the opposite side (from the direction of the target) of the bush. It works almost every time I did this. The knife sticks out the least of all your weapons imo.

One of my funniest moments was when I went prone in a bush and an AT guy stormed right through that bush. He even bumped my slightly to the side. He never noticed that I was there until I put a few rounds in the back of his head with the silenced pistol :)
Offcourse I had to displace after that, so on the of chance he would come looking for me I left him a little candybox inside the same bush. I moved about 50 meters away from my previous position so I could cover that old position to. The guy came looking for me, as a medic this time, and went straight for that bush. Good times and +1 again for me :)

Its like this thread is already sticky, every time I come to this forum it is at the top. :p <3 Warlord for SVD action.

Bad thing about sniping though - It reveals how bad hit reg in BF2 can be because of how important it is that each bullet hits.

Btw in my previous post I forgot to mention that when you hide in a bush you should crouch, not go prone. Crouching in the exact center and not moving will be the ticket to success when you have somebody looking for you nearby.

The reason I was prone was because of an APC firing in my general direction. If you go prone you will stick out, when you crouch you wont. If you have the knife out that is.
