Re: is BF2 dieing out?
For a first post, I found this topic as most appropriate to add an opinion, as I guess a very average type of player. First of I joined BF2 probably later than majority of people here (Feb 2006).
Just introduce myself a bit, I do not play much FPS and I started the BF series with BF1942. However untill I had a good connection, I played mainly SP and afterwards MP (DC mostly) for a very shortwhile. I have to say that I quite liked the game. After a big pause I joined BF2 and jumped immediately to MP (no training on SP)
When I started out, I found the game challenging on the gameplay/mechanics side (felt quite differently from BF1942), but soon after getting the basic feel, I found out how much people who played mattered. I have to say that it took me some time to switch from lone wolf to squad member mentality (never really liked squad leader or especially commander role), but after a few shots at it, I saw what it means to gameplay both ways (good/bad squads). At that stage I found bad squads / statpadders, quite annoying. Of course, since I am just an average player, on many occasions it was also annoying fighting very good players.
When BF2142 came out, I wanted to give it a try. Not really beacuse of the hype, but more because I wanted to see what feeling this time I would get from a new BF game. After a few weeks of casual (and irregular) playing, I have to say that despite some very interesting aspects, I got quite bored and did not feel "at home".
After switching back to BF2, I have to say that I found the experience noticeably different. While there were always some stadpadders/morons, I foud the game much better and rewarding. It seems to me that people are thinking a bit more about coopration and trying to get everyone to have a good time.
To finish off this long post, I have to say that I do not care much if there is 10 or 100 low ping servers as long as I find quickly the one on which I have pleasure playing. So NO! BF2 is not dying out yet
