Re: My opinion on sniping in Bf2

Well due to the fact there is also DEVIATION in the game you get hits when you are not following all the things I posted. The occasions you make kills like that are far and between, but they might give the impression that drop has no influence. But this would only apply to the occasional sniper.

Another part of sniping over greater than 100 meter distances is the influence of your own position in relation to your target. Especially when you are either in an elevated position or lower position to your target. In both cases you will have to compensate ever so slighlty. When you are higher surpress the muzzle, when you are lower elevate the muzzle. Mind you when you are to low relative to your target you wont be able to make the shot, even when you can see them. This happens a lot when you are shooting at snipers on roofs and cranes for example.

Re: My opinion on sniping in Bf2

This game has made such a travesty of snipering.

      1. Fog of War - Lucky if you can see 150 meters at any time, any map, any location.....
      2. M95- Barrett should have sued EA for making its weapon appear so lame.
      3. Quake kiddie mentality - Get hit by a sniper round, no problem, someone will toss a med pack at you and itll magicaly heal ya to full. Mortally wounded, no problem, A medic will stroll by and dry hump you for .1 seconds and you both can skip off into the sunset together. Get hit by a sniper round that in real life would blow off limbs or pop your head like a pimple, no worries mate - your taken down to 10% health but can see hear run and interact like nothing happened at all.

      4. Sniper rifle range is no advantage in BF2. Shots out a 1/2 mile are commonplace, in this game everyone that can sight on you is a sniper.

Its a shame actually.......... Hopefully BF3 gets it right......

Agreed, if someone is going to stand still, they are quite easy pickings, even in BF2 imo, but the sniping in 1942 was so pin-point accurate that even someone side stepping and crouch/proning was still an easy target.

I am not saying I do really long range sniping, but I won't miss shooting from the Lake in jalalabad to the outpost, or the market w/ a headshot using no "holdover"

          How far is that?

Sniping is not "my thang" so I never bothered figuring out how far I could shoot, I only use the sniper kit when it is necessary to accomplish my mission (crossing open ground to get into the city while engaging snipers), & if I do that w/ out getting killed as soon as I can I will do a "field upgrade" to a more appropriate weapon for city fighting

          edit: Jemme101 ,dude, I looked @ you sniper stats, 15,000+ kills w/ a 15+ k/d niiiiiiice

          Ever heard of my clan m8 |SI|[SiN]DOOM? He is nice w/ the sniper rifle too w/ 27,000+ kills, & a 3+ k/d

          LG SB

          peace:)

hitting a moving target isnt that hard, this is going to sound stupid but it works. shoot JUST BEHIND your target. it works, really.

Yeah I know DOOM. Never played with him though but he has been up there for a long time as well. Just like both guys I mentioned.

The maxview on Jalalabad is 270 meters and the Fog starts at 260 meters according to the game files. If you didnt have to compensate much I would have to assume you were firing from an elevated position.
In any case up to 150 meters in a level field of firing you would not have to compensate at all in my experience. After that you would have to aim just above the targets head.

I am making a small table just like I made for the Bulletdrop, which holds all the Max.View Distances and Fog Start Distances. Ill post it here later on as a new post.

Txs for the comments and check this link as well for my latest Rifle Stats. My aim is 50:1 , 70% accuracy and 5:1 Kit

i think its from viewing the hit dectection thread.

some guy shows firing ahead doesnt register, but firing behind does.

the vid shows this at distance and upclose(with a variety of weapons)

the shotgun up close is hitting but not taking any damage, then the guy fire's it once behind the target/or opposite direction the enemy is moving,

and its a one shot kill.

i could be wrong thinking thats got anything to do with but im 99% sure :)

Re: My opinion on sniping in Bf2

I really don't understand all the whining and crying about how hard it is to be a sniper. I play sniper all the time because I like to watch football as I play and don't like running around all hibbity-jibbity round after round. My sniping percentage hovers around 49%-50%...not that it matters. I get kills all the time. You can't instaprone and hope to snipe someone. You might get lucky, but that is not what the sniper kit is designed for. You have to learn to lead, to aim high to account for bullet drop, to wait until a target has the head either pointing directly toward or away from oyu. You learn to do these things instead of whining about how hard it is the sniping becomes incredibly easy. For you new snipers here is one final tip.....DO NOT get on the top of a building and then hang out over the edge trying to snipe someone. YOU WILL DIE. Especially if I am playing. Better yet, do not even get on the top of a building because that is where everyone looks for snipers. There have been many, many times when I have found a bush on the ground to hide in where no one ever thinks to look (Mashtuur is excellent for this) and just wear out the other side. If you must be on a roof, booby trap the top...not the bottom of the ladder. Do this away from the edge. A visible claymore = sniper = hand grenades coming soon to find said sniper. Don't bother shooting vehicles, it just gives away your position. If someone is killed by your claymore, that person usually isn't happy because they feel they have been "cheated" by your claymore and they will come back to find you. If they find you first, you will more than likely die because it is very difficult for a sniper to be in close quarters combat with someone with anything other than a sidearm to fight with. Finally...it is just a game. Learn to take it less serious and you will have way more fun.

Actually this is not true. I just finished a first version of the Max View Distance / Fog Distance - table ...

                        ...

<andy>in the server.zip of the maps, open up the init.con file in notepad.

                        where it says

                        GameLogic.MaximumLevelViewDistance 610

that is your max possible view distance for the map.

you then have to take into consideration the fog's max view distance.

open up the sky.con file, again in notepad,

                        Renderer.fogStartEndAndBase 0.00/610.00/0.00/0.50

the second number is the max viewdistance from fog. which is your 'true' longest range.

these were taken from dalian plant btw.

                        :)

I fear good snipers. A single good sniper on one team can win the battle for his team if he's good. I've seen it many times.

                                1. You forgot to mention that you dont even have to hit someone to wound them with it. You cant "miss by inches" because the sheer velocity of the round will rip flesh off as it passes you.

                                2. With an M82 and a max effective range of 1500m (over a mile) whats with this scope that I can barely see 300 yards with? None of these rifles were represented well..
