Stats, Its the greed and hype of getting a new medal or rank, thats why most people play BF2, for the choice few who play for the moment, they do play mods, but its 70% to 30% in favour of the stat whores.

I doubt that most people play for medals or ranks since they have no (or very little) effect on your gameplay unlike in rpg-games where you gain levels, new skills etc. You can live without most of the locked weapons anyway.

Sure many people on forums keep asking how to get this or that medal or ribbon but I'm sure they would also take a "whole new game" over some picture on your stats sheets but maybe the "new games" (=mods) aren't that good on the gameplay department as the vanilla BF2.

Generally, I like the infantry combat more on mods than in vanilla but most of the maps have too much vehicles in them or too long distances between the "flags" (or even too many flags in some cases) to make the battle actually tactical or interesting like in vanillas Sharqi or Karkand. Most of the mod-maps doesn't have anykind of "choke points" in their maps when it comes to infantry combat and the thing I like in Karkand is that it's pretty confined space that 'forces' the game be more intense especially around some key locations (South flag -> Hotel flag -> Market flag). In mods, maps are just one as-big-as-possible area with flags puked all around the map so the game will just be flaghopping from one flag to another and there's no or very little use for defence. Throw in jets, copters and 3 tanks each side and just forget infantry unless you're an antitank.

Re: Mods - Why are folks not playing them?

I've tried a bunch of the mods, and so far PoE 2 is the cream of the crop, IMO.

It's really a shame that the hundreds of hours the mod developers put into these projects go unappreciated by the majority of the community.

And why? No stats? Seems pointless to disregard so much great work simply because there aren't persistent stats.

"Oh no, if I can't get my Supra Helo Whore Badge I'm not playing..."

So what? Everyone is waiting for Quake Wars and there aren't going to be persistent stats in it, are people going to ignore what looks to be an amazing game simply because there isn't the instant ego gratification of persistent stats?

I for one appreciate the work the mod teams do for our enjoyment and thank them for it.

I didn't like POE2 either. Although the amount of work done on it and the finaly quality is impressive, and I can recognise and respect the talent that made the mod, that doesn't change the fact that the gameplay is the same (if not only slightly different to BF2 original). In my opinion is it even spammier.

What do I learn from this? Bf2 gameplay is not great, hence my love of realism and tactics keeps me much more interested in PRMM.

Stats are just an easy excuse

People play games other than BF2, even if they don't have stats.. they do that if those games are fun. In my opinion, BF2 is fun, mods just aren't.. and looking at difference of playernumbers between bf2 and its mods, I'm not the only one with that opinion.

No, I answered the question. It's common sense. If mods were ranked, alot more people would play them. I personaly do play mods. Maybe you should go back to your dream world of assumptions.

I agree, but the people that enjoy the game are far outweighed by the stat-whores, it's kind of sad actually.

                                Sorry for long post

First of all, its obvious that the best mod out there is PoE2 .
It brings the best innovations, best modeling, a very good balance
between arcade and reality, and a very original way to balance
each sides. PoE2 would have the potential of becoming
what Desert Combat was for 1942, or even what CS was for
Half Life by the quality and finesse that it brings, compared
                                on the vanilla game.

Problem is: EA/DICE added a new way of doing things as they
Now, not only don’t help the modders community but consider them
much more as direct Adversaries in there goals of selling
add-ons to exploit he BF2 engine at maximum.

So here we are; If we can say that EA/DICE gave the worse
After-sale service in the history of gaming, they can have
the benefit of having adapted incentives that made popular online
Games like Everquest or Planetside to serve there goals.
And I’m quite curious to see what ET/QW will do about that.

You have to see, what people like in the stats/rank/unlock system,
cause even if you say that you don’t like it, its obvious that most
do and that this is one of the big reason why a big part
of the fans wont get to the next step of download /trying a MOD.
And … to be honest, who wasn’t happy to look at a new medal
or to reach the goal of a promotion… I mean, its all about the
military tradition. EVEN if the biggest satisfaction comes from a
good match where good coordinate team play was involve .

For me, the stat system that the PoE team put up is a good start, but I don’t
believe that they should go much further in that direction before
Having accomplished what as to be done for the mod to reach
The perfection (and reputation) that it deserves as a project.

Last thing; sadly, I think that PoE also suffered about the non-presence
Of an American army, Yeah, I know, as stupid as it sounds, most
Players (Americans populate near 60% of servers) still like to associate
there game with there flag, or soldiers… EX: Armoured Fury (that came
out after the sadly famous 1.3 patch) was probably the addon that sold the most
just because of the action, taking place in USA. Sadly, there’s a lesson
                                to take from that.

For me, the conclusion is: PoE team, be patient, get advertising and continue
The amazing work, maybe choosing ET/QW as a next engine. I bet that You’ll
                                get support from those guys.

One day EA will get what they disserve.
