An examination of the Sniper kit: Why is it so attractive to new players?

I admit, the moment I logged in, I was enthralled by the Sniper kit. I'm not quite sure what I liked, but I knew I liked it.

I had always quietly pushed my favourite kit aside, though, as it seemed that (more than) a few others were as enamoured with it as I.

I've been toying around with the kit for the past while, and I really enjoy it. I know the ins and outs, and like to think of myself as fairly proficient with the kit.

As can be expected, I run in to a lot of other long-ranged loners on the battlefield.

What I notice, is a large number of them are low ranking, and usually end the round with a 1:2 or 1:1 KD/R. I am quite aware that stats are not indicative of skill, as I only have 22 000 global points myself (coupled with a lower than 1:1 KD/R), but I find that the Sniper kit gets a bad rap.

Many people complain about the kits useleessness. The problem with being a Sniper is never getting the recognition for saving a comrades life, as they rarely know you did it. While Medic and Support soldiers are hailed for their usefulness on the field, for dropping little magic bags of ammo and health, Snipers are labelled as good for nothing loners.

What makes the Sniper class so attractive to the new player? I've come across many Snipers, who while inferior in rank, picked me off numerous times. But the kind of Sniper which seems most common, is the Claymore spamming, two-shot, stays on the same roof until he/she dies (only to return to the exact same spot instantly), thinks he/she owns the roof, Sniper.

What makes the kit such a magnet for new people?

Don't take this as something against new players, because that is not what this is. I am just a little ticked that it's embarassing playing the Sniper kit because of people with names like 'SniperWolf123' or '$niperM95!!', whom think they own the roof, and give other Snipers a bad reputation.

    Thoughts/opinions?

You bring up a point with the topic. Why are there so many snipers in an intense city map game? They do deserve the rap when you are in an alley way, and you (and a assault squad) passes by a sniper in the area. People forget that snipers should be providing directional fire. As it is, you see a lot of them getting in the thick of it, dropping claymores. The better snipers get behind the lines, and really screw with the enemy from a direction they would not be expecting.

And again, I guess sniper appeals to a group of people whom, when they started the game, they picked it, got owned and never had a chance to learn tactics. But really, most people that play BF2 came from something like Halo or CS, so they should be comfortable with head-to-head clashes.

for me..i played sniper alot at the begining because just by using the scope..u get a boost of 8fps and like since ur out of the action, u get more performance...also...in other games...every tries to get teh sniper rifle cuz its like powerful (awp whores)

also...u dont die alot as sniper since ur mostly hidden and away from everything and i also guess movies like Saving Private ryan and enemy at the gates made ppl want to be sniper more (well thats wat got me into sniping)

I played sniper to get better at my aim. This helped me alot in playing the other kits as it gave me a better understanding of the game system and the hit boxes and such. I like playing sniper only when need. As you said they should provide cover and play mind games with the other team. I would gladly sacrifice my self as a sniper to get my team closer to a goal. again it is those mature players that use the sniper kit correctly that can really enjoy this game. Since I play the game for fun (and to win) I love being a sniper when the team needs it.

Because they have the best weapon (M95 for sniping people out of cockpit), Claymore just toss em and ya get kills (or teamkills ) Its a good excuse so you wont stand in the front lines, AND

Snipers have hay and sh*t glued to their faces! Makes them look like Bigfoot or something.

I rarely play sniper in BF2, but I do remember playing sniper a bunch when I first picked up BF42. It allowed me to sit back from the action a bit and get a feel for the game without being absolutely crushed by the good players every few seconds. I very quickly moved on and jumped into cqc with both feet and haven't looked back. I hope that many of these players are following a similar path.

Of the various roles, sniper tends to be my choice for several reasons. I know it has a bad rep and sometimes snipers have been accused of camping (I know I have despite moving after every 2-3 shots) but I still can't see why. It appeals to me because I've almost always been the sniper of my group of players, guess it's just the rush of that perfect shot that leaves me with a big grin. And I'm mostly sniping when I play airsoft so I guess the want for something with long range and a scope comes naturally.

Sometimes I sit back, sometimes I sneak deep into their lines and take a few shots here and there, whichever I fancy. If for some reason I'm a little off-form I'll just go for Special Ops or Support.

Like some of the comments from above, I used the sniper kit because I wasn't so good and tended to stay out of CQC situations when I first started playing BF2. But now I like the challenge of it especially in Warlord to cap flags by being smart not by brute force.

i play as sniper because i like to see how many people i can kill before getting killed myself. also because, at first i was a horrible shot with a bolt action and i like to see how much i can improve. imo, snipers get a bad rep, for claymore spamming and not contributing to the team.

Claymore spammers bug me...come to think of it...I've yet to even use a claymore myself.

There's nothing like watching a guy trying to cap a flag, or maybe sneaking to kill a buddy of yours, and just wait till the last moment and pop them on the head BANG, and gone they are. And guess what they never even saw it coming, that my friend is what i like about sniping. I am the hunter and you are my prey.

MOst snipers are jsut jackasses who just go up in the frontlines to try to put some claymores.
