      Re: Value of Rank

I look at people's stats, and not their rank.

Anybody who has his stars, but still manages to fall below a 1 K/D ratio as a ground pounder, gets no respect from me.

        Re: Value of Rank

If rank means nothing then jump in a hind with a private and see how long you last.....

That being said, even higher rank people suck in helos/armor/jets etc and it isn't a fair judgement but I know, or, at least hope that when I get into a jet/helo or whatever that the higher the rank, the better of an understanding of the game that person has. This isn't always the case though.

I love getting promotions, badges and medals, I love that drum roll sound ...but it does give me something to work towards.

Rank means jack. K/D Ratio with each weapon / vehicle, how many gold / silver / bronze medals per round and SPM is the best indicators of determining a players skill level.

as far as skill goes, rank doesnt mean sh*t. i will admit however, having silver or brass on ur shoulder does give one a sense of accomplishment. unfortunately i wouldnt know.

                Re: Value of Rank

Let me ask a few things first.

Rank is not dependent on hours spent correct? It's dependent on GLobal points right? If that's the case........

Saying that a high ranking person has a lot of "expereince" can't truely be too accurate. When I think experience I think time spent.

One can only use their own stats to compare to anyones because those are the only stats that your in full understaing as to how they were accumulated. EA/DICE were counting on that and it is just human nature, but how it pertains to this thread is also important.

Rank, is an idicator like any other. Yes there's a certain ammount of points you need to get a rank, but the first thing I would look at (which you can't ingame) is the points/minute and total time spent. Along with many many other factors.

As it relates to me, I know I've got 7 seconds in a jet and only a few minutes in a chopper (begrudingly did some gunning the other night), so reletively large ammounts of kills per game didn't get me too many GPs towards my rank.

I don't think I whore vehicles, to my definition anyway. I rarely just wait for them to spawn, even in a large server were it's not a bad move strategically with all the vehicles going down left and right.

I've only gone for one badge the pistol. The rest of my game play has been geared towards a win as a guidline. Or at least attempting to understand what pertains to a win (which is still becomes debatable).

Not that my way is right or superior or less morally ambiguous. How you get your points (other then blatant padding) is up to you as a player. How ever you enjoy the game within it's accepted rules how you should play.

Now here are the stats: 43601826

Now unless your me, or really examine the stats very closely you could look at them and make many different assumptions. It's impossible to assume anything about someone's rank and how it pertains to their skill or experience.

That's one story in how ever many copies of BF2 have been sold. It's not to say I better represent my rank then others. If I had cut my lone wolf in half when I first started I feel I'd be better player then I am now. Personally I felt I needed to be able to handle myself before joining a squad. Some ego and pride got in the way there .

They are interesting to look at. But the reletive ease it takes some one to gain rank with selective map, vehicle, and weapon choices, along with the occasional blatant padder, there's just no really knowing.

Is rank a reletive indicator as to how much time you've got into the game? Yes because there is only a certain high and low end of points that can be accumlated in a certain ammount of time. The descrepency between the high and the low is were the details lay.

I'd be wary of some one with few hours but high kills/game. Then again I don't trust stats that much anyway and my assumptions could be just as wrong.

Personally I'd like to know what the average time for rank is across the board, for the entire BF2 population.

I play for a win as my guidline, yet my Win/Loss is under .500. I play mostly on clan servers and mostly against those who are on it. I don't even mind a little stacking just to see how well I can do along with team I'm on presently. I rarely play on clan servers when their are not a lot of them on it. I look at servers like bars. I want people to know me, I want to be treated better then some other goof that just drifted in from the WWW. Then again I could suck, that's why my Win/Loss is low.

The only true way to how a person plays is to play with them and/or talk to them.

Greg on bf2player.com did a query and it came out to 1st sergeant/master gunnery sgt having the most players with that rank. Next up was, I think, gunnery sgt and then 1st lt. I'm going off memory alone so don't quote me on that.

                    Re: Value of Rank

Rank is only an indicator of time played and points accumulated. It's not an indicator of how overall skilled, well versed in several kits, how that player accumulated those points or how pleasant to get along with a player is.

Take this player as an example. I've used him as an example, because I know he's a serial tker and he M95ed me out of a jet tonight, so I took a look at his stats. He's ranked at colonel in a relatively short time, and with a massive victim list. However from a total of 803 hours played, 617 hours (approx 77% of his total time) have been in a helicopter. The vast majority of time spent has been on attack helo maps.
He's obviously points obsessed, and looking at all his other vehicle and infantry kit stats, is really bad at everything else.

The other night I played against a Sgt with 90 hours in, but he was a superb pilot and all his other k-d ratios are great. Probably someone who has started a new account, unless he's just naturally brilliant..

I'd rather play with enthusiastic sgts and cpls who try to play as a team, and hopefully use VOIP well, than a general who's only interested in their points, and will do anything to get them, whether that be tking people out of helos or jets, or dolphin diving around Karkand, grenade spamming the Hotel...

                          Seriously,

One of the reasons why the Rank system was brought out is so people who sit infront of the pc all day can actually justify their time wasted ...

"I just spent 1000hrs on BF2 - its all worth it coz of got a shinny icon next to my ID"

Its just a plot to keep people locked away indoors rather than moving up the social ranking system!

Put down your mouse, pick up your Girlfriend/wife/kid and take him/her to the Dinner/shop/park!

The last time was Saturday night playing Special Forces. Funny factoid, 3 of the 7 members are 1st L or up and 2 are Gens, Im a 1stSearg but Im pretty good and I have quite a bit of experience in competitive areas. The clan had also tried to recruit me back in Dec/Jan but I was in a clan already and running a large Infantry Only Tournament at the time. I think they got 2nd in that tourny as a matter of fact. Thier leader was a lead admin on my ladder as well.

Funny how those points and ranks dont mean shi* when you turn em off.
