There are jets to shoot the helos down etc. But in competition matches on the smaller 16 player maps, where both sides have only 1 attack chopper (or even only 1 chopper for the whole map like Dalian Plant 16), they totally dominate the match, because it's very very easy to stay out of the range of the few AA sites (while still being able to destroy them).

Well I am still interested in an answer to the following question:
Why would it be so bad if the AA had the same range (or even more) than the TV missile? Does the helicopter really need that cheap "I can kill you but you can't kill me" advantage? Is that really balanced? I don't think so....
I myself don't understand why the AA lock distance isn't the same as the helo TV distance. I have often wondered why I couldn't lock a helo hovering in plain sight above a main dropping troops, you have a better chance of hitting it with an AT rocket. IMO though I don't think the helo itself needs nerfed, just the defenses against it. As it is two AA rounds doesn't destroy a fully healthed helo, sends it away licking it's wounds yes, but I think if you can score two hits, it should bring it down.

Perhaps because AA emplacements doesn't have a skill requirement to hit?

Please argue as to why an autoaim weapon should be on par with a non-autoaim weapon.

Because they are the best defense against the two most powerful systems in the game, it's called balance.

i think the aa is fine and the distance is fine. its so ****ing annoying on dalian hearing a beep and moving out of the way thinking its a jet but its not, its the aa like right next to you but by the time you pinpoint which one it is its too late and u die cause u saw him too late to kill him and he kills you and stuff cause you saw him too late so now your like dead and stuff. say that sentence in one breath, im so ****ing awesome.

Being able to hover just out of range of the Essex guns, and obliterate everything on top of the ship, this would be inbalanced.

well the hellfire tv missles that are mounted on Cobras and Apaches have a range of 5 miles, but with that kind of range, you could snipe with the missle. but that would be cool :)

Lets face it the chopper pilots don't want real life fighting characteristics. That would mean they're hiding out in the hills popping up over a ridge from 4km to launch a hellfire at an APC then ducking away again.

Noooo, they want rape, up close and personal. And with that comes the requirement that the AA be reduced to 4.4% of it's real life range. Thats right people 4.4%!

Balance "A common ground between realism and playability that attempts to increase the variety and viability of game strategies by adjusting real life physics".

IMHO aircraft should have been left out altogether. The maps are too small and the view distance is too short to ever make aircraft balanced and fair. Take the Tunguska for example, on any map it should be able to lock at 18kms, that's any aircraft, anywhere, on any map.

I think it would be nice if it they increased the distance slightly. The way I see it, if you can visually see them you should be able to hit them. nothing like firing a rocket at the end of the island on Wake and it blows up right before it reaches the guy.

I already did, your experiance does not define anything.

In Iraq I watched one night as Apaches were attacking ground troops, not hiding 4k's away popping off TV missles. We had air support any time we did a large movement convoy, and saw more than a couple times Apaches lighting up treelines that were dropping mortars, or RPGs on our base, or patrols.

If I had it my way, TV missiles would shoot at least 600 meters. Since that won't happen, at least give us WYSIWYG! (What you see is what you get.)

If I can see the target, I want my hellfire to reach it. A reasonable request...

Lol, in a modern battle those being illegally invaded have usually not had the merry fsck blown out of their AA defences over a 10 year period under the auspices of a 'no fly' zone.

I've also seen an Apache using cannon on soft targets at 2km plus range. That doesn't mean it's either necessary or the best way to go. And in fact the conclusion of experiences with the Apache class in the Gulf Wars has been that they are more vulnerable in Urban settings than even the UH-60 which is preferred due to it's ability to target multiple soft targets.

In 11 days SA-7's took out 3 Apaches in GW2. It's not their abilities that enable attack choppers to get close, it's the complete lack of serious resistance that does.

The truth is GW2 confirmed that "hiding 4k's away popping off TV missles" is what they're designed for, and what they should stick to.

Don't 'cherry pick' your evidence, not only is it extremely lame, but I'm just not that gullible.

I use to be able to arch missiles up and over buildings and nail tanks on the other side. It was realllly maneuverable.

In BF2 I don't want realism. My sole reason for not wanting the AA to have 1:1 range with the hellfire is that the AA's don't miss, ever.

No, I don't want to get taken out by a retard pressing his mouse button twice whilst hearing a clear tone.

Care to talk about the power of the in game wire-guided, FFAR's and autocannon compared to their real life counterparts?

That's the definition of balance in tearms of realism vs "gameplay". With that definition a simulator game with two identical teams would be considered unbalanced. Not a good definition.

IMO this game should be realistic kind of like Operation Flashpoint. Too bad it isn't

In that case your call for "balance" has no merit as far as I can tell. If you would care to come up with a less retarded definition I'd be happy to continue the debate.

EDIT: Your definition would imply that a game where one team is totally raped by tanks isn't imbalanced because the AA's range is 1:1 with the helicopters wire-guided missiles.
