Re: Joystick Hat Switch / POV Hat mouselook JoyToKey Tutorial

I'd post mine, but it relies so heavily on JoyToKey that it really wouldn't be useful.

Lemme see if I can get an image of my joystick and then edit in the commands.

      Thanks

so the benefit from using this JoyToKey is to do the keyboard combined actions with a single Joystick key , right ?

sorry for off-topic but Talus i suggest that u O/C ur cpu to 2.4Ghz since ur cpu @ 2.2GHz is a bottleneck to ur awesome vga card, u need atleast 2.4Ghz to unleash its full power, and i am sure ur cpu can achive 2.4ghz @ stock voltage and using stock heatsink without any problems

I suppose I could try it...but once those 939 prices come down, I'm gonna upgrade to something beefy.

But yes, JoyToKey basically gives you the freedom to map anything to your joystick including mouse movement/clicks, and multiple key combos.

It's a great app for using a joystick/gamepad that doesn't ship with native support (or CRAPPY support in the case of BF2).

I ain't really good at flying with my keyboard, so I wanna try flying with a joystick. What joystick from around $50 is the best to start with?

If you have a Logitech Force 3d pro (maybe even the others) you only need to use this program to map the hat switch. If you plan on using it for turret movement (like I do) set the sensitivity way down. About 20% should be alright

Re: Joystick Hat Switch / POV Hat mouselook JoyToKey Tutorial

I'm using Joy2Mouse (I'm not sure what the difference is between that and Joy2Key) and I've noticed the response time is a little faster/better with the keyboard than with the stick. Using the dots on the carrier for a point-to-point measurement, if I side-step (strafe) left to right from one point to the next, I get there faster using the A or D keys (keyboard) than I do with the stick.

Now, my stick is an unusual one, in that it's designed for FPS games (has a built-in trackball to replace the mouse features), so you might not be using your's when you're on foot as I would. However, movement is movement, so that slower stick response time would also be true when in the air or in a land vehicle. I monkeyed with the JoytoMouse axis sensitivity, but with no effect.

So, I'm wondering, have you noticed the same degraded stick response time using JoytoKey (guess you'd have to measure, as I did -- kind of an unhappy surprise...)? There are other emulators out there, as well, principally RBJoy, that I haven't tried. Perhaps it's the application?

I may be the application...I tried joy2mouse but I did not like it.

It could be your device too though...

Try JoyToKey and see for yourself if there is a difference.

Also, do you force BF2.exe into high priority mode or anything? If so, that severely affects input devices.

Hmm. When I set BF2 up, I did try some of the tweak advice out there, but can't remember specifically what forcing BF2 into high priority entails. Could you remind me? I think the only thing I really did was force the widescreen resolution in the target command line (when launching the game).

To change priority mode, bring up task manager (control alt delete) and right click BF2.exe under the 'Processes' tab.

There, you can change the process priority. It should be left at 'normal' unless you know 'high' doesn't cause you any problems.

Sounds like something worth doing (I have a pretty current machine, etc.), but you mentioned this would severely affect input devices?

Yes, if you have input devices (e.g. keyboards, gamepads, joysticks, speedpads) that depend on other running processes, then those processes will suffer (leading to sluggish response in-game) unless you also set THEM to high priority mode as well.

Me? I leave BF2's priority alone.

As a follow-up for future "searches" of this problem, I got the "fix" from the writer of the Joy2Mouse program. The stick itself had worked by default, before I ever installed the emulator. What he suggested, though, was to actually MAP the directional keys (w, s, a, d) to the X and Y axis', and then lower the default threshold in the emulator for those axis'. It worked like a charm -- I now move as fast using the joystick as when I use the keyboard, movement-wise.

I tried setting my joystick up this way a while back, and I remember being dissapointed when I discovered that you can't control the jet and use free look simultaneously. Is this still the case?

Free look is slightly useful for the chopper, but in a jet, if you can't control your direction while you're looking around, it's utterly useless IMO. By the time you see where the other jet is headed, it's already too late to adjust your heading to stay behind him.
